I’m going to rattle off every single clothing brand I can remember from the 90’s/early 2000s off the top of my head and I want you to add any I missed

Globe, dc, rusty, billabong, mambo, no fear, unit, metal mulisha, quicksilver, volcom… shit I think that’s about it atleast what’s at the top of my head 😂 I know there was a brand of skate shoes for chicks but the name eludes me right now

Pies from the Past!

'93 baby here. Those Bakewell mini pies were the ducks nuts.

I regret never trying the pizza pie in middle school. There was always that 1 kid who always had a pizza pie & there drink would either be a honeycomb supa shake OR a Brownes spearmint.

Mrs macs just dont taste that good anymore. They changed the recipe like 5-6 years ago Is swear

These bouncy balls

Just saw this pic posted on r/nostalgia and aside from the smell and texture, I remembered how these used to be everywhere. Shops always had a big container of them, kids everywhere bouncing them down roads and in the yard at recess.

What was Australia's last VHS film? 📼

Ah... The memories! 😢

Upon searching, I couldn't find any 2005 or 2006 onwards Hollywood mainstream movie release on VHS in Australia (but I think in the USA there were still some during those years).

So pretty sure it must've been the end of 2004 (which would've flowed into 2005).

I'm sure somebody will know what the last films were, if not THE very last one. Not including continued prints of earlier releases.

Apparently 2003 was the year DVDs outdid VHS. Despite DVD starting in the late 90s, I definitely feel VHS was still dominant up until around 2001-2002 and then DVDs just exploded, but I'm sure plenty still rented or bought VHS until mid-2000s or a mixture, especially if money was tight (early DVDs were not cheap especially latest releases!) I still used VHS player to record blank tapes of TV until 2010 when I got a DVR.

I reckon it could've been "Finding Neverland" (2004) starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, exhibited at cinemas in Australia on New Year's Day (Jan 1) in 2005 and came out on VHS (there is physical evidence online via eBay) & DVD a few months later from Buena Vista Home Entertainment (who owned Miramax). Tech specs said: Colour - Hi Fi Stereo - Digitally Mastered - This film has been modified from its original theatrical version, it has been formatted to fit your TV.

Crimestoppers ad break, just before the Monday night movie on Channel 9

Used to always freak me out when the sirens started and that giant finger pinned the guy to the ground! Not to mention the freaky, yet sometimes hilarious sketches of the bad pinecones they were looking for,

Mystery Flights

Remember mystery flights!?

It was a big thing in the 90's and you'd just hope that you wore the correct clothing for where ever you were going! hahahaha

I won a mystery flight with the company I worked for and it was for two people, so I took my bestie from work. I was in my early 20's and living in country Victoria at the time.

What a journey. Drove her and I to Melbourne, which I had never been there before, navigated the airport car parking, finally found the park and then navigated the airport itself. An adventure. No google maps. No phones. Nothing! hahaha. That's how we rolled back then.

Found out we were going to Adelaide, which wasn't exciting to say the least, considering that's where I originally came from. Was able to change it to Brisbane . Brisbane was meh. Only had one day there and most of it was travelling there, then travelling to and from the airport then travelling back later in the afternoon. So we just walked around the city not really knowing what to do (remember no phones to help us!).

A core memory that will stay with me.

Has anyone here been on one back then? What was your experience?

Hi everyone,

I’m the producer (and proud dad) of my 9-year-old son’s podcast, Join the Fray. We recently sat down with Dr. Ted Gervan, and I thought this community might appreciate his unique perspective on how the industry has shifted over the last two decades.

Before he became an educational leader at institutions like Sheridan, Capilano, and the Centre for Digital Media in BC, Ted worked as a prosthetic makeup artist in Hollywood. He was part of the talented team that brought the original X-Men (2000) to life. [Ted got the chance to support the super talented team of Evan Penny or Ann McLaren who designed the look for Mystique and Sabretooth!]

He contributed to the character designs (including the drawings for Sabretooth) and helped building specific costumes, pouring and coloring the silicone, painting nails, and applying the makeup once the initial sculpts were molded.

Fraser and Ted had a great discussion about:

  • The Reality of the Makeup Lab: The technical process of pouring, coloring, and detailing silicone prosthetics for a major film production, and how that hands-on experience shapes his view of modern 3D pipelines.
  • The Evolution of the Craft: How he sees the industry shifting between physical, high-touch lab work to digital-first workflows, and how education needs to adapt to teach both.
  • Advice for Future Artists: His take on "the fear of building"—how he teaches students to bridge the gap between a design idea and the messy, physical/digital reality of actually building it.

It’s a non-monetized, fun interview and thanks to the Mods here to enable me to share it.

20 cent's Return Bottle Era

Can you all remember back to when you received twenty cent's for every large Coke, Fanta, Schweppes bottle returned to any Milk Bar/Corner-store.

I remember me and a mate returned three full crates at once one time, and bagged $7.20😁

We felt like kings with all that coin😃 fun times

Truth Newspaper

Remember the old Truth Newspaper with the page 3 girls back in the 80's, 90's?.

When I was a much younger man I was a huge horse racing enthusiast (still am really) and they did have an excellent formguide so I used to buy it regularly. Always felt like something of a perv though.

Urbanspoon

I guess it has been long enough that Urbanspoon is now nostalgia territory!

I will still swear to this day folding it into Zomato (after their buy-out) was the worst decision ever. It crashed and burned so badly in the local market.

Urbanspoon had such a such a high regard in the community. I recall many a ma-and-pa type restaurants proudly displaying their Urbanspoon ratings and reviews. Urbanspoon was such a go-to for me especially for smaller Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants in Melbourne.

Nobody like Zomato. It went over with the Australian community like a lead balloon. It really was a case of a big multi-national not understanding the local market.

I am not even 100% sure any of the newer sites have filled the space Urbanspoon had in the Australian community. It had such an ubiquitous position in a lot of our hearts. At best these days I use what reviews pop up on Google/Google Maps. And we've never really adopted some of the overseas restaurant review sites (like Yelp).

Honestly I feel like there is a legit gap in the Australian market here. Pity I don't have the capital or the tech-skills to create one - hahahaha!

Forgotten sport - Vigoro

It seemed to die out in Brisbane as a general activity when I was in high school in the mid-80's. It was girls-only, and they didn't seem too interested in it either.

Apparently it's still around but I haven't seen it being played in yonks.
