Czechia draws red line on further EU sanctions against Israel

>Czechia will oppose any further EU trade sanctions against Israel, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka said on Wednesday after talks in Prague with Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar.

>Speaking alongside the Israeli foreign minister in Prague, Macinka said Czechia had serious reservations about last week’s EU sanctions package targeting violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank.

>“We got into a situation where we would have been completely alone and blocking all 27 member states,” he said, adding that Prague ultimately backed what he described as a compromise because it did not include Israeli politicians.

>“But from now on, our position can be more self-confident”, he said.

>Czech support for Israel has long stood out within Europe, rooted in historical ties dating back to former Czechoslovak President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and reinforced after the fall of communism. Last year, Czechia abstained in a UN General Assembly vote backing a two-state solution.

>Research by Prague’s Herzl Centre for Israel Studies found Czech society remains broadly pro-Israel, though views on the Gaza war are increasingly divided, particularly among younger voters and women.

>Macinka also ruled out supporting any suspension – partial or full – of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. “On this, our position will be a clear no,” he said.

I received an Etsy order from someone in Israel

This is such small scale, they ordered a pair of embroidery scissors. But should I just cancel it? And if I cancel it, I have to provide a reason why I canceled and I don't want to risk my account being banned or something since my Etsy is 90% of my income and I'm disabled. Any advice is appreciated.

Edit: I really appreciate everyone who gave me thoughtful answers for this. I canceled the order and basically said I'm unable to ship to that region at this time. Hopefully they don't get upset and try to get me banned or anything 😅

Working with an Israeli in the UK

Update: Decided my initial instincts are right and I won't work with them. If someone asks I'll point to the social media posts I found (see my edit below) and highlight BDS. As much as it cuts off work for me, at least I won't be compromising myself.

Original Post: An Israeli lives in Israel but does remote working in the UK. For all intents and purposes whenever we speak and have had to work together we have the same values, etc. (i.e. left wing politics) and where they live has never been relevant to work.

There may be an opportunity to do business with them in the UK as we work in the same field. However, I feel uncomfortable about it (i.e. living in Israel is a political act, etc.).

Has anyone else had to navigate this before? Did you just never entertain working with an Israeli or speak to them about their views before you make a decision, etc.

My worries are:

  • Starting a conversation about whether we work together based on their stance on Israel can be twisted into being racist/antisemitic.
  • It could end up getting myself blacklisted from the very people I need to work with if the above occurs.
  • Avoiding them risks stifling my career.

My initial approach was to avoid any opportunity to work with them, but that feels unfair (i.e. make a judgement about them before I have spoken to them about it) - but it also means I will don't risk losing other work if it turns out they are pro-Israeli.

There is also the chance that other people will boycott them if it turns out they are pro-Israel...

As you can tell - I am not a confrontational person if I can avoid it and I also like to assume the best in people.

Edit: Thanks to a suggestion here I did a quick search of their social media and the only thing I could find is responses to Oct 7 and two troubling points:

  • Claim that the western media is bias and silent on the number of rockets being fired into Israel by Hamas
  • A post asking how can Hamas have fuel for rockets and not for incubators (this has made me think my instincts are right)

Although they also have reposts focusing on peace between religions, etc. and nothing else political that I can see.

There's something going on behind the scenes

The fact that so many of the biggest companies in America have been burying their heads in the sand and supporting Israel through thick and thin reveals that Israel must have some kind of leverage against some of the most powerful people in high finance. From a purely fiduciary standpoint, the behaviour of these companies defies logic. Israel is a pariah state. Not only are they not innovative by any means, but they're not particularly rich, and most importantly, they're a disaster when it comes to anything related to public relations. It has become patently obvious that there's some kind of influence-peddling going on behind the scenes.

Another Eid is coming, and my younger siblings still dream of celebrating while living through war in Gaza

In Gaza, we are exhausted. Three years of war have drained us mentally and physically.

My name is Osama. I’m a university student in my final year. During this war, my family and I lost our home and everything we had. We also lost many relatives and friends, and since then we have been living without any real stability.

My mother and I went back to our city more than once, trying to recover anything from under the rubble, but without success.

We left our home at night under the bombing without taking anything with us. That’s why today we need almost everything. We have no gas, no refrigerator, no proper kitchen tools, and only very few belongings left.

Life in Gaza has become unbelievably expensive, and we can barely afford basic things like food and water. For the third year, even drinking cold water has become something we miss. Especially with summer coming and the heat getting worse, sometimes we just wish for a cold drink of water.

For three years we have struggled every day just to secure basic needs. There is barely any electricity, cooking gas is extremely expensive, and prices are far beyond what people can afford. One kilogram of cooking gas costs around $35, so my mother often cooks using wood and fire. My father used to work as an electrician, but now he has no work and spends his time trying to get food aid from humanitarian organizations whenever he can.

The hardest part is not only surviving. My younger siblings grew up surrounded by war, fear, and deprivation. Now Eid Al-Adha is coming, and I cannot even provide simple things that once felt normal, like new clothes, sweets, or a good meal.

Despite all the pain, I still try to put a smile on my younger siblings’ faces, and on my mother’s and father’s faces too, even through small things that might make them happy for a little while.

In Gaza, we no longer live thinking about the future. We only try to get through one more day.

That is why I am asking for help. Any donation, even a small one, can help me bring some happiness to my family, even if only for a few days.

And if you cannot donate, sharing our story would still mean a lot to us.

Thank you to everyone who helps or even shares our story .

Donation link in the comments.

Israel is not merely defending itself

Israel is not merely defending itself. You cannot claim self-defence against a population that you hold under an illegal military occupation and a suffocating blockade. It is like Nazi Germany claiming that its actions against those resisting in the Warsaw Ghetto were self-defence. Israel claiming it is defending itself is proof that Israel is a genocidal regime and that it must be stopped through boycott, divestment, and sanctions.

Looking for alternatives for my favorite energy drink

Hey, y'all. I posted in the Energy Drinks subreddit, big mistake. Basically, I just want to know if anyone here has suggestions for the Celsius Fizz-Free Peach Mango Energy Drink. It's literally my favorite and has gotten me through so many tough nights of studying in grad school, but I still have one year, and I am desperate for a good non-carbonated mango-flavored energy drink that isn't on the boycott list.

I do NOT wanna support Celsius, and I've tried several products, but all of them taste weird or ruined my health. The Yerba Madre Mango drink gave me the worst acid reflux and heartburn of my LIFE. And the Bloom Peach Mango tastes like a vat of chemicals mixed with a mango sparkling water. And I do NOT wanna be drinking a spicy fuckin' energy drink in the morning like the Ghost Mango Fuego. Pleaseeeeeeee let me know if you guys have any suggestions of things I could try. I'm in the US, btw

Thank you!

Be careful at liquidation retailers

I’m a budget conscious mom who also boycotts Israel. I was shopping at Ollie’s, which for those of you who don’t know is an American discount retailer that buys overstock, liquidation and items from bankrupt retailers. A lot of items in there are from Israel, and not the usual items you have to check for like Hummus, but items like hair mousse, body wash, laundry hampers and kids chairs. As more people boycott Israel and their items go unsold the more end up at these type of retailers. So a PSA to check the labels when shopping at these kinds of retailers.
