'The modern Babhans are the representatives of the ancient local Babhans'

Source- The indo aryan races by Ramprasad Chandra

The Bhumihar/Babhan tribe's the representative of the ancient Babhans of Magadha.

The Babhans were among the first indo aryan waves into the region, who went on to become the local ruling class of magadha

As its said 'magadha is country of the babhans'

Some modern brahmin groups are trying to appropriate the term for themselves although it has no academic/historical support.

However the modern brahmins of magadha (mainly shakdwipis and other migrated groups) do not involve themselves in this larp and consider themselves to be brahmin , not babhan.

PM Jawaharlal Nehru’s 1954 letter to Bihar CM Sri Krishna Sinha expressing concern over the harsh impact of Zamindari Abolition on dispossessed zamindars

In the letter Nehru acknowledges that many zamindars had already lost their rental income while compensation payments were delayed. He notes that some estates were auctioned for almost nothing because they no longer generated income after abolition. He even remarks that although technically legal the process appeared very unjust.

Maithil Babhans?

I've seen that some of y'all hold the view that Bhumihars don't exist in Mithila and few of those who live there today are a product of recent migration. Then, how come places like Darbhanga had huge Babhan population before they started identifying as Brahmans, were these Maithil Brahmins calling themselves 'Babhans' or did Bhumihars actually exist in huge numbers in Mithila before they merged their caste with Maithil Brahmins?

Tekari Raj Map based on Old pargana divisions of the Mughal era

The Map of the old district of Behar, showing the parganas that came under the control of the zamindars of Sanaut – Tikari in the early 18th century. The Rajas of Sanaut – Tikari came to occupy the central part of the old Sircar (or district) of Behar including the town of Gaya.

The region to the east was the territory of Raja Kamgar Khan Mayi of Narhat – Samai with his headquarters at Hisua near Nawada. On the west was the territory of Raja Bishun Singh of Siris – Kutumba with his headquarters at Powai near Aurangabad. Across the river Son, further west, the region of Sasaram – Chainpur was the territory of Raja Pahalwan Singh of Nokha.

These zamindar rajas of south Bihar had formed their de-facto ruling chieftaincies in the early part of the 18th century, at the time of the weakening of the Mughal goverment after the death of Aurangzeb.

Here's a list of such prominent chieftaincies in each region-

•Magadha - Tikari Raj

•Saran - Kalyanpur Chieftaincy aka hathwa raj

•Champaran - Bettiah raj

•Shahabaad - ujjainiya zamindars of bhojpur
