Bank of America may not be the safest place to keep your money

I noticed that Bank of America is flooding Reddit with ads lately, which don't allow any comments. So I thought I'd share an experience that a good friend of mine just had with them. She had her money in a savings account there, which wasn't getting more than pennies in interest; she just thought it would be safe. But without asking or telling her, they let some guy in Florida, who apparently had gotten hold of her Social Security number, do a wire transfer of all her funds into his account. Then the scammer got on the phone with her to try and alarm her into divulging more personal information. She didn't fall for it, but he kept her on the phone long enough (pretending that he was calling from the bank) that their arbitrary 15-minute window for cancelling a wire transfer had expired.

When she came into the bank in person, the people there said they thought they could recover her money, since it was in another B of A account. BUT they would need to launch an investigation, and until that ran its course, her funds would be frozen for 60 to 90 business days - which is a lot more in calendar days. The fact that she needed her money to pay for bills, rent, and necessities didn't matter to them. Repeated calls trying to get at least some money to live on got a response of "stop bothering us".

I was astonished that they were so high-handed about this, but there's apparently nothing anybody at the bank can do - it's all in the hands of some secret department that can't be reached. All I can say is - think twice before depositing your hard-earned funds in this bank, especially if you think you might need them. My friend did nothing wrong - except to trust Bank of America with her money.

Debit card security

Learning about how to keep my checking account secure and have a few questions about virtual cards and digital wallets.

  1. Do I need a virtual card or is adding the debit card to my digital wallet fine?

  2. Can I use the digital wallet to get money out of an ATM?

  3. If I lock the physical card, will my recurring T-Mobile debit go through ((I don’t remember if I used my debit card or checking account routing number to pay)

  4. If I lock the physical card, I can still use the digital wallet, right?

  5. I have the Visa debit card. Should I switch to the atm card without the Visa logo?

  6. Is there a way to lock down the virtual card? Does that make sense to do?

Thanks for the help!

Robbed of over $1,000

Close to $1,100 in fraudulent charges were made online from our debit card back in May. I called Bank of America who assured me they would get this taken care of, and then issued me a temporary credit for the amount taken. They stated I didn't need to do anything else. Today they reversed that credit, and took the money back. After I called they're fraud department and spoke to someone who barely spoke English, I was told that my claim was refused and that I had been sent a letter on August 3rd stating that they would take the money back on August 18th. First of all I never got the letter, second of all WTF lol. These were 100% fraudulent charges, but they said they couldn't prove that, so end of story. The moral of the story is, and I've heard this before and wish I had heeded the advice, Bank Of America is shady AF and should be avoided at all costs.

Can't get authenticated over the phone by a text message

I need to re activate my credit card, doing online does not work.

I use a textnow number on my account (I live outside the US) which worked fine up until recently. Now each person I talk to, tells me he can not get me authenticated with this number.
Purchased another number from Slynumber, does not work either...

Any other options you can suggest?

Current issues with BofA checking?

Are there known current issues with Bank of America checking? I'm unable to sync my Quicken Classic. Hasn't worked for a couple days. I've removed it from One Step Update, added it back, Validated the account, I've even opened a new account that won't sync. Quicken sets it up as expected, BofA authorizes but then I get CC-506 error. Same thing every time....

Would appreciate any suggestions or insights. Thx

Help with fraudulent charge case

OK. Here's the whole story.

In late April of this year someone charged almost $7000 at Home Depot on my wife's credit card. We immediately reported it as a fraudulent transaction.

BofA closed the account and issued a new card. They then reversed the decision saying it was a PIN transaction and the CVV was used.

We have filed a police report. We have talked to Home Depot. We have gone into the Bank of America branch. We have provided proof that my wife was not physically at the Home Depot at that time (she's a therapist and was with a client and can prove it.)

We have done everything humanly possible to prove that this was not a charge that we made but we are still on the hook.

Has anyone encountered something like this and been able to resolve it?

We are at our wit's end!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Struggling adding Paze to BofA

Help! I can't seem to find a way to link Paze to BofA. If you go to Paze website and "log into" BofA. It takes you to BofA login and that's it. If you try to add on app under digital wallets only Apple Pay and PayPal is there. Finally on their website after literally over an hour of searching there is a Paze tab. "add to Paze" but then after trying to add I get an error. How can I add???

Just got off the phone with BofA and other than being rude there is nothing they can do. Which I figured they wouldn't be too helpful but still called.

Bank of America blocked access to my cerdit card while I'm out of the country - is there any way I can make my monthly payment?

I'm currently in the UK for a few weeks.

I called BoA about some minor issue, they tried to send me a text to authenticate me, I didn't get the text so I was unable to resolve the issue, but shortly after my BoA credit card was blocked, and my online banking and app were blocked.

After several calls with the fraud department it all ends the same way, they cannot authenticate me over the phone, they can't send a text to authenticate me, I need to visit a financial center with two forms of ID to unblock my card and accounts. Obviously I can't do this for a few weeks yet.

In the meantime my BoA credit card payment is due today. I have an automatic payment set up to pay it off in full but as part of this I received an email from BoA saying 'Due to changes in your account status, your Bill Pay service has been deactivated'.

I've tried calling to find out if my payment will go through but they won't talk to me because they can't authenticate me. I've tried calling the credit card payment automated line, but as soon as I enter my account number the automated system transfers me to the fraud department.
BoA have blocked every part of my financial relationship with them until I present myself in person with two forms of ID.

What am I supposed to do? The main thing I care about is not missing the credit card payment, I can sort the rest out when I get home.

BOA integration with ChatGPT

I got notified by ChatGPT there is now direct integration with the BOA app to read supported financial data such as balances and transactions and it does not give it free-form access to log into the bank or move money.

I do use ChatGPT often for my finances and advice etc.. do you think this integration will be safe?

Financial Crimes Position* Need Advice!

Hi everyone, back story is my wife, mother and I all worked for the same AMC that was bought out by BoA a few years ago. I was in operations and was not brought over. I am currently a Loan Officer at New American Funding but trying hard to get into the bank at their financial crimes position.

My wife is unsure on how she could help me get noticed here. We all have the same friends that work at the bank but she said she is unsure who she would even ask at HR or HOW to provide a recommendation. My post is targeted at active BoA employees and would like any advice on how or if my family at the bank can help with this. I mean, isn't the saying "it's about who you know"??

Have any of you helped get a friend or family member a job at the bank?

Help

I had a wire transfer in July 13 in the amount of $24,600. Then I pulled the money out of that account into another account. Then August 3 I had a check made to me so I could get my roof worked on. The check was supposed to clear August 7. When I went to get my money they closed my account and took my funds. They said the wire transfer was fraudulent but it wasn’t. I don’t understand how that can happen. They took my money and I need help to see if I can get it back. The $24,600 is gone now and it was used to pay for something else. I don’t have that no more.

Dispute Transaction Advice

Hi everyone,

Made a dispute last month, and the decision just came in. The main gist is, I made a payment for rent on my credit card, and the land lord claimed they never got it and supplied a “payment failed” screenshot. I then made a claim saying that the merchant never got the payment, and therefore I never received the “good”.

Today it came back that I still have to pay it. I called again and they said they are re-opening it. The initial documentation had the aforementioned screenshot, as well as all discussion relating to the failed payment.

Now that it’s being re-opened, can anyone help me with any ideas on what to supply this time so it doesn’t get denied again. It is a large sum, and there is no way I can pay this. Thank you in advance!

BofA runaround on Paze $10 credits

Used Paze on a BofA card for the Spend $10, Get $10 Back promo (up to $100 back per card, 6/15 to 9/10/26). Made 10 qualifying purchases between 6/26 and 7/4. Only 1 credit has posted (came in on 7/2, just a couple days after that purchase). Still missing the other 9. For comparison, I also used Paze with a Chase card and got that credit within a few days, no issues.

Here's the runaround so far:

  • 7/21: (call 1), never heard of Paze. Got a 4 digit case number (turns out to be fake), told to wait 7-10 business days.
  • 7/30 (call 2): Told there's no Paze promo with BofA at all. Then, same call, BofA flipped and said Paze is the one who owes me the money and I should contact Paze instead. I looked up the Terms of service on Paze's website, it says that if you don't get a statement credit for a qualifying purchase, contact the bank that issued the card, not Paze.
  • 7/30 (call 3): Called back same day for a different rep. This one said no problem, opened a case, gave me a case number with a 10-digit reference.
  • 8/17 (call 4): When i called I was told the case number wasn't needed and to just re-explain the whole thing from scratch. Was then told this is a brand new issue, first they're hearing of it, and to wait another 1-2 billing cycles. So what, wait another 1-2 months?

The terms are pretty clear that if a qualifying purchase doesn't get credited, you contact the card issuer, not Paze. So "call Paze" was the wrong answer from the start. Doesn't help that every rep seems to be starting from zero and none of the case numbers seem to matter.

One credit posting fine while the other 9 from the same window sit untouched makes it seem like this isn't a "the whole promo is broken" issue so much as BofA's system only processing some of the batch. Or maybe BofA is completely mismanaged.

Anyone else dealing with this on BofA specifically? Curious if it's a systemic issue on their end or if I'm just getting unlucky with reps. Also open to next steps if anyone's had luck escalating (CFPB complaint, etc).

Check Deposit Question

Deposited two checks via a teller last week; was okay with them being held to verify funds and stuff - no issues.

Now this morning they say this:
DEBIT HOLD ON 08/17
PENDING DEBIT HOLD ON 08/17

I got an email saying both checks would be held until NEXT Monday (which is okay, still not in a hurry for the funds at all as I have a substantial balance).

My question is the pending debit holds there, because they placed a longer deposit on the checks, or did they just flat out reject both of them, I don’t see any fees for returned checks or anything.

Abysmal system and pathetic customer service

I got the Alaska Atmos Rewards cards back in March when there was an offer of 3x points on rent as well as a 10% match on linking Merrill Lynch accounts, effectively making it a 3.3x rewards on rent.

I used this card to pay for my rent for 3 months, but only got the 3x during the first 2 months. I only got 1x in the 2nd and 3rd month. I tried calling Alaska Atmos customer support as well as Bank of America support multiple times over the last few months, but they by far have the worst customer service in the history of mankind! Not easy to navigate through the app, incredibly long wait times, promises of getting back to me in a day or two but never returning back, bouncing me around from one person to the other.

The biggest joke - the number listed on the card gets you to an automated message for a marketing service!! No live agent whatsoever.

Bank of America, you are light years behind Chase and Capital One. Please stop issuing credit cards if you cannot live up to your promises and provide adequate support.

Also, please stop false advertising bonuses, because you are a FRAUD and do not grant said bonuses.

I have a WIRE Transfer in Euros that I haven't received yet!

On Sunday, August 9, a wire transfer in euros was destined to my account. And the organization are sure it was released from their bank account.

Where is the amount?

Update: Turns out it was stuck at the intermediate bank and they needed more verification.
