The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has initiated legal action against Character.AI, alleging that its chatbot Emilie misrepresented itself as a licensed psychiatrist, including fabricating a medical license number, violating state laws.
Gov. Josh Shapiro stressed the importance of transparency in health-related online interactions and said the state would not allow companies to use AI tools to "mislead" people.
The lawsuit is the first to specifically target chatbots posing as medical professionals, and follows previous wrongful death lawsuits against Character.AI regarding underage users.
