New York City Hasn’t Built This Many Apartments Since 1965

paywall: https://archive.ph/RXVud

submission statement: New York City added 38,682 apartment units last year, the most since 1965, driven by steady job growth, high rents, and new zoning and tax incentives. Despite soaring construction costs, developers remain optimistic due to sustained rent growth in the unregulated market. However, the city’s housing shortage persists, with an estimated 400,000 homes needed to meet demand.

Not trying to be a Spider-Man glazer as I do mean this genuinely. Why does it seem like Spider-Man never has a genuinely bad movie?

I mean from the Maguire movies to the Garfield movies to the Holland movies and including the Spiderverse movies, it doesn’t seem like any of them are really “bad” movies.

Yet while other heroes have great movies (like Batman) others in their library are mid/bad. And it seems like Spidey’s movies are always decent.

NYC Fireworks was a DISASTER

a shit show is a better fitting title tbh

i scored tix in the "lottery" that seems like everyone won or they decided to head down without a ticket to test their luck. ZERO organization whatsoever with the lines or "security." 2+ hours waiting either only 2 event staff seen the whole time, 6 cops total who just sat on the sides while the crowd had resorted to governing itself. we were shoulder to shoulder, the crowd literally walking like penguins with each step. i watched three people elbowing others to get through, had to yell my damn self because people were pushing and almost started a stampede.

a ticketed event and no one scanning tickets so the entire NYC got to bumrush the entrance and get in.

im a native NYer and only did this cause it was ticketed & naively thought i got lucky. had i known this shit was gonna be like trying to watch the ball drop on NYE i woulda stayed home!

all that frustration just to see 1/3 of the show on the brooklyn bridge. my family all watched it on TV and told me it was spectacular and were expecting me to agree but i just ranted about the absolutely shit show that was

NYC marathon travel prep

My lady is running the NYC marathon this year and we’re trying to figure out the best area to stay (Airbnb) and the best way to get to and from the race.

Staying in manhattan is basically out of the question due to budget. She’s looking at queens and Brooklyn, and I suggested New Jersey city, but she’s worried it’ll be too hectic crossing the bridge. I assume all forms of transportation will be crazy on race day so might as well not rule it out.

Would love to hear suggestions and any helpful tips. I lived in NYC for a year so feel fairly comfortable navigating around, but have never tried planning around a big event like this

ETA: I learned about the Airbnb restrictions right after posting

Last night’s squall in NYC.

We were in the middle of the of the Sail250 temporary anchorage, and nobody could get proper scope out due to how crowded it was.

We bailed as soon as it blew in, pulled the anchor and just used the channel to run up and down until it passed. Unfortunately I didn’t have my helm enclosure up so had to take hail to the face for a few minutes.

Max gust seen was 62kt.

Thankfully nothing broken here, but not all in the anchorage were so lucky. Saw plenty of people tangled up afterwards, one boat taking on water, and lots of missing cushions, 4th of July decorations, and other debris.

Rockefeller Plaza might lowkey become one of the best public World Cup watch spots in NYC today

I'm not sure if everyone here has noticed this yet, but Rockefeller Center has these huge outdoor screens set up around the World Cup 26, and today feels like the kind of day where it could quietly turn into a proper NYC football spot.

I walked by recently and the setup looked way better than I expected. Big screen, open plaza, tourists mixed with actual football fans, and that weird Manhattan energy where everyone suddenly becomes emotionally invested in a match they did not plan to watch.

Could be a fun option if you do not want to fight for a seat at a bar or forkout crazy prices just to stand in a crowded area. With knockout stage matches now starting to feel very serious, I feel like this place could get loud pretty and fast.

Has anyone watched a match there yet? I'm curious to know if the atmosphere is actually good once the game starts.

Does Cobble Hill still celebrate Bastille Day (Sunday July, 12th)?

I remember heading to Smith Street about 15-16 years ago and seeing the celebration. Bunch of frenchman playing petant in the street covered in sand.

I'm searching to see if there will be a celebration in Cobble Hill this year and I'm coming up empty. Does anyone have the scoop?

Mamdani offers a contrast to Trump’s vision for America in a 250th anniversary address

“Today marks 250 years since a small group of newspaper editors, farmers, and soldiers signed a document declaring our nation’s independence — a truth that feels self-evident now but was revolutionary then.

What a privilege us Americans have, to live in a nation that every one of its inhabitants can shape. What an honor us New Yorkers have, to look out over our city’s waters from the shores where so many Americans bravely entered their country for the first time.

Today and all days, let us remember that patriotism is not pretending our nation is without flaws. Patriotism is every act of righteous dissent — because loving our country means fighting for the best version of it.

Happy Fourth of July, New York City.”

PSA: The ice pack trick for cooling body temperature

I know this isn't NYC specific but it's heat wave specific!

To anyone struggling with the heat especially without AC, I highly recommend the trick where you put an ice pack wrapped in a towel between your thighs. Because we have major veins/arteries in our thighs, it helps to keep overall body temp down. It really has helped us, especially in getting through hot nights.

We have an AC we have been using intermittently, but I have done multiple summers (both in NYC and down south) without AC.

Con Ed has also been doing some distributions of dry ice for people in southeast Queens at Resorts World Casino since there have been a lot of power outages. Hopefully this weather breaks, but just in case, FYI.

EDIT: if you aren't familiar with dry ice, I'm NOT suggesting putting dry ice on your skin, wrapped or unwrapped, just to be clear that's dangerous! Dry ice can be useful for cooling your environment if you lose power but don't touch it. Stick to regular ice for your body.

Please replenish your electrolytes and keep your fucking shoes on.

Lots of people doing the heat sways today. Water by itself is not enough in this weather.

And also don’t walk around barefoot. Are people serious with this nasty shit?

New York Christmas Hidden Gems

Hello! I'm heading to NYC with my partner in December and would love to know what you considered a real hidden gem at Christmas time?

We've been before at Christmas and most lists and videos suggest the same things so would love to know from some locals, what are your go-to annual Christmas events / spaces / experiences?

I'm thinking independent Christmas markets, carol concerts, live jazz, smaller displays etc.
