Has anyone seen this man? Unable to get a response from our Council Member's office.

I have lived in Hell's Kitchen long enough to have interacted with Council Member's Corey Johnson and Erik Bottcher. I'd say that at least once a year I'd have cause to drop them an email about something: a blocked wheelchair ramp, my opposition to casinos in the District, etc... Their offices always responded quickly, sometimes more helpful than others, but always responded. A staff member at Corey Johnson's office once even reached out to my landlord and helped me resolve a disagreement between us and thanks to that staff member I am still in the same building, still friendly with the landlord.

But after Council Member Carl Wilson was elected I dropped his office an email about a local issue and ... crickets. I followed up by phone, was asked to leave a voicemail and then ... crickets. Is anyone having better luck? Is the office having trouble getting up and running? Is there a staff member who might be more responsive?

(The council members have been handing down this post to their staff members in a way that has always seem too clubby to me. Bottcher worked for Johnson, then ran and won. WIlson worked for Bottcher, then ran and won. I'm beginning to think our council needs more competitive races.)

Current municipal strategy. 9th Avenue, 37th Street, Hell's Kitchen.

How common is it in your neighborhoods to have cyclists zipping around you on the sidewalk? In Hell's Kitchen, it's common.

Gen X freelance artist in the U.S. seeks penpal

Seeking queer friend to maintain a correspondence with. Fan of indie rock music, contemporary art / performance, exercise and lefty politics. Some options include a texter friend on WhatsApp or a correspondent I trade emails with. Could discuss big ideas and quotidian challenges. Prefer honesty and vulnerability without self pity. Closer to my age would be ideal.

Border finds the criminal, Law & Order SVU, Season 24, Ep. 8

The criminal was bleeding and hid in the cellar of a corner store (we call them bodegas). The Border barked like crazy and pulled on the leash. Great casting!

Amazing Documentary at IFC about Queer Legend, Tally Brown

I only knew this cabaret star by name but the documentary blew me away. She collaborated with Warhol's Factory, was a staple at Max's Kansas City (the downtown nightclub) and her take on NYC in the 60s and 70s is insightful as f**k. There is performance footage of Divine and Holly Woodlawn and our own girl Tally performing at the baths. I reckon it won't be showing much longer. If you are a fan of New York history, under ground art, or queer history, check it out. Also a great tutorial about how to make it as a creative in this nutty town.

Rising number of encampments in Hell's Kitchen, 311 response is lacking

This morning in the area bordered by 44th and 46^(th) Streets and 11th Avenue and the West Side Highway there were six different full-on encampments plus at least seven other homeless folks sleeping on the street with some amount of sleeping gear, but separate from the encampments. I walk my dog and jog through this area but have begun avoiding certain blocks entirely now. It's also part of the route that tourists take to get to the Intrepid, the Circle Line tours, the docks for the cruise ships and of course the piers.

I think if you took a poll, the majority of New Yorkers would say that our response to homelessness should be driven by compassion and prioritize housing and drug rehabilitation. But it seems like the city has removed enforcement but not set up any alternatives. It sucks that folks are in these conditions. It also sucks having to avoid the broken glass, used syringes and human waste.

This subreddit only allows one photo per post but I submitted a 311 report with six different photos (no people, just structures). Here is the exact text 311 sent me a mere few hours after I submitted that report:

“The New York City Police Department responded to the complaint and their investigation determined that no criminal violation existed. The condition was corrected without the need to issue a summons or effect an arrest. If the problem persists, please contact 311 to create another complaint. If possible, provide contact information so responding officers may reach out to you for more details. If necessary, your complaint may be referred to your local precinct's special operations units (Quality of Life, etc.). Thank you for your attention to this matter. We count on New Yorkers like yourself to maintain a safe City, so please let us know if you see other conditions that require our attention.”

They said the condition was corrected, which is not true. All the encampments are still there. I don't know why anyone would be motivated to report encampments if this is the response they're going to get.

Recommendations for laser technicians (not organization) in New York City?

Does anyone have a favorite technician in New York City? I’m especially looking for someone kind and knowledgeable who includes me in their decision making and tailors their approach to each client.

In short, a technician who listens well, fills me in on what their thinking and considers my specific goals. I’m mixed race and would love to work with someone who prioritizes avoiding hyper pigmentation. My ideal technicians would also ask me about my pain tolerance, prior treatment experience, tolerance for downtown (I work outdoors) – in short, someone who personalizes what they are doing and explains their recommendations.

(If this sounds obvious rest assured I have had some technicians who saw me as a widget on an assembly line, asked me almost nothing and just started lasering.)

I’m at the point where the technician is more important to me than the organization they work for.

Applied for US renewal online, expedited service, June 28. Received July 11. Took thirteen days.

Couple of notes:

- I did not spring for express mail service. They still sent it Priority Mail USPS.
– I took my photo at home with an iPhone. After I uploaded the photo, I was sure I messed up as my face was slightly askew. Photo was accepted.
– There is no way to select expedited service if you apply online. I had to call afterwards and add that service.
- No extra pages.

⚣ ❤️ Taking a moment to be grateful for PrEP and the access we have in New York ⚣ ❤️

I had let my PrEP prescription expire because I wasn’t going out much this year and work has been (exciting but) intense. Now it's pride month and I decided I was going to stock up on PrEP. (No explanation necessary on this subreddit, I’m sure.)

I like my doctor, but honestly I didn't want to have to deal with the hassle of making an appointment (they don't always answer the phone over there), then waiting a week or so, then going across town, then having to explain billing to her (her practice is primarily straight so her billing department never quite understands that PrEP screening is preventive and therefore has to be coded correctly so it’s free). Etcetera.

So I just did a quick search online and I found Qcare. I have clearly not kept up because it blew me away that I did not even have to speak to a provider! It took me 10 minutes to fill out their online form. I did have to self-report my heart rate and blood pressure which I was able to cut and paste from my medical records on my existing doctor’s patient portal. (But frankly, I have a feeling that if I had left those fields blank there would still have been a way to complete the process.)

Literally the next day Qcare texts me that I can go pick up my PrEP at GMHC in midtown. I live in Hell’s Kitchen so it was close. They could also have delivered it to my place but I wanted it faster. Free, quick, efficient. The blood work for future prescriptions can be done via an at-home kit which they have already shipped to me. Shout out to Qcare.

(There are other ways to do this online as well, I am sure. This was just the first place that came up for me.)

I’m old enough to remember when there was no treatment for HIV and certainly nothing preventive besides a condom. Now I am getting PrEP prescribed for free in minutes. Shout out to all the queers, activists, scientists and allies that made this entire system possible.

I am now ready for Pride month. 🏳‍🌈

🎈 Making an effort for Pride 🎈

Happy Pride!

Went to visit my friend today. His building always puts up displays in the lobby for holidays - menorah and christmas tree in December, toy bunnies for Easter, etc.. Here is what they did for Pride. The gay rainbow on the stack of balloons is sending me! But I love that the ladies in the front office made an effort.

Getting to go out on our balcony is like my BT suddenly getting Wifi after being offline too long

I live in an apartment in a big city and I am lucky to have a balcony. My BT gets frequent long walks every day and we have plenty of parks nearby. But! ... the minute she hears the door to the balcony start to open she is up like a shot and racing to join me outside. It doesn't matter what she is doing or even if she's napping - she prefers to be out on the balcony. She runs out to the balcony even faster than she jogs over to the kitchen when she hears her dinner being prepared. If I am working on my laptop out there she leaps up on the outdoor sofa and snuggles her rear next to my leg. (See above.)

The balcony is basically a sensory explosion for her — smell, sound, wind — all constantly changing. From inside, it's a static, familiar environment. The moment that door opens, she gets a draft of fresh air carrying all kinds of information: what animals passed by, what the neighbors cooked, what the weather smells like. For a dog's nose, that's the equivalent of suddenly getting wifi after being offline all day.

(All of this does make me think that I need to make her food more varied and interesting. The fact that she bolts for the balcony even faster then she goes for dinner makes me fear her meals have become predictable and boring. The balcony is a box of surprises every single time.)
