Who is this lil beetle guy?
I'm in New England, reading a book out back of my apartment and this guy has been hanging around for a minute.
Found this gorgeous fella in our manufacturing plant today.
I know they have a painful pinch, it chose not to. It did choose to release some oil though, and it definitely smells like sour milk. I released it outside so that it may continue its search for caterpillars.
Those darn Japanese Beetles
Help! The Japanese Beetle invasion is insane this year. I try to do organic gardening as much as possible but sometimes I have to do whatever it takes.
I'm relatively new to this area (middle Missouri transplanted from Chicago area)and still getting used to the gardening challenges of the area, one of which is the massive amount of Japanese beetles skeletonizing my cherry trees, my roses, cannas, and many other plants. I've been regularly doing the dish soap/water bowl trick, and even used neem oil but it seems they keep coming in higher numbers!!
I've never had issues with this nasty bug at my previous property. I plan to get chickens at some point, and heard they love to eat the grubs and beetles, but for now, I'm at my wits end. I'm half tempted to get a Japanese beetle trap and tie it in a tree near a farm field a half mile away, will that do the trick? I hate these bugs!! Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Trypoxylus dichotomus tsunobosonis "Taiwanese Rhinoceros Beetles"
My 3rd species of beetles. I'm so excited to breed these.
What a beautiful beetle! Species?
So I’m sitting on my patio, and feel something bounce off my backside. The patio is partially covered, no bushes above me … and then I see this one on its back, legs flailing. I love the intricate pattern.

Why the firefly is much more innovative than any lamp
The firefly converts 98 percent of the energy it consumes into light—whereas the efficiency of modern LED lights is only 50 percent. Interesting text!

Beetle (advice needed!)
hey all! i’m not usually caring for beetles, so i know very little about them unfortunately. today i found this reddish brown stag lying on his back on my porch. i thought he was gone at first, but i put my finger down and he grasped on!
my question now is this; can he be saved/helped or is it his time?
if it is his time, do i let him go naturally or can i put him in my freezer to pin later?
currently trying to give him some cherry but i dont think he likes it very much.
he keeps flipping over no matter how much i try to help him stay upright. am i prolonging his suffering? i dont know what to really do

prosopocoilus antilopus advice
I’ll be receiving a breeding pair of these stags and I was wondering if anyone has any first hand advice about keeping them?
Anyone else have a Japanese Beetle problem?
We have a trap but it doesn’t look like it is working that well. How have you dealt with this issue?
Learning to fly

Hi everyone, meet my Allotopus moellenkampi babai — a stunning golden stag beetle. When he first emerged as an adult, his wings were weak. He could barely lift off. Today, he’s a confident flyer zooming around the living room. Let’s watch his journey.
Here he is in the beginning — short, clumsy hops and quick drops. You can see him struggling to stay airborne and land before even taking off. His wings needed time to strengthen. Look at those tentative flaps… adorable but not quite there yet.
Fast forward a bit, and he’s making real progress. Longer flights now, from my hand to the floor, testing different directions. Notice how his control improves — steadier paths, fewer crash landings. This golden beauty is building strength every day.
Now he’s unstoppable! Watch him soar across the living room in every direction — left, right, up high, low passes. Circling the lamp, dodging obstacles, full laps around the room. Those powerful wings are fully ready. It’s incredible how far he’s come.
From barely able to fly to ruling the living room airspace — that’s my Allotopus moellenkampi babai. These beetles are amazing. Thanks for watching! Like and follow for more insect adventures.
Is he dead?
Is my Japanese rhinoceros beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus) pupa dead?
My pupa entered the pupal stage on June 6th, so it has been about a month.
At first, it would move slightly when touched, but now it doesn’t move at all.
It is still firm, not soft or leaking, but I’ve started noticing a strange rotten smell coming from it.
I attached photos of its current condition.
Is this normal near eclosion, or does it look like the pupa has died? Has anyone experienced something similar?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
