Any advice for international masters students?

Hei!

I'm moving to Bergen this august to study a masters at UiB.

This is my first time being an international student and moving countries. I'm really excited but also quite nervous!

I have a few questions about life as an international student in Bergen.

  1. Are student societies welcoming to English speakers? I'm a keen mountain biker, skier and hiker, I love being in the outdoors and would like to join student societies for this!

  2. Where are the best places to shop for basic essentials like pots and pans, food etc near Grønneviksøren Studentboliger?

  3. How does the university Welcome Week work? Are there fairs for the student societies and that kind of thing?

  4. How is the clubbing / music scene in Bergen? What kind of music is most popular and are the clubs any good??

I'd greatly appreciate any more advice anyone has!

Thank you!

Parking for one month

Hi,

I am moving to Bergen this summer and my friend is coming to visit for the first month with her danish car. We will mostly use to go hiking so will probably only use it a few times and don't mind parking in fyllingsdalen or melkeplassen. How realistic is that? I also don't mind paying a monthly subscription but without bankID it seems there are not that many long-term options.

Signing Sammen Offer and then canceling/ refusing to move in?

Hello,

I'm from France, and I'm going to do an exchange for 5 month at Bergen beginning in August. I received an offer from Sammen housing for a shared room (not a room with shared living space). I have till today to accept, but I really don't wanna be living with another student in my room. I know however that the housing market is very tense rn in Bergen, and I'm kinda scared to not get a place in a kollektiv for July-August as I am a foreigner (max budget 8000 kr).

My question is as follows: If I accept Sammen's offer, but I later cancel it/refuse to pay if I find a flat, what are the risks?

PS: | don't ask that out of comfort only, I suffer from severe sleep apnea and I need a machine to breathe during the night. It makes some noise and I don't want to inflict that onto a roommate. Already ask Sammen but they don’t care.

Uni Accommodation Sammen

Hello, overseas student coming to study in Bergen. I told them clearly what my budget is etc (I'm a mature student so I have 'grown up' bills) and they offered me an apt almost twice my budget nowhere near the Uni. Seriously. WTF?

Working in Norway with minimal language skills?

I'm currently learning Norwegian (it's going very slowly) but I'm looking to move to Norway for my partner. Does anyone know if it would be possible to work or any jobs where only speaking English would be acceptable?

He could support us both but it would be tight

Does anyone know if this spot circled in red is easily accessible on foot before he makes the journey?

Thank you :)

Hvilke aktiviteter? Hvordan bli lett kjent med Bergensere?

Setter pris på alle tips😁

Samen Couple Housing

Me and my girlfriend both got accepted to a Master at NHH, therefore we applied for housing at Sammen and listed our names as cohabitants vice versa, as was told us by the Sammen customer support. We both received an offer for individual apartments, which we are obviously very thankful for considering the tight Norwegian housing market.

However, both apartments seem fit to live there as a couple. So my question is, would Sammen mind if we just reject one offer and live together in the other apartment. In doing so we would take less of the limited student housing off the market, which should be very much in the interest of Sammen.

Voss - Bergen fastpacking advice

Hei norske venner

Writing the rest in English to make the post more searchable.

We are two friends from Denmark that are planning on running/fastpacking from Voss to Bergen across three days in early June. We have both run mountain races and ultras at distances 60 - 80 km., so we feel fairly confident about managing the elevation and distances, but would appreciate some local insights on how best to prepare.

The itinerary in short is:
- Day 1: Early arrival in Bergen, drop bag at hotel in downtown, catch train to Voss, and run approx. 22 km. to Torfinnsheim. We know it is unstaffed, so we will be sure to bring food for the first night.
- Day 2: Approx. 41 km. from Torfinnsheim to Høgabu via Breidablik
- Day 3: Brutal day with 58 from Høgabu to Arna Station, train to Bergen, and lodge at hotel.

Now, for our questions:

  1. Does this seem feasible at all, or are there slides, rivers or other geographic challenges we should be aware of?
  2. We will bring freeze-dried food for Torfinnsheim and gels to consume throughout trip, but also expect to stock quick snacks/chocolate and solid lunch at the huts. Is this realistic or are there also customary limits on how much people stock up that we need to be aware of?
  3. We will be sure to bring layers of wool cloth and rain gear. We will also bring essential first aid and survival bag as well as an inReach. However, we are back and forth on whether to bring a tarp, and whether there is other essential equipment you recommend for the backcountry? We obviously want to keep weight down, but also want to be prepared for adverse weather.

Really appreciate all your input and help. Thanks in advance

Gratis kollektivtransport?

For 50kr for en sone (f.eks. A til A) frister lite å betale per tur.

Bergen Transpo

Got a housing offer at Alrek Studentbolig, even though it wasn’t in my top 3 choices on the application. Kinda weird.

I was really hoping to live at Fantoft. But anyway, does the monthly Bybanen pass also include buses going to HVL and the city center? Looks like bus is the best option if I live in Alrek.

Is it a great housing? I wanna hear if you have any experience there.
