Eva Thomas should have died during the tornado event.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting this because I dislike Eva. I may not be a full-fledged Eva stan, but in the war between Eva and Katherine, I would support Eva six days out of seven, despite her occasionally questionable actions. Where Eva at least arcs towards decency and attempts to be a better person than her mother made her, Katherine, despite the writers' best efforts to rehabilitate her, was introduced as a detestably classist and elitist character whose only redeemable qualities were situated in her socioeconomic status. Katherine gained fans, imho, through projection. Sure, she’s elitist, they’ll say, but she’s fiercely protective of her family, and they were wronged—not by the father who had the affair—but by the other woman and her “spawn”, who clearly came into the world for only one reason: to destroy the pristine life and family of the esteemed Saint Katherine Marie Richardson [eye roll]. And boy, her followers will also swear, she sure can dress and throw some fierce shade [double eye roll].

Suffice to say, I don’t care how fashionable, loyal, or aggrieved Katherine is, she and her elitism have never been and will never be my cup of tea.

In the early days of the show, I was shocked that the show would attempt to position such a cruel character as something remotely close to a protagonist. Such was my inexperience with daytime soaps. Consequently, I engaged in a few back-and-forths with Katherine’s soldiers before quickly realizing the futility of that struggle. I walked away from the War of Eva and Katherine a long time ago, but the show hasn’t.

The writers clearly want Eva and Katherine to bicker and snipe and steal each other's men until the heat death of the sun, as evidenced by round 283 of their sniping in the October 6 episode. I get it. The rivalry is money. Stans will fight forever over which of the half-sisters is most right, most wrong, and most victimized. That, as I’ve learned, is the stuff soaps are made of, so while I begrudge them for rehashing a story that is long past tiring, I understand what they’re doing. I don’t like it. I would prefer to see each character grow, follow their own paths, and either learn to be family or just remain estranged. But, this is a soap. If that happens, it would only be for a moment. So, despite my preference, I know this war won’t end, but I so wish it would. And, the best way to have ended it would have been for Eva to die from her injuries in the tornado.

At least then, Eva could die as a redeemed hero, and the writers would be granted rich storylines such as Leslie, Katherine, Ted, and the Duprees (especially ones like Dani and Anita who tried to bully Eva early on) would have to deal with the guilt, regret, and the fallout of the interloper saving the miracle baby. That story would have legs for years, and it would free Ambyr Michele, whose talent is notable amongst the younger cast, to be free to pursue roles that challenge her more than BTG probably ever would. But doing that would have been too much like right.

Not only would Eva's death create more interesting stories and free up a talented actress, but Katherine, a character best suited for the silly melodramas of Fairmont Crest, would remain on the show to torment some other poor person from “the wrong side of the tracks” while rocking her “amazing” fashions and slinging her “witty” shade. Her soldiers would be thrilled, especially since they would have a carousel of opponents for Katherine's childish slings and arrows. Tomas one week. Hayley, the next week. Chelsea the week after that, and on and on and on. The soldiers of Saint Katherine could worship Katherine without the worry of a strong, consistent opposition. All that would lay before them would be a rotating cast of opponents for Katherine that would feed Katherine and her soldiers' bloodlust. IRL, eventually Colby Nixon would realize that she and her character are trapped in a version of hell of the writer's making, but she'll be fine as long as the checks cash. For Eva, Ambyr, and the rest of us, there would be something else. Something fleeting, but better. There would be no war with Katherine's soldiers. Eva would be free. Ambyr would be free. All of us, on both sides, would be free of this nonsense. If only just for a moment.
