Card Cascade for Innovation Ultimate now available!
Card Cascade is a stackable storage-and-play system that makes it much easier to set up, play and pack away the game, now adapted for Innovation Ultimate. The designs are my own and are entirely free for you to download and print for your own use.
This is why it really helps with the game:
- The base game and every expansion are instantly available with little setup
- The vertical cascade effect uses the lid as the base and reduces table space to play
- Ages are laid out sequentially across 3 or 4 boxes, with room for achievements as well
- Each expansion is marked with a removable topper that helps keep focus during play
- The boxes provide compact, secure and stackable storage when not playing the game
- There are separate designs for sleeved and unsleeved cards
- There is room for the reference cards and player mats at the back of each box
- A single box holds all the cards for either 3 or 4 ages, so you'll need 3 or 4 boxes to hold 11 ages plus misc achievements etc in the 12th slot
- Printing requires no supports and the design fits on most printers. The design for 4 ages, sleeved cards, requires a big printer.
How it works
Each Cascade is a box that contains sliding card holders and is closed with a lid. Each cards slot can hold up to 15 cards, and a single Cascade has 4x5 card slots.
To play, remove the lid and insert the removable pushers from the back into the keyed slots. Then, put the box on top of the upside-down lid, so the pushers lift each row of card holders into a stepped cascade via the hole in the bottom of the box.
Next, remove the toppers that protect the expansions only for those expansions you want to play with, and leave the others in place. This mechanism means you won't put a card in the wrong slot by accident.
When you’re finished playing, put the toppers back on the expansions, lift the box out of the lid, store the pushers in their dedicated compartment at the back of the box, and slide the lid back over the top. The cards are now held securely with little wasted space.
Box Labels
Each box has room for a slide-in label in front and on the side. The front label is the same size for all boxes, and the side labels come in a few standard sizes. The label width in mm is part of the standardised box “model number”.
Storage space
If you print 3 Cascades with 4 ages in each, the volume it needs is comparable to the full Innovation Ultimate box: The Sleeved version is 18% larger, and the Unsleeved version is similarly smaller in size than the original box.
The Cascades won't fit in the original box in either configuration though.
Where can I get this?
Download all of the print files for free on Makerworld. This also includes detailed instructions on what to print, how to set it up, etc.
If you like it, please like, rate and boost the model so others can more easily find it!
Card Cascade for other games
Card Cascade was originally designed for Dominion, but I am slowly expanding the list. In addition to Innovation Ultimate, these are the games currently supported:
The Card Cascade model numbering system
Each Cascade has a unique model designation like M5·15·10·45·Sl, to make sure it's possible to refer to each design in an unambiguous way. This is what it means:
- M = Medium width, i.e. 3 horizontal card slots. Small is 4, Large is 5.
- 5 = Five sliding card holders, one for each expansion.
- 15 = Capacity of each static front pocket, where you store the base cards
- 10 = Capacity of each holder slot, always 15 for Innovation
- 45 = Width of the side label in mm.
- Sl = Sleeved cards (Un = Unsleeved)
The same designation is used consistently throughout the system so that boxes, lids, pushers, holders and accessories can always be matched correctly, including between different games.
Does this work with other versions of Innovation?
I have tried it with the Asmadi version, and the card sizes are the same so it works just fine. Post your own experience below!
Will there be changes and updates?
Nothing is currently planned, but if you have a good idea I'm open to it :) What do you think could be better?
The one thing I might do is publish versions with room for fewer expansions. Would that be useful?
I look forward to your comments :)
