my sweet sweet 10,5 year old boy Leo,
Right now, he’s fighting through recovery after having a toe amputated because of a tumor. Please keep my beloved companion in your prayers.
Suspected osteosarcoma in our 5.8-year-old girl Bullmastiff Emma. Looking for support and advice!
Hi everyone,
Two weeks ago, our Emma, a 5.8-year-old Bullmastiff living with us in Valencia, Spain, started limping. At first, we thought it might be because she had jumped out of the car and maybe sprained or injured her front leg.
Our vet prescribed pain medication, and it seemed to help temporarily – she would stop limping for a while. But yesterday, during a visit with a traumatologist/orthopedic vet, they did an X-ray and told us there are changes in the bone. He suspects osteosarcoma.
We are in shock.
This week, Emma is scheduled for a CT scan, and we are still hoping with all our hearts that it is not cancer. But if it is oncology, we are hoping there are no metastases and that we can manage it with front leg amputation and chemotherapy.
Has anyone here gone through something similar with their dog, especially a large breed dog or a front leg amputation?
We would really appreciate hearing about your experience: how your dog handled the diagnosis, treatment, amputation, recovery, chemotherapy, quality of life, and anything you wish you had known earlier.
We are looking for support and advice because we feel completely overwhelmed right now. Emma is so much more than “just a dog” to us. She is our best friend and a true member of our family. It breaks our hearts to think about what she may have to go through, and we are devastated that she might not get the 10 years of dog life we always hoped she would have.
Thank you to anyone who can share their story or advice.
What next
This post is a bit sensitive.
My partner has a 1.8 year old Bull Mastiff. Hes not yet neutered and we are waiting for him to hit the 2 year mark.
We had a friend's dog stay with us last night due to an emergency. This is a tiny doodle style dog (think 20lbs at best compared to the 150 lbs mastiff)
We did a meet and great and everything went great. Our BullMastiff was curious as the smaller one was also not fixed at 6 years old. We knew the initial introduction can be tense so we prepped really well.
They dropped him last night and left. The dogs settled fine and slept in the same room with zero interference or correction.
Today afternoon, the smaller dog hopped onto our couch and started barking (possibly play barking and scratching at my partner). Our boy came running and grabbed the smaller dog by the neck with little to no warning. It was over within seconds. My partner was shocked and immediately rushed the dog to the emergency. The mastiff has no history of biting. The little dog was extremely humpy and loud from the get go.
Where do we go from here?. Our vet who is very familiar with the dog mentioned this as a "fluke". He is very well trained but we believe he perceived it as a threat to his mother. He is very protective of his mom as they have gone through abuse from an ex partner.
Flynn's first photo
This was taken on the way home when his only issue was being a weirdo.
My beautiful foster Ruby
Just wanted to share a photo of my sweet bullmastiff x, Ruby. I’m starting to think she might be a foster fail 😅
She was listed by the pound as a bullmastiff mix. No idea what she is mixed with, but I’ve been researching the breed a lot as it’s my first experience with a bullmastiff and the personality traits are spot on. She’s 1.5 years old and the sweetest girl I’ve met. But if anyone has any advice on dealing with the mastiff stubbornness please let me know! I ask her to do something and she totally understands, but if she’s comfortable and doesn’t have any interested, you best believe she’s going to respectfully decline 😂 after years of having high energy dogs, that just want to please this is a bit of a shock but her calmness is the most beautiful trade off. She’s just a totally unbothered couch potato.
Overweight Bullmastiff. Need help!
Hey everybody,
My storm is currently 3 and she is heavily overweight. The vet said about a year ago that she was around 180-185 which is already an alarming number. She has definitely gained weight from that point also. I would like to walk her longer to get her weight down but I am afraid of her joins becoming weakened. I am currently feeding her 1.5 cups in the morning and the night (3 cups total). I think the falloff is with the treats though. She gets around 3-5 of the large milk bones a day. She also is getting some peanut butter in the morning and night that we stick to her milk bones for her seizure medication. Any advice please? I would like her to be around 150 at least. Thank you!

Flynn’s neck, his back…
As you can see, Flynn’s allergic reaction has settled down enough for the fur to be almost completely restored. His left eye still goops up occasionally for a day or two but we have ointment for that. His ears look good too! I believe we’re in the clear for this outbreak…
