looking at property in cairns but i live in brisbane

thinking about buying an investment place in cairns but i've only been there once like 5 years ago. not sure if i'm being stupid or if it's actually a good idea. looking at prices online and some stuff looks pretty affordable compared to brisbane. but i don't know the areas at all. like which suburbs are decent and which ones to avoid.

my uncle used to live in edge hill and he said it was nice but that was ages ago not sure if it's still the same.

anyone here bought in cairns without living there? how'd you go with inspections and stuff? did you get a buyer's agent or just do it yourself?

Partner doesn’t want to live there because we own dogs

I really want to move, we live in Melbourne and it’s a shit hole. I’m from the Sunshine Coast and miss QLD a lot. We frequently visit cairns/port Douglas for holidays and I’m keen to move up there early next year.

My partner is SO NEGATIVE about it and in particular about our dogs. Saying they’ll never be allowed off lead or to swim in the beach etc.

I know there’s more risk and understand absolutely NO river swimming or walking along those banks.

My questions are for people with dogs:

Do you let your dog run free on the beach?
Is it really that restrictive to their lifestyle living up there?
Do you let them off at inland waterfalls where crocs aren’t present?
Are you worried about them constantly when you’re out?

I wanted a locals perspective, we have 2 border collies that love swimming, love running and going wild. They’re both obedient and well trained.

DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER ALEXANDRA MARYANNE GOWING?

I run a public-interest advocacy project called Forgotten FNQ. I am piecing together a clear timeline for a woman who completely vanished from the Cairns region over two decades ago.

https://australianmissingpersonsregister.com/ampr/AlexandraGowing.htm

Her name is Alexandra Mary Anne Gowing!

We have verified the following facts:

1980–1984: Alexandra moved from Brisbane to Cairns FNQ

April 1984: Appointed as a Clerk for the Commonwealth Public Service in the Queensland Regional Office. She worked for the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations (DEIR / CES) in Cairns

She later lived in Yorkeys Knob & had a son, Nigel (who tragically passed away last year without ever getting answers about his mum)

May 29, 2004: Alexandra vanished from Cairns following an eviction from a Yorkeys Knob property in Johnson Street

She was just 49 years old. Her son at the time, only 10 years old

Physical Description:

170cm tall, slim build, brown hair, brown eyes.

Distinct Features: A visible scar above her left eye & a distinct tattoo on the back of her left shoulder of a dove carrying a fig leaf

Did you know her?

Lassu - any one checked it out?

I know... Another annoying question..

I haven't spoken to anyone who has been to see Lassu and I'm keen for actual reviews (not just the google summary)

If you've been, I'd love to hear what you thought. The last few cabaret style shows I've seen have been a little samey samey (but I always admire the talent and skill) and I'd love to find something a little different.

Thank you!

French Bulldogs in Cairns?

Hey guys has anyone ever made the move from Melb- Cairns and own Frenchies? Our boys are both not effected by BOAS and generally do okay in the hot weather. We would obviously be responsible and not walk them unless it’s under a certain temperature and dark out. They would also have access to AC and a dog pool At all times.

Just want other people’s experiences and how their dogs coped? Cairns is our absolute dream place to live but a part of me is stressed that my dogs won’t enjoy it.

Help

16°56'01.06"S 145°51'10.02"E

does anybody have any idea what this is at all? when I was on top of Mt Yarrabah the other day I saw a big cell towers in the distance on an even higher mountain pea. I think this is it? on every single cell tower mapping site this however does not appear so I’m thinking it could be an old decommissioned one?. also this spot doesn’t seem to be at the end of any hike or service road or any named mountain peak. Very curious and would love any help. looking on google earth I can’t see anything that resembles a trail to it

Best GBR day tour from Cairns with a 15-month-old?

Hey everyone! I’m travelling to Cairns in late September with my husband and our 15-month-old baby baby boy and we’re trying to decide between Ocean Freedom, Passions of Paradise and Reef Magic for our Great Barrier Reef day trip. Would love some advice from parents who’ve done these tours recently!

We are interested in beginner scuba diving. And we want to take baby’s pram onboard and looking to know if the boats are big enough to accommodate that? We did boat tours in Thailand previously and they were all mostly speed boats so obviously not big enough.

Baby facilities are important to us, I need good shade on deck, baby changing facilities, somewhere calm and safe for baby to sit and play while my husband does an activity.

Here’s what I’ve found so far:
Reef Magic — goes to Flynn Reef on a large boat with a permanent pontoon. Seems to have the best facilities and helicopter option available from the pontoon. Flynn Reef apparently has brilliant fish diversity including clownfish and blue tang which would be amazing for the baby. The large pontoon also seems like it would give us the most space and facilities as a family.

Ocean Freedom — good reviews generally but I’m struggling to find clear information about their non-swimming options and whether helicopter rides are available directly from their reef location. Which reef locations do they go to? Do they have toilets/baby changing facilities? Has anyone done this one recently?

Passions of Paradise — the sailing catamaran looks good too. However I can’t find clear information about whether they offer helicopter rides from the reef? And what about the reef areas they cover and the baby facilities onboard?

My questions for anyone who’s been recently — especially parents:

Which operator is the most baby and family friendly in terms of on-board facilities?

Has anyone taken a lap infant on the reef helicopter? Was baby okay with the noise and movement?

For non-swimmers, which operator genuinely gives the best reef viewing experience?

Is Flynn Reef (Reef Magic) actually better for fish spotting than the other reef locations?

Any tips for managing a 15-month-old on a full day reef trip? What did you wish you’d brought?

How does the pontoon handle if baby gets unsettled — is there enough space to walk around and settle them?

We’re currently leaning toward Reef Magic because of the pontoon facilities and helicopter option but the others are more affordable and we see only positive reviews.

Been here a week and noticed everywhere on the esplanade to the pier is closed by 23:30. Which seems crazy for a city. What do people do for nightlife around here? Where is everyone?

Is there enough to do in cairns for 5 days without access to a car?

Hi everyone! My friend and I are going to be staying in cairns this upcoming summer, at a hotel in the city/main downtown area. I was wondering if there would be enough to do close by/in reasonable walking or uber distance in order to fill a 5 day itinerary? My friend and I are both under 21 and therefore at the car rental places will be charged extra for insurance etc or just not be allowed to rent cars at all, so we are wondering if it is worth it to go without access to a car? If so, all recommendations would be greatly appreciated :) we are especially interested in great barrier reef tours so it would be great to know if some were avaliable close to the city. Thanks everyone!

Are there taxis for airport to Port Douglas at 11pm?

Too late in the day to get a bus shuttle. I was wondering if at this time there are plenty of taxis at the airport, and willing to take a fare to Port Douglas. I'm assuming this would cost a couple hundred bucks?
