30s [F4M] - looking for something unconventional

Throwaway account for obvious reasons.

Putting this out there mostly to see if it's actually possible 😂

I'm intellectually curious, physically active, and happiest living a quiet, intentional life. I don't smoke, drink or party. Give me a hike, a good problem to solve, or a conversation with depth over a night out any day.

I have my own place, finances, space and life, and I'm looking for someone who has the same.

Someone who's a whole person in their own right, rather than looking to merge into one shared life. No cohabiting, no shared finances, but emotional intimacy, loyalty, adventures, and someone genuinely present in each other's day to day. I'm looking for something deeply committed, just not conventionally structured.

Not interested in sex or kids, which I know narrows the pool to approximately four people in the ACT. 😂

Bonus points for calm under pressure, principled, protective types. Defence or military backgrounds are very welcome. I've got a long-standing connection to that world, so it feels familiar to me.

If any of this sounds oddly specific to your own life too, say hi and tell me something interesting about yourself and what you're building.

Dating Canberra ( men seeking women )

Why is dating so difficult, I’m 26M & I’ve been single since I was 16, I’ve always felt like there’s something wrong with me & that I must be a turn off to women, which is interesting as I tend to look after myself well & I’ve never been called ugly

I’m 26, half Australian & half Croatian ( I look more Croatian then I do Australian but I can barely speak the language which makes me Aussie at heart, I’m a gentle giant, 6ft 2 & relatively fit, I’ve wasted 3yrs in tinder for 2 matches that went nowhere & I don’t want to die alone

I’m self employed however I want to become a police officer & I’m considering the career change it’s just hard having no one there to give me that drive I need, I have my own apartment in Belconnen, I live alone & I need to live a little as I’m a bit of a hermit, I do t get out enough 😅

If any women between 18 & 30 have been looking to meet a genuine guy like myself, please done hesitate & send me a message, I’d love to meet new people & find my happy ever after

here to remind you about my (audio) book club!

helloooooo 🌻

i (28F, not a lonely single dad) host an audiobook club monthly at the book cow in kingston

the idea of it being an audiobook club means that you don't need to read anything before hand, come and listen to a few chapters of Howls Moving Castle from 6pm and bring a craft along to work on while you listen!

it's a rlly nice, low energy, social interaction and a very cosy activity during these chilly winter months.

some things people have brought in the past include crochet, knitting, drawing, colouring, painting, collage, weaving, lino printing, hand sewing, quilting and even some chainmail! as long as it's a semi quiet activity, it's welcome 💞

it's on tomorrow night and we'll be starting at chapter 8 of Howls Moving Castle, here's more info and how to save a seat - it's a free event but we need to keep track of numbers as it's a small space. you're more than welcome to come alone or bring a friend!

because we listen to an audiobook there's also no pressure for social interaction but there is a bit of chatter before and after listening to the book.

if you have any questions feel free to comment or message me here or my insta is on the poster :~)

Social group

Heyhey all, I have a social group discord for ACT and Sydney if anyone is interested in joining. I’m planning one event each month as a main for each SYD and ACT but there are smaller events scattered around (mostly SYD). That being said we are planning a catch up at ramen daddy on the 5th of September (ACT) if anyone is interested. Im new to NSW after a long time in WA so Im learning what there is to do in ACT tbh so if anyone has suggestions im all for it. Please be mindful if you do want to join it’s an anti lurker server. Anyone sitting around without talking or contributing for over a month will be kicked, I also want to make it clear it is NOT a dating or hook up server so don’t even try. 👍

Dating as a 26M in Canberra

Hi fellas, I am a 26M South Asian guy recently moved to Canberra. How does dating work in Canberra? I reckon dating apps are a waste of time. Are there any other places to meet people? Cheers! 😊

Are there any events or programs out there that could help reduce the fear of Muslims?

Someone in my life just broke my heart by spewing hate against Muslims. I'm not religious, but I do believe in human rights and one's right to preserve their culture, language and religion. I understand all religions have extremists, and they do not reflect the whole... But that is where this person and I apparently disagree. They believe you can't be Muslim without being an extremist.

This person's hate is not okay, but their fears are real to them and come from life events, generational trauma, and recent events, which makes this a delicate situation.

They are Jewish (Ashkenazi and religiously-- not actively, but ike a Christian who doesn't go to church, but was raised in the church and still believes in Jesus), born shortly after the holocaust, and raised by a family of veterans who, as Jews, saw firsthand what happened in the camps.

They also experienced extreme racism/prejudice growing up Jewish in a more antisemitic part of NY. Their family had to change their surname to try to hide the fact they were Jewish over a decade after the war ended... They experienced ongoing anti-Semitism in America by general Americans. Saw swastikas spray painted in parks and burned into the ground with fuel when tensions were low... and then not too long after they moved to Australia, Bondi Beach...which geographically put them closer to a targeted attack against Jews than ever before.

All they do is watch the news about the rise in anti-Semitism around the world and especially in Melbourne, listen to fear mongering YouTube videos, etc.

I tried to make them see that the exact words they are saying probably came out of the mouths of Nazis in the 40s, but they said it's different because Jews never used their religion to target Nazis. I tried to explain the media focuses on the extremists, and that the views of extremists do not resonate with the whole, and there are many Muslims who are not antisemitic out there.. but they claimed all Muslims have those same beliefs, and the extremists are the ones not afraid to say it out loud 🤦🏼

Ironically, what I've always admired about this person is their open-mindedness and love of all cultures. My life and career have been devoted to helping people of all cultures and religions, and this person has been a big influence in my life, and the one that has contributed towards my core values and beliefs most, so hearing these remarks is absolutely heartbreaking.

I can't walk away from this person because of our relationship, and because that does nothing to help the situation. They are not a threat to the Muslim population. They would never say these words outside of their home, so they will not actively encourage others to hate or do anything to cause harm to individuals or the Muslim community, but I want to help them work through the generalised fears and begin to heal.

I'm new to Canberra, so I don't know what resources there are out there. I know the only way to overcome prejudice is through open discussion and social connections. As a step 1, I plan to tell them we need remediation with a counsellor to remedy our immediate situation because I need a safe space to express how their words affect me (I've literally been having anxiety attacks since our conversation because it was the most hateful thing I've heard and it came from the last person I would have ever expected to hear it from).

As of right now, they are not in a place where sitting down one-on-one with a Muslim would be beneficial, but I do want to work towards the social connections aspect in a low pressure environment. Are there any events open to the general public that we could go to, blend into the crowd and experience the culture without the pressure to engage directly?

Also, if you have any other resources, like easy to digest videos, texts, etc., I would be open to those as well.

Please do not use this post as a platform to speak negatively about Jews and/or Muslims. This is a serious post, and trolls and/or judgmental comments are not needed.

Looking for New Friends in Canberra: Nature, Off-Roading & Deep Conversations

Hi everyone! I’m 35, male, and recently moved to Canberra. I’ve really been enjoying the landscapes around here and recently got into off-road driving. I’ve just bought my first off-road car and would love to find some people who are keen on beginner-friendly off-road trips and exploring nature together.

I’m mainly free on weekdays, so I’d especially love to meet people who are available during the week.

I’m also interested in meeting people who are different from me and have their own perspectives and experiences. I enjoy deep conversations about philosophy, human psychology, life, and pretty much anything that gets you thinking.

If you enjoy spending time outdoors, exploring new places, having good conversations, or simply making new friends, feel free to message me. No need to be experienced with off-roading. I’m a beginner too!

Would be great to meet some interesting people around Canberra. 🙂

Just trying to put myself out there more (again lol)

Hey everyone I’ve been living in Canberra for the better part of maybe 2 years and I am STRUGGLING to make friends (mainly because of my job (night cleaner))

I have tried everything under the sun to try and make friends but when you live in a introvert city it’s going to be hard (that is what people have told me about Canberra it is not of my own opinion)

I would love to try and make friends with some people, I love to crochet, game, draw, write, go for walks, and cook, I do have a boyfriend who also has a small friend group that I’m not too sure I click with 🫣. Just thought I would give this a try seeing as I have not had much luck elsewhere.

(Ps I’m 21M, I also love shopping🫣😭💀)

Early 30s F | New in Canberra | Looking for genuine friendships & deep conversations

Hi! I’m a woman in my early 30s who recently moved to Canberra this late January and would love to make some genuine friends.

A little about me:

I’m into sociology, psychology, philosophy, literature, and spirituality.

I used to do creative writing but not anymore due to my depression

I like reading, listening to podcasts and guided meditation.
I also do yoga, Pilates, and long walks in nature.

I’ve lived in Europe for around 3 years, have been in Australia for about 1.5 years, and grew up in East Asia.

I enjoy exploring new places, trying new experiences, and wearing cute dresses because fashion makes me happy.

I’m… reluctantly learning to enjoy cooking. 😅
Cooking is my forced hobby now because I can’t afford to go to restaurants.

I don’t know if I can count therapy as my hobby but why not ?

Bookstores, libraries, museums, art galleries, theatres, and even cute little gift shops are my happy places.

I absolutely love deep conversations about life, people, ideas, and everything in between.

I’m also a fan of medieval fantasy, especially Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.

I think I have a strong sense of social justice and I am thinking going to law school in the future.

Some things I’m not really into:
❌Nightclubs or raves
❌Watching or playing sports
❌Video games (including mobile games)
❌alcohol
I know those are pretty common interests, so I realise my social circle might end up being a bit smaller.

That said, I do enjoy live music, concerts, stand-up comedy, opera and musicals. When I lived in London, I watched quite a few musicals and operas, and while traveling in Spain I fell in love with flamenco performances.

I know my interests are a little niche, but I’m hoping there are some like-minded people out there.

One last thing: I am kinda broque 😎 so I can’t really go to a coffee shop with you ( I don’t drink coffee) but I might consider going to a boba tea shop occasionally 🧋

p.s. I also don’t have a car

If you think we’d get along, feel free to send me a message.

I will try my best to reply.

Thank you 😊

Launching Physical AI Meetup in Canberra next Thursday (Aug 13th) – Inaugural Event!

Hey r/Canberra,

We’ve been running regular not for profit Physical AI (robotics, embodied AI, smart hardware) meetups in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Perth and we’re finally bringing it to Canberra!

Because of a change in location and tight schedule, we had to put this event together on short notice, but we wanted to make sure Canberra’s tech, engineering, and research community got its own dedicated space to connect.

Whether you’re working with hardware/robotics, studying AI at ANU/UC, doing research at CSIRO Data61, or just curious about where artificial intelligence meets the physical world, you’re very welcome to drop by. It’s casual, focused on good conversations, and a great way to meet others working in the space locally. Pizzas are FREE but limited seats.

Event Details:

When: Thursday, August 13th

Where: Black VC 4 Mort Street #Level 3 Canberra, ACT 2601

Time: 530pm to 8pm

Cost: Free

Since this is our very first ACT event, we'd love to see a solid local crowd turn out.

You can RSVP and grab details here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/physical-ai-meetup-canberra-tickets-1996587520019?aff=oddtdtcreator

Hope to see a few of you there! Feel free to ask any questions in the comments.
