Devis club beads! Hand carved and harvested myself with no power tools

Iv been making a lot of beads by hand out of devils club. I made these 8 necklaces for my tribe as gifts and the last picture is all my leftover beads that didn’t match good enough.
Iv probably carved 500 over the past year now hehe
I tried making some of them look like Pacific Northwest trade beads

how can i get my wood to stop chipping

my gouges are sharp, i’m thinking the wood is maybe too dry. but i’d prefer to not scrap the project completely, all of the planks are doing it tho

hair pin

Dragon Priest Hair Pin.

This was definitely one of the more challenging little projects I've worked on.

Only 9 inches long, but because of the delicate details and thin sections, it was tricky to carve without cracking the wood.

It was a lot of fun to make, and I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Would you wear a Dragon Priest Hair Pin like this?

Sculpted from wax and casted here in the studio!

Client wanted a large pendant, only had enough gold for Text and a bale. I think I made it work though!
Sand casted here in the studio and the porosity is fine because he leads people on river/ lake excursions for a living!
Stones were repurposed from his grandmothers heirloom ring. Blue Sapphire.

Maple Dragon. Demon? Imp? 😂

Tung oil vs a water based urethane. Both maple, same tree as a matter of fact. Tung oil hands down.

Bigfoot

I made a Bigfoot caricature, followed a carver on YouTube— the wood blank they used was 5” tall, but I only have 4” pieces at the moment, so I had to work around that….. I think it turned out pretty well. I’m happy with him! My next step is to stain his fur and paint his teeth.

How to stain a carving

I'm getting near the point of finishing this sculpture. I want to stain it or something to make it look like the second image (which is AI, by the way). That really scares me. It's such a small, intricate thing to stain. Does anyone have advice on how to apply the stain evenly and what products to use? Do I use a paint brush? Wood conditioner?

The only thing I ever stained was cabinets, and that was borderline impossible without wood conditioner.
