Census has been weaponized in the past

Historical Canadian census records were used by the federal government and Indian agents as tools to identify, locate, and track Indigenous children to enforce compulsory attendance at residential schools.

Census records were actively weaponized against Japanese populations during World War II. For decades, government agencies denied any involvement, but historical and statistical research eventually proved that census data was directly used by both the United States and Canadian governments to facilitate the forced uprooting and mass incarceration of people of Japanese descent.

Census data and demographic records were heavily weaponized against Jewish people, most notoriously in Nazi Germany and occupied Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.

Historically, the relationship between the census and military conscription is deeply intertwined. In fact, the very origin of population counting in many ancient civilizations was not for statistical curiosity or resource distribution, but for two specific state mechanisms: taxation and conscription.

Etc.

So don't be too judgmental about people who ignore the census.

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

If a person owns two houses — one rural, one urban — how does Census 2027 handle both phases?

If a person owns two houses, one in a rural area and one in an urban area, how does Census 2027 handle this?

Phase 1 — House Listing (April–September 2026): Are both houses listed separately by their local enumerators automatically, or does the owner need to do something? If the second house is not permanently occupied, how is it recorded?

Phase 2 — Population Enumeration (February 2027): Is the person counted at both houses or only at their "usual place of residence"? If different family members permanently live in the two houses, is each person counted where they actually reside?

Anyone have clarity or an official source?

CENSUS - Query

"Yes, in Canada, individual census records containing full names, personal identities, and detailed personal information are released to the public 92 years after the census is taken. These records are transferred from Statistics Canada to Library and Archives Canada (LAC) for public access. [1, 2, 3]"

I keep reading the census data is anonymized, but clearly they are keeping the data tied to one's personal identity for many decades to come.

How do you feel about that?

Also, if the census is about providing alleged services for various communities, why not merely ask the residents to full out a quick survey expressing their desires about which services they would most like to see and/or see improved? Profiling residents with all kinds of invasive questions doesn't seem the right way to go about it.

The Census--what was the length for you?

Just like everyone else we got the letter in the mail and filled it out online. Normally I've done it for our family but this year my husband did it for us and helped his parents complete theirs.

Through convo with his cousins he realized ours only took like 5 mins and so did his parent's and he was able to submit and get a confirmation code and everything. His cousins' ones took over an hour and and detailed questions about the length of their commute to work and other things.

From my own past experience census has always taken me close to an hour or more and there has always been a lot of questions.

My husband is thoroughly confused, he's pretty confident he only got very basic questions like how many people in the household etc., I feel like he likely somehow skipped everything but he's pretty adamant that's not possible. Was anyone else's this short?

If not we're going to try to look into what went wrong and what the error could be.

Guide me with Census please.

Hey guys, this is my first time hearing about Census and I heard that we all are supposed to do it. I didn't receive any mailed paper for the questionnaire so I'm not sure how to do it.

I am a pgwp holder, am I still counted? If so please guide me on how I can access the questionnaire. Thank you.
