Any point in reporting a fireworks throwing truck to PPB? Unable to read plate.

Adding context, 5/20 ~7:00 PM. Truck drives all the way around the circle and doesn't stop. I started off from the top behind them. Before getting to the stop sign at Council Crest road they threw what I assumed to be litter but then I realized it was sparking, some bottle rockets I guess.

Gray early 2000s pickup, I think Tacoma, with damaged front left corner panel in a darker color or black. Green utility trailer with wheelbarrow. Which is basically every sketchy contractor vehicle in the county.

Just my first truly terrible driver in a while. Which reflecting on it still means Portland is so much better than other cities when it comes to being willfully messed with as a cyclist.

Bike Stolen - Yellow Crust Frame

Hey y’all, someone walked off with my bike last night, took it from inside my work building near the intersection of NW 24th and NW Wilson. I don’t have the serial number recorded anywhere (which is the last time I’m making that mistake lol), but the bike/frame is quite distinctive, and I did have my u-lock on the back wheel.

It’s a Crust Derecho frame, yellow with pink details, size L, with 29” wheels and drop bars with blue tape. It has a couple distinctive decals on it from the previous owner too.

If someone sees it on the street or for sale or whatever, I’d really appreciate if you’d let me know. Thank you!!

What do most cyclists in Portland actually use to track rides?

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a cycling app focused more on gamification, territory control, rankings and daily riding motivation instead of pure fitness tracking. Right now it’s Android only, and I’m trying to better understand how cyclists in the US actually track and experience their rides before pushing the project further.

I’m curious what people here in Portland really use day to day. Are most riders on iPhone or Android? Do people mostly track rides directly from their phones or are bike computers basically the norm now? I see a lot of Garmin and Wahoo online, but I’m not sure how common they actually are among commuters and casual riders versus more serious road cyclists.

Also wondering how important things like navigation, battery life, sensor support and Strava integration really are in practice. Would people ever use a more “game-like” cycling app during normal rides, or do most riders mainly care about clean stats and route tracking?

Trying to learn from real cyclists instead of just relying on app store data and cycling channels.

Do NOT buy your children e bikes!

I was biking today, and I watch a group of three boys, most likely between the ages of 12 and 13, riding on e motorcycles. I see them accelerate and nearly miss a car at a round about. They then swerve into oncoming traffic then turn left into the pavilion parking lot. According to Orego law, class 1 e bikes are the ONLY e bikes legal for people aged 14 an up with class 2 and 3 being available for those 16 and up. If your vehicle goes above 28mph, then it is classified as illegal without registration, lights, turn signals, mirrors, and a driver with a valid motorcycle license.

E bikes are 13-15x more likely to end in fatality or death for the user than cars and remain an extreme safety hazard.

Your child can play outside without a need for a vehicle capable of going 65 miles an hour.

Cycling around Portland

Hey guys I lived in Portland back around 2010 and used to handcycle the spring water, through town to Marine dr/40 mile loop, and to tabor mtn. I’m going to be visiting soon and wanted to ask about trail conditions and safety. I can’t walk so I don’t want to get in a bad spot.

Thanks for your responses and reports on advance.

Bike Route app?

Google Maps give me awful bike directions. What are people using to make routes that are reliably not going to put you in the morning traffic ?

Can anyone confirm that the Historic highway has reopened?

I can see a press release from ODOT showing it’s reopened, but google maps still shows it is closed.

Anyone know?

Used Tern HSD?

I have been wanting an e-cargo bike for the past year to serve as a car replacement (my partner and I share one car). I have become obsessed with Tern HSD for its compactness and ability to haul an adult passenger. Since wanting one, I see them everywhere in Portland now!

Then Gen 2, released in 2023, is the version that can carry an adult passenger with a rear rack capacity of close to 180 lbs. Do you think it is realistic to wait and have one pop-up used within the next handful of months? Or should I just shell out the 5-6k!?

I have seen some pop up in FB Seattle but not much in Portland :(

starting first frameset-up fixed gear build, need recommendations for reasonably priced components.

i've got my urban beater frameset (state 4130) ordered, & i'm looking for some advice before i get started. this bike will see a little bit of everything- commuting, long-ish road rides & hopefully some gravel. folks, what affordable parts should i throw at this thing? any input is appreciated!

specifics- typically i prefer risers for bars, straps for foot retention, & relatively shallow wheels over super deep dishes.

thanks for reading, ride safe! -pepper

Best Way to get from Southwest area to the Central Eastside and back?

I am near Multnomah Village and getting to downtown is an easy 20 minutes. But getting to the eastside is tough. I did a ride yesterday and getting to Tillikum was not a problem, maybe 25 minutes. Getting back was a nightmare. Maps took me through the riverfront trail, limited to 10 mph and tons of pedestrians. That ride up the hill was horrible as well. Took me about 45-50 minutes just to get back.

I tend to hang around Ladds a lot if it helps. First thought is just do Hawthorne bridge both ways then barbur but wanted to see if there are any other suggestions.

Over night trip suggestions from your doorstep

Hey fam, I’m wondering what some of your favorite bike touring/packing routes are that you can do from home here in Portland, or at least with a relatively short drive.

I’ve got a 2 year old and a 4 month old, and recently picked up a bakfiets style bike to haul them around in. 2 yo loves longer rides already and we get 20 miles in easily on the regular in an hour and a half or two. I have no doubt we could manage a 40-60 mile day with some breaks for her to get some wiggles out. I would love to start planning some over night bike trips for the family here and there where we could either camp or stay at an airBnB/hotel at the end. I could probably borrow a family members van to transport our bikes to the start as well - I am in Milwaukie and would probably do so for Banks-Vernonia. In bachelor times past I’ve biked to Estacada campground with some friends and had a great time, but stretches of that route I certainly would not feel very comfortable taking my kids in the bike.

Any favorites for any of you out there that might fit the bill?

Why, yes, Leif Erikson was indeed muddy this morning.

Still a fun ride, despite accidentally taking Saltzmann to return to my car, which was parked at…Thurman. And I may or may not have realized this until I reached the Saltzmann gate. In hindsight, I should have known something was amiss when I didn’t see any bikes coming up the other way. Still a fun downhill ride, at least. As the nice hikers I passed on the way down said when they saw me heading back up, “You must really be a masochist!”

Portland Area Gravel Group Rides?

Hey, I grew up in Portland but I am coming back to visit my family for a few weeks and I keep a gravel bike at their place. I live in the dmv now, and cycling is pretty big there and they have a ton of variety in terms of faster more advanced group rides, is there anything similar in Portland as far as faster or long day gravel rides that I should look at while I am back in Portland (late may early June)? I never really got too familiar with Portland cycling scene while I lived here, I know there's a bunch of bike shops that host beginner rides but thats not really what I am looking for.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the 2026 Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder (5 day stage race) July 8th-12th, so I’m looking to transfer my registration to someone who can use it.

The event transfer process is done directly through BikeReg and is very straightforward.

If anyone is interested, send me a DM and I can share more details.

People using wrong hand signals

It is so rare to see people using correct hand signals. Often times they have allllll the gear on so they’re clearly a very serious cyclist. Are there different rules that I’m not aware of? It’s a big pet peeve but also dangerous when folks are communicating the wrong thing. Thoughts??? If I’m alone on this pet peeve I will actively work on being less annoyed.
