What Order to Get Content

Pretty much decided to get the game and I imagine I will end up with all of it over the next year or two. My question is what order to buy the different elements?

Particularly what do I want to have from the very beginning and what can be used later (I can't afford to just buy it all now).

Also, if you sleeve are these cards standard size (I play Marvel Champions, I have sleeves that size)?

Community Podcasts?

Just bought the game and what really got me going with LotR LCG and Arkham Horror LCG were community podcastrs. I loved going back to early episodes discussing the game when it was released, even if I joined late.

Are there any community podcasts for EBR? Because I could not find any, just the official one, which is a very different style. I'd love to have some discussions about ranger cards, locations, quests, enemies, weather, expansions ... Is there something like this?

Replacing the main story with valley expansions

I would like to have some feedback if my plans for how to incorporate the expansions is a good idea or not:

We are currently finishing the last side missions of the base game and are just now incorporating the Moment mini-expansions. We have the LotA campaign and I have ordered the currently 2 Valley expansions as well.

My plan is this:

  1. We finish all sidequests and then proceed to LotA.
  2. Wait until the 4 valley expansions drop.
  3. Restart the campaign with all valley expansions with new decks without any unlocks BUT removing the main story.

The other option would be to play the 2 valley expansions now before LotA but then we don't get to play new characters and I do not think I want to play the whole game again after that idk

Campaign - Journey to Biological Station - day10 - Looking for encouragement to keep going

I love this game so much. When I don’t play I think about playing it or about the world. When I should be working I’m constructing decks for future rangers on the internet. When I get off work - I start playing.

But here is my problem, I suck at it.

I’ve started my first campaign and it was going so poorly that I decided to restart. So I lovingly constructed a new, in my mind, better, deck and even wrote a whole backstory for my character - super embarrassing stuff. And off we went.

At first It was going great, dealing with path cards actually became enjoyable and even combos started showing up and then boom, the same mission quests failed again. I was hurrying to Tumbledown so much that I didn't manage to get three samples of Reclaimers for Secret Invasion and then didn’t even get to Tumbledown on time to finish Deeper Motives! Now I am dragging my sorry ass back to Biological Station in shame, just like in my first campaign.

Did I fuck the game for myself not completing these two missions? Is there a softlock somewhere or awful consequences aplenty? I’m on day 10 so there should be 2 / 3 of the game ahead of me. Even in my deep shame I still want to play more. Even if I never become… a true Ranger

Missing Aspect Cards

I just bought the game and when I opened it I found out that the Aspect Cards are 9 and the rule book says hey are 12. How can I see which ones are missing?

Hope anyone can help me.

Prologue round 1: Traverse only or full/normal round?

In the prologue to Lure of the Valley, when playing the first round ("Your goal this round is to travel from Ancestor’s Grove to Boulder Field." …"On the Common Tests card, you’ll find the Traverse test. During this round, you can use this test..."), is the intention that the rangers are only supposed to use the Traverse test, leaving other tests aside for the time being (e.g., round 2 similarly emphasizes the Connect test), or is it to play a full/normal round, where traveling to the Boulder Field is the main goal to work towards? (e.g., potentially connecting with a Sitka Doe to clear it in order to avoid fatigue before traversing?).

I realize in asking that many players would suggest just skipping the Prologue and starting with Day 1, but since we're a group who's not very experienced with EBR-style games, I like the incremental deck-building and role-playing elements of the Prologue. It's just not particularly clear to me how focused on a single action vs. general these initial rounds were intended to be.

I also realize that the stakes in the Prologue are non-existent and that we could probably choose to play it either way. Again, just curious what the designers' intentions were, or how others have interpreted these initial rounds.

Thanks!

Custom token craft project

I thought I would share pictures of some custom tokens I made for myself after finding nothing on Etsy suited me quite right. I had played Netrunner for many years with some very nice "penny gem" tokens (more recently called burger tokens) and I was looking for some similar luxury tokens for my Earthborne Rangers that I could have ready for when I launch into Legacy of the Ancestors. In particular I wanted tokens that were stackable and flippable (to track spent energy), that were around 16-20mm to fit several on a card, and to suit the game's theme would ideally be of somewhat eco-friendly materials rather than acrylic or 3D-printed plastic.

I ultimately didn't find anything I liked on etsy or ebay but I did find excellent reddit posts about custom tokens that had been made for Arkham Horror with fairly detailed instructions, and so I realised that with some time and troubleshooting I could follow this approach and make my own ideal tokens.

I decided that I wanted the tokens to have a lower disc-like profile rather than full domes, to allow them to be stacked and flipped. I bought these cabachons and these tray settings, which I thought had a nice, earthier feel than clean silver or gold bases. I took as clear photos as I could of the original EBR tokens and then spent a while on them in GIMP to make each token circular and do a bunch of clean-up such as removing glare and artifacts, sharpening the fine detail and increasing colour saturation.

When the tokens were ready I made print sheets of 18mm images in LibreOffice, printed to pdf and took them to OfficeWorks to print "Actual Size" on 300gsm matte paper. The colours come out far richer than on my home colour laser printer but for some reason they had come out much too dark, so I took the images back into GIMP and increased lightness by about 12 in the Hue-Chroma dialog to make the colours brighter without becoming desaturated.

I never ended up finding an 18mm circular paper punch so I ended up simply cutting the circles out manually with a pair of scissors. This wasn't exact but the results were close enough that it is impossible to see any problems once the images are seated in their tokens. I used Mod Podge Paper to glue a paper circle to a glass cabachon, and then after a while to dry I glue it into the tray setting. I took that moment to paint a thick layer of Mod Podge around the edge of the token, both glass and setting. A big issue I had with the original EBR tokens was finding them hard to pick up off a table and the glass cabachons had the same problem. By applying a layer of glue and letting it dry it ended up creating a sticky friction around the token edge that makes it much easier to pick them up and flip them, while leaving the glass side suitably clear. I had some matte gel medium that I also tested which was even grippier but would fog up the token edges and I didn't like how that looked. After the gluing I wiped the top of the token with a wet paper towel to remove stray glue from the top.

Ultimately I made 100 tokens, as such:

  • 4 ranger tokens
  • 8 of each energy colour (which I think should be sufficient for up to 3 players, though 95% of the time I'm playing solo anyway)
  • 17 Progress tokens (6 "3" tokens and 11 "1" tokens)
  • 15 Harm tokens (5 "3" tokens and 10 "1" tokens)
  • 17 General tokens (6 "3" tokens and 11 "1" tokens)
  • 15 Brown Secondary General tokens (5 "3" tokens and 10 "1" tokens)

I made fewer of the harm and secondary general tokens as in my experience I think fewer are needed and so I could fit them all within 100 this way.

Anyway, this is a project I spent about a week on preparation and image editing and then another half-week putting together and I wanted to show it to the community. It was nice to have a hands-on craft activity that I could slowly make progress on and the resulting tokens look nice and have a nice heft and make satisfying click sounds. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the process I went through.

Can you interact with other cards while your Ranger Token is out?

(Vague spoilers for things we found during the first mission)

I only played my first game, but we had these three situations that interacted with the Ranger Token:

- We put our Ranger Tokens on a ship to convince the crew that they should let us ride it
- We put our Ranger Tokens on an underwater location
- We put a Ranger Token on a beast that had captured one of us

Nothing in the rules says that you cant interact with other things while your Ranger Token is placed somewhere (as far as I understood the rules), but we ended up ruling that you couldn't try to give a cookie to a character while a beast is dragging you through the woods.

We also ruled that we could interact with other things after we convinced the crew, but we argued a bit about the underwater location.
The challenge to get to the underwater location had a chance to hurt you if you failed, so it seemed to represent the actual swimming to the place, but one of the players suggested that "a path was charted to it, and we swim there once all players put their token there".

Is there a clear cut answer to these? It feels a bit loose to have to interpret these situations in fiction to determine if we want to basically limit ourselves to preserve the fantasy where the game gives us no rules to do so, but it also feels bad to play rules as written and go connect with a deer while a beast is actively ensnaring you.

Rule Clairification: Nature’s Abundance

Nature’s Abundance reads ‘When [pow!] is added to a flora in this way, it may not exceed the flora’s [pow!] threshold. I’ve taken this to mean that the card cannot be used if it would clear the flora. This seems to be in the spirit of the card—nature provides all we need, if we take with respect, or something. In this case, if a flora has a threshold of 2, and there is already 1 [pow!] on it, the card cannot be used. But, of course, in this case the the threshold is only equaled, not exceeded.

I’m left to wonder how the card could *ever* exceed a flora’s threshold, since that would mean the threshold had already been equaled, and therefore cleared. Perhaps interactions with other cards may come into play, but I’ve not come across any that would.

I’m fairly comfortable with the rule set at this point, and can navigate the plain reading in most all circumstances. That this card still stumps me has me wondering if I’m missing something.

Can anybody add some clarification?

Spamming fatigue?

My friends and I are just getting into our game and what we stumbled on is that it seems like getting a bunch of fatigue and soothing it is the most efficient way to draw your hand size back up.

Obviously, you run the risk of getting injured and losing all those cards or just running through your deck too quickly. But is there something else we’re missing? Are we playing something wrong?

Pre-constructed decks

Hi all, my friend and I are planning to pick this game up soon and somewhere I saw that it’s best to use the pre-constructed decks to start with.

Had a look at them on the Earthborne website and they look really cool, but I do find myself leaning towards the ‘advanced’ deck. So to ask:

  1. Is there any combination of pre-made decks that should be avoided in a 2 player play through? I.e they don’t sync well together or are just completely suboptimal?

  2. Will a new player be able to use the advanced decks? We’ve both had plenty of experience with card games, both online and board.

Thanks

After Action Report for the First Day

SPOILERS FOR DAY 1 OF THE CAMPAIGN. DON'T READ ON UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET SPOILED.

----

So, I've just finished my very first day of my very first campaign. I'm running the Voice of the Elders precon deck published on EBR's site. I really like the animals and the connecting. However, the precon doesn't give you Riri, which is a sahme. But it doesn't seem to affect the way the deck plays.

Anyways, I had a very lucky first day. Was able to search the path deck with cards for Hy and I ran into the flier early on. So we hopped directly over to White Sky--had to get rid of those darn biscuits. Problem is Oru and I got hungry on the way, so I was only able to give a couple away to White Sky folks.

Wasn't sure where I wanted to go next, but luckily, I ran into the boatkeeper, who was kind enough to ferry me across the lake to Artox Mountain--but not before I got a quest to deal with the Quiet.

Showed up in Artox, befriended the Quiest (thanks Oru & Pokodo), and decided to nope out of there to the Northern Outpost.

Quiet a big day for my first run. I'm sure I got some rules wrong, but I had a blast, and it felt crazy to be able to do so much exploring on the first day.
