Moi University layoffs with debt more than sh 8b?

Moi University is planning a major restructuring, including staff layoffs, as it faces a severe financial crisis with accumulated debt exceeding Sh8 billion and pending bills surpassing Sh10 billion.

Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut told the National Assembly Education Committee that the institution is conducting a workload analysis to identify employees who have not been teaching.

The university has already reduced its permanent staff from over 2,000 to 1,763 and cut 300 casual workers since early last year. The university council chairperson acknowledged the institution is "technically insolvent," according to the Auditor General's report.

The restructuring comes after the Employment and Labour Relations Court blocked a similar layoff plan last year, directing the university to first hold consultations with union leaders.

Life after uni.... What's next?

Hello lovely people.

I just recently finished my undergrad studies and nothing is funny anymore. I've always been a high achieving student, worked on building on professional skills and always forward looking.

I never put much thought to how it would be after I was done. I genuinely thought I'd have landed something before graduating because I've been working toward that goal since my first year.

Most of the prestigious graduate programmes have been closed until next year so there is that. I feel lost and struggling to figure out what my next steps should be.

I'm hoping to hear from those who've been in this position before. What did you do to successfully transition after finishing uni. How did you deal with rejections and what general advice would you give to someone who just finished uni. Did it take longer for you than you expected?

Your advice will be highly appreciated. For context, I was an Econ Stats major and interested in management consulting, strategy and investment opportunities.

Thank you

What's that thing that you learnt about adulting?

One thing I learned from the seasoned professionals I’ve worked with over the years is this: never be quick to make decisions.

Early in my career, I found myself taking on temporary roles where I was often the youngest person on the team. Naturally, duties got delegated down to me, and it sometimes felt like everyone wanted to "use" my energy.

While I'm still searching for that permanent, long-term contract, navigating a tough stretch while watching peers move ahead, those temporary gigs taught me invaluable management lessons.

We all have triggers. For me, nothing is more frustrating than being let down or feeling controlled. But I learned a golden rule: when you are angry, do nothing.

If you are managing people or being pressured to make an immediate call, don't react on impulse. Step back, give it time, and go think about it. You’ll almost always find yourself returning with a much better, more rational decision.

Adulting comes with heavy pressure, bills, the job hunt, the constant temptation to compare yourself to others. But focusing on your own path and celebrating the small wins is crucial. Sometimes, the best decision you can make is simply to focus on yourself.

Mandatory Annual Vehicle Inspection

Looks like owning an asset will be a big time liability. I heard they are contracting pple with 5acres places idle for regions as agents. Unawapea shamba they lease you the machines na watu wa ntsa for the inspections unapata commissions. So they can meet the threshold.

Truth is painful

Bro is mad ju ya ukweli his security had to fight Kebaso. Why do these old people think that they're the custodians of all Parliamentary sits. This reminds of a Luhya politician who goes by the name Waluke, that's another fella. We must end this kind of culture
