Lego frc rebuilt bot

Hey FRC students! I'm in vex, but because of a cousin being in frc I've got big into watching frc and went to the GKC rebuilt tournament this year which was sooo fun. I since have been inspired to make my own frc robot, except out of Lego... I'm using only Lego power functions motors as well. This is my turret prototype and it shoots nerf rival ball darts because they are dense foam balls that are yellow. Basically a mini rebuilt ball.

If anyone had advice for this project, I would love the help. Also, check out my progress videos on Mr. Lizard on yt. Ill mention anyone I get advice from in my vids.

How can I make scouting great (again)?

Hi y'all! So this year, I was elected as my team's strategy and scouting director. For context, my team usually has 2, but this year there is only one and it's me, so that already shows the lack of interest in scouting. This is also the first leadership position I have held in the team.

I've seen that many of my peers somewhat view scouting as more of a chore sometimes. We have been using QR Scout for as long as I have been on the team (3 years). I can give more details if necessary but I would just like to hear from people who are generally interested in scouting/strategy or have held this role before and get a sense of how I can make scouting more interesting or less of an obligation for my team.

Otherwise, if you have any tips for me and my role as director I would appreciate them as well.

CAD debate

I've spent 4 years in FIRST, in my last year I unfortunately had to transfer to a different team which came with its own set of challenges but one in my particular field was how the CAD is organized. Both teams used Onshape however, my old team had all parts in separate files/workspace whereas this newer team had all parts in one file/workspace. This isn't something I thought I would have an issue with but it has become an ongoing debate about which one is better and or professional.

So I'm curious to know what your team does or if your team does something else. I also wanna know if there's any practices you think are strange or I should know going into engineering.

I'd like to also mention that we had to make detailed drawings of every part on my old team which could also be why we had individual part files for everything.

Swerve problem

greetings, everyone!

Even without using the analog stick that controls the robot’s rotation—and even when simply moving sideways or forward—the robot gradually begins to turn left or right. When I move forward or to the right, the robot gradually turns left; when I move backward or to the left, the robot gradually turns right. We've checked the mechanics of the Swerve Modules (Swerve Drive Specialties MK4i), but the problem persists... we went through the whole season with this problem and just now we got time to solve it, but we weren't able to.

In addition, after walking with the robot for some time and rotating around its own axis, Pigeon begins to accumulate error. After that, even when the robot is positioned straight, Pigeon does not indicate that it is straight. The same happens in the swerve visualization on the Elastic Dashboard and in the robot visualization in the Elastic Dashboard arena.

some important informations: we use the YAGSL library, xbox one X controller, 4 Kraken X60 for traction and 4 Neo V1.1 for direction.

Reddit doesn't allow me to upload videos, so if you guys could access this YouTube link to check and help us out, it would be fantastic for us!

Feedback on Practice CAD

Right after our season ended, I decided to spend some time designing a new robot completely from scratch, trying to incorporate what the meta looked like at the time.

I’m not really looking for feedback on whether this robot would be competitive or not. Instead, I’d love to hear thoughts on what I’m doing well mechanically, what design choices make sense, whether I'm using the most efficient process (using patterns and mirrors efficiently) and what areas I may be overlooking or handling poorly.

Any feedback is appreciated.

What are the most repetitive CAD tasks you do every build season?

Doin some research on FRC mechanical design workflows:

Curious what CAD operations your team does over and over every season.

  • What parts do you find yourself designing from scratch repeatedly? (gearbox plates, motor mounts, standoffs, etc.)
  • What dimensions are basically standard on your team? (bearing hole sizes, bolt patterns, sheet thickness, etc.)
  • When you're explaining a CAD change to a teammate verbally, how do you describe it? Like what words do you actually use?
  • What's the most annoying part of your CAD workflow that you wish was faster?

Asking because I'm trying to understand how FRC teams actually talk about mechanical design vs how it's formally documented.

A collection of photos of season pins

Here’s a collection of season pins starting from 2009 to present. Also added is a 2008 pin, not sure the history on it, but it is interesting nonetheless and also an SBPLI 2009 pin which is quite rare. (2026 on side bc it’s annoying large)

Parametric Drivebase 2

This is a parametric drivebase with support for different swerve module types.

Currently, the supported swerve types are the following:

  • MK4i
  • MK4n
  • MK5i
  • MK5n
  • WCP Swerve X2
  • WCP Swerve X2S (For the other WCP swerves, just select the Swerves in the assembly and change the config to whatever yours is. E.g X2c or X2i, just select the swerves in X2 folder and change the configurations of those)

So, this document allows teams to select whichever drivebase they have, manipulate the frame perimeter with ease and experiment super easily with how different swerves would look on their bot.

I’m currently looking for any bugs in this system, if you find any, lemme know brochacho. If there’s anything else you would like to see (a swerve drive that I didn’t put in the thing) just, lemme know brochacho.

How to become a good mentor

Hey everyone,

I have been thinking about lately about joining my local middle schools FIRST robotics chapter as a mentor and I have a few questions that I didn’t see a FAQ for in the rules.

  1. How do I actually become a mentor? I saw that there was a team near me but I’m not sure how to actually reach out for questions.

  2. I have never thought of myself as a good teacher to kids but loved competing when I was in school. Even more so I just want to inspire kids to learn/grow/fail and chase their dreams. What skills would I need to learn in order to become a good mentor. Pretty sure the coding space has changed dramatically in the past 12 years. Any suggestions on technical skills and people skills would be appreciated.

  3. This is going to sound open ended but what other questions should I be asking myself/community/team to gain a better understanding of what I need to learn.

Sorry if this has been answered before.

Mentors?

Hello! During the 2026 season as a rookie team and with only one primary mentor it did put a lot of stress onto him along with considering that it’s also one of the members parents. For the upcoming new season he is thinking about quitting, is there any way or tips to find new mentors to help out? Thank you!

Dutch Foundation Grant - We need votes

Hello everyone,
This year we participate in a grant from a Dutch foundation. To be eligible for the money we need votes, and a lot of votes, to get this money.

The website is sadly only in Dutch, but we want the grant to buy a lasercutter, 3D- printers, material, FTC and FRC parts. We will make our FTC Field available for other teams to test and train.

We also want to buy workshopkits to inspire more people to join. We have until 24th of May to gather as many votes as possible.

So, use the below URL to vote for our project (Passie naar Impact: Jongeren in de Techniek by Stichting Ghost).

The link to vote: https://voor.nl/voorbeeld-projecten/2026

Please share this if you’re able to🙏

Edit: You need to fill in your email, then you get a personal link to vote. After the the voting is complete, your email address will be deleted from the database.

FRC Programming Practice

There's a website created that gives is designed to help younger students learn FRC programming because there's not a ton of practice online

Currently the site has live coding problems in Java, C++, Python, Debugging MCQ (Java only) and Tutorials (Java Only)

The site will be expanding throughout the year! The GitHub repository is located in the footer of the site!

Feedback and trying the site out would be greatly appreciated. I would also appreciate feedback on the C++/Python code as I am unfamiliar with it.
