Where can I donate food near Ovid?

My family and I had a fantastic little camping vacation near Sampson State Park. We bought too much food and charcoal. We are wondering if there's a place nearby we can donate charcoal, potatoes, onions, some canned goods, and sodas?

Fireworks advice

Hi everyone! My family would like to see the fireworks in Watkins Glenn tonight. However, I suffer from daily migraines especially late at night as my pain meds tend to wear off. Any suggestions as to where we could see the show without getting stuck in traffic? I wouldn’t mind if we weren’t right in town.

Best books on history of upstate - from Erie Canal to Rust Belt Decay?

After biking most of the Empire State Trail from Rochester to NYC I’m fascinated to learn more about how upstate got from the heyday of Erie Canal to today.

The outline of it seems quite clear. Manufacturing built up along the route to move freight (first by water then by rail), only for a shrinking world and ultimately NAFTA to send it overseas, hollow things out, and the lack of reason for optimism stoked discontent among those who didn’t leave.

I’d love to learn more about the details though. What are the best books written about it?

Wells College says sale collapses, but buyer argues there’s still an offer for the Finger Lakes campus

The deal to sell Wells College is off — at least according to the college.

Wells College says the $12.5 million sale to the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge has fallen apart after the nonprofit failed to close, according to court papers.

But the Hiawatha Institute says it “vehemently disagrees” with that claim and still intends to purchase the campus on Cayuga Lake, it told syracuse.com. Full story.

Honeoye / Canandaigua Recommendations

My family and I will be staying between Honeoye and Canandaigua lakes, near the Bristol Mtn Resort and are looking for recommendations for our vacation in 2 weeks! My son is almost 9 and my daughter is 5.

We love hiking and are looking to see some beautiful waterfalls.

We also absolutely love ice cream and would love a list of local ice cream spots!

Whats the deal with Roseland waterpark? Is it open? I see widely varying reviews from it’s not open, it’s open and fantastic, it’s open but rides are broken. How about Seabreeze in Rochester? My son loves water parks, so I was hoping one of these would be open and have good reviews.

We do plan on taking the kids to Niagara Falls too. Last time I was here was about 10 years ago in November and it was lovely basically having it all to ourselves. Any recommendations for beating the crowds?

We’re really looking forward to our vacation!

New York State recently purchased 284 acres on the east side of Seneca Lake

The state Department of Environmental Conservation acquired the Seneca Lake property from the Boy Scouts of America through the New York State Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. Located in the Town of Ovid, the property encompasses the former Babcock-Hovey Scout Camp.

“Babcock-Hovey is a gem along Seneca Lake,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “By protecting this waterfront from development and connecting it to existing public lands, New York State will continue the camp’s legacy of affordable outdoor recreation for generations to come.”

Pickleball near Seneca Falls

I’m moving to Seneca falls next year for school and I’m trying to find some decent pickleball around the area. The closest real club that I’ve found so far is Syracuse Indoor pickleball. Does anyone know of any closer options?

Free Fishing Weekend

Just an FYI: This weekend (June 27th and 28th) you do not need a fishing license in order to fish. You of course still have to follow the regulations. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or at r/FishingNY.

Fourth of July

I live in metro Detroit and will be staying in Geneva on the 4th with my kid on my way up to the 1000 islands for a couple weeks. Curious about any recommendations for the area for that day? I also see Geneva does fireworks on the 4th so I’m looking for a good viewing point for my daughter and I!

Wells College says $12.5M Aurora campus sale will not move forward

https://auburnpub.com/news/local/education/article_0a9155b2-e622-4cff-a099-f911eedf027f.html#tracking-source=home-top-story

More than two months after a state Supreme Court judge approved the $12.5 million sale of Wells College's former Aurora campus, the college now says the transaction will not be moving forward.

In a letter to Cayuga County Court on Monday, attorneys for Wells College revealed the campus sale to the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge has been canceled.

"Hiawatha Institute did not proceed to closing under the terms of the purchase and sale agreement, and did not cure its default in failing to proceed to closing," the attorneys wrote. "As a result, Wells College has now terminated the purchase and sale agreement with Hiawatha Institute. Therefore, the sale will not be moving forward."

Wells College shared the development in response to one of the legal challenges to the sale. Harriet Higgins, an alumna who founded the Minerva Institute and unsuccessfully bid to buy the property, sought to block the transaction. The college's attorneys asked Judge Darius Lind, who approved the campus sale to the Hiawatha Institute, for an adjournment due to the circumstances.

After Wells College closed in 2024, it began to wind down its operations and dispose of its assets, the most significant of which is the 127-acre Aurora campus. The college hired CBRE, a global commercial real estate firm, to market the property.

Nearly a year after the closure, Wells College's board of trustees said it had received "multiple offers" for the campus.

Among the bidders was the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge, a nonprofit that sought to transform the Aurora campus into an Indigenous college. That wasn't the only aspect of the project, though. Other parts of the campus would be redeveloped used for other purposes, such as housing.

There were competing bidders, but after a months-long process, Wells College announced in January that the Hiawatha Institute's $12.5 million bid had been accepted.

Wells College asked for the Cayuga County Court's approval to sell the property, which was granted in April. Before Lind approved the sale, he rejected attempts by the Cayuga Nation and Higgins to intervene in the case.

In their letter, Wells College's attorneys did not say what the next steps will be to sell the property. Susan Henking, the college's president, said in January 2025 that if the college did not receive substantial offers, it would remarket the campus. If the second attempt failed, the college could proceed to an auction. But Henking noted the sale price would likely be less at auction.

The campus sale is an important part of Wells College's disposition process. Wells needs the proceeds to repay what it borrowed from its endowment, which will be forwarded to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the college's legacy partner.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Finger Lakes NY Wine Trip

Hello, I am doing some heavy research on wineries in the finger lakes for a group trip. It will be a total of 4 adults (2 couples and a young toddler).

I have created a list through reddit/chatgpt/google searches and am looking for some extra opinions to narrow down the list we have created.

List follows:

  • Kemmeter
  • Forge
  • Shaw
  • Ravines
  • Herman J Weimer
  • Dr Frank Constantine
  • Red Newt
  • Shalestone
  • Boundary Breaks
  • Hillick & Hobbs
  • Weis
  • Lamoreaux
  • McGregor Vineyards
  • Domain LeSeurre

Out of all of these, we hope to have 2 winery dedicated days, visiting 3 wineries each day with a designated driver. We will be staying in Dundee so most of the locations should meet our driving criteria. My fiancé and I have much more wine experience than our friends. We have had wine basically from all over the world during our travels and are trying to plan nice tastings from a new region for us and them. However, we all have the same palate and prefer dry wines, particularly dry reds.

We would really like to see the best white AND red offerings the Finger Lakes have. We want to plan the days so that each day has good whites and reds, between Seneca and Keuka Lakes. We appreciate any thoughts you might have!

Hi! Looking to find a location for a family reunion in 2028. Anywhere in the vicinity that could accommodate 60-80 people? We usually go to ski resorts or condo complexes where people can rent their own place to stay. Thanks!
