Is a forensic technician a fast paced position?

Hello there! I am looking to switch careers and I have always dreamed of working as a forensic technician ever since I was little. I have always found autopsies extremely fascinating! I’m a 28F now and have tried a few different career paths and haven’t found one that feels right for me. I have learned that I sadly do struggle a bit in a fast paced environment with a lot of multi tasking. I CAN do it, but it’s extremely stressful and does a number on my anxiety. And I don’t want to experience anymore burn out.
Before I get too serious about going back to school for forensics, I wanted to see what the pacing is like as a forensics tech? And also I’d love to hear about your day to day and if you enjoy your career overall!

Thank you so much!

What happened to the remains of pre-contact Aboriginal Australians? How come there are so few known to science? Do we know the leading causes of death for pre-contact Aboriginal Australians?

Aboriginal Australians have inhabited the Australian continent for 50,000 to 65,000 years.

We do have a few examples of pre-contact human remains. The 40,000 year old Lake Mungo remains, while offering revolutionary findings about cremation, are too fragmentary to identify causes of death. The 4,000 year old Narrabeen Man has a skeleton in much better condition, but his cause of death is clearly either an execution or a ritual murder. On an anecdotal note, an Aboriginal elder once told me that they used to bury bodies in tree hollows.

I've been working as a bush regenerator for over 3 years now. I've never come across any Aboriginal artifacts or found human remains in a tree hollow. In my job, we talk about the concept of cultural burns, as it is sometimes necessary.

  • That leads me to ask this question, did many pre-contact Aboriginal Australians get affected by smoke inhalation?
  • Did many die due to disasters or accidents?
  • What sort of diseases affected them before European contact?
  • Did many die due to malnutrition or starvation?
  • Or was violent death like that of Narrabeen Man the leading cause of death?

But it seems like we do not have enough Aboriginal Australian human remains to answer these questions. So where are 50k-65k years worth of Aboriginal Australian human remains?

  • Were many remains deliberately destroyed by previous governments trying to preserve the lie of Terra nullius?
  • Did many remains get lost due to being collected before researchers find out about them?
  • Did many remains just get thrown out in as lumbermill waste?
  • Was it likely that most Aboriginal Australian human remains have been lost due to a more thorough cremation than those of the Lake Mungo remains?
  • Did some Aboriginal Australian groups dispose of their dead in ways where it's difficult or impossible for us to find the remains (e.g. into the ocean)?

I also find it curious that there's this American horror fiction trope of the "Indian burial ground", but no such equivalent exists in Australia. Is there a reason why no such equivalent trope ever came about in Australia?

Can you tell if something is a stain from semen just by looking at it?

I'm concerned that my wife may be having an affair at work. I noticed what looks like semen stains in her underwear on days we definitely did not have sex.

Advice on first steps after college (B.S. Biology and Forensic Science):

Advice on first steps after college:

I'm a recent undergrad graduate that majored in B.S. biology and B.S. forensic science from Syracuse University and am based in Northeast Dallas Area. During my time in college, I didn't join a lab or try to until my senior year and wasn't able to get in one. I'm just looking for a job that can open a door. I want to become a medicolegal death investigator at the end of the day. As of right now I've been looking at a range of field jobs like Crime Scene Technician, Autopsy Technician, Crime Lab Technician, police records technician, forensic biologist, etc. Or, if there's any certificates or programs/ trainings I could do that would beef up my resume and make me more marketable and more willing to give a chance, and want specific skills I should acquire.

What should I do after completing my Bachelor's in Forensic Science? Looking for career advice.

Hi everyone,

I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science and I'm trying to plan my next steps. I'd love to hear from people who are already working in the field or have studied forensic science.

I have a few questions:

  1. Is it better to pursue an M.Sc. immediately or gain work experience first?

  2. Which specialization has the best career prospects?

  3. What skills or certifications should I learn while I'm still a student?

  4. Are there internships, fellowships, or training programs you'd recommend?

  5. What career paths are available in government, private labs, research, or academia?

  6. If you could start over after your bachelor's, what would you do differently?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people in India, but advice from other countries is also welcome.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences and suggestions.

Is it really not worth it in India?

So I'm a PCB student and I want to take forensic science after 12th but my father is against it since it's has less scope and salary ain't worth the years of hard work. I'm really interested in crime investigation. Yes, I know it's nothing like movies. I even asked them if I can take criminology, but he's against it too. I can't even go to another country because y'know money doesn't grow on trees. I have to choose money over something I'm interested in and it's nerving.

So is there really no hope in this field in India? Not even in near future?

Resume question

Should I add a relevant / related course section on my resume? If so should I add only the science courses related to DNA like bio, biochem, genetics, stats, and molecular bio. Or should I also include forensics classes I have taken that cover topics in the DNA field such as forensic biology, testimony and ethics, and forensic photography.

complete forensic science degree in the Philippines but I want to work abroad

I'm planning to have a career in forensic science in the near future. I've been researching universities in the Philippines where I can complete a full course and get a degree, though I want to work abroad since I'm aware forensic science isn't a very ideal career path in the Philippines. After more research, Ive found it's a very complicated process to complete a course in the Philippines then work abroad but forensic science is really what I want to commit to as a career, and work abroad (specifically the US, UK, Canada or if any of you have a tip on what country is most ideal.) Any tips or advice on what i should do?
