Sega Rally 2 (1999) - PC - 25th Anniversary Repack is amazing

Played through and completed the 10 Year Championship mode via the 25th Anniversary repack recently, what a fantastic game!
Unlocking new cars with each 1st place became addictive. More thoughts on the original '98 arcade game here;

While I enjoyed the arcade version, I mainly started with that for the blog as it's the original '98 version. The PC port with the repack seems like the definitive way to play now.

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 - Amazing graphics and gameplay, I can't believe it took me this long to try this game

Being a Sega fan, I never did try a Ridge Racer back in the day, even my PS owning friends were more into Sim racing with Gran Turismo.

Finally played this gem a little while ago and I love it!

How often did you play 'old' or 'retro' consoles in the 90s?

I think it's easy to forget that people were still playing a lot of older games in the 90s. It's crazy to think that the Mega Drive/Genesis and Super Nintendo for example were less than 10 years old in 1998! The PlayStation 4 is older than that in 2026! The graphical and tech leap doesn't seem nearly as impressive.

I still had my Mega Drive and would play it in the late 90s even after getting my Saturn and Dreamcast, but not nearly as much. I wasn't buying games for it, although with hindsight being 20/20 I wish I did! They would have been dirt cheap.

I had the Mega Drive hooked up at my grandparent's house, so used to play it a lot when visiting, and my grandmother even used to play the odd game of Columns!

Shining Force III - Scenario 2 (1998) - One of my all-time favourite SRPGs

This is from my playthrough of it a little while ago, playing the English patched Scenario 2 & 3.

Probably my favourite game/s on Sega Saturn! The SRPG gameplay is simple but so much fun, and it has one of my favourite stories in video games too. Lots of characters, intrigue and a great game-world to explore.

Do you still have your consoles and games from the 90s? Or beyond?

Pic is most of my Sega Saturn collection from the 90s and 2000s when it was still cheap to buy Saturn games!

I don't do a lot of collecting anymore, but kept all my old hardware.

I still enjoy playing the consoles, but I do also have flash carts and ODE now for the most part.

I've also still got my Mega Drive and Dreamcast, and still play them pretty often. So many games I didn't get to play back in the day or revisiting old favorites.

Sega Saturn Magazine #32 covers Dynamite Cop!

Sega Saturn Magazine #32 covers the awesome Dynamite Cop in a showcase article!

This game features non-stop beat-em-up action and some bizarre weaponry and would also see a great Sega Dreamcast port!

I loved renting this game back in the day, even though it was pretty short and basic, it's a lot of fun.

Street Fighter Zero 3/Alpha 3 (1998) - I love the Alpha series' look

Rose vs Cody!

The final revision of the 'Alpha' series, and it introduced some cool new ideas to the formula to become an enduring Capcom fighter! The Alpha series games all have some of my favourite Street Fighter aesthetics.

I personally like Alpha 2 the best, but Alpha 3 is fantastic too. The addition of the 3 'isms' is an interesting choice and varies up the match-ups considerably.

I also love the UI from this game a lot, with the scrolling text etc. Goes without saying the sprite and background work is phenomenal.

Virtua Fighter 3 (1996) - I think this is still one of the most impressive looking games ever

One of the most impressive looking games of all time, VF3 was mind-blowing in 1996. Along with Shenmue, probably one of the biggest 'wow' moments in gaming ever when it came to graphical leaps.

It introduced not just stunning character and stage models, but also things like uneven terrain that affected the fights and attack animations that changed when guarded by the opponent.

VF3tb, the next iteration of the game would come to Dreamcast in 1998, but was somewhat rushed and didn't turn up as nice as the arcade originals, despite the Dreamcast's more than capable power.
