Preview for Sonic Adventure from Sega Saturn Magazine #36 (October 1998)

Sonic Adventure would come out in 1998 for the Sega Dreamcast - the hype around this game was huge for Sega fans. I remember thinking the graphics were unbelievable and the scope of the game sounded huge. For me at least, the game lived up to the expectations.

Also cool to see Sonic and Segata Sanshiro side by side!

My write up for the game that defined Dreamcast for me is here;

Half-Life (1998) - one of my favourite FPS games of all time

Excellent level design, well thought out puzzles/obstacles, fun weapons and gunplay and a consistent and immersive aesthetic, Half-Life (1998) is still one of the best FPS experiences you can have in my opinion.

Mizzurna Falls (1998)

Opening moments of Mizzurna Falls (1998), a mystery game that looks to be inspired by the legendary TV series Twin Peaks.

Goal! Virtua Striker 2 Ver. 1998

GOAL!
Virtua Striker 2 ver. 1998 features fast paced, arcade action.
The Virtua Striker games were a big hit in the arcades, with stunning Model 3 quality graphics.

Suikoden II (1998) Duel

Duels in Suikoden II (1998) are dramatic alternatives to the usual battles of the game.

Pitching you in a one-on-one fight against another character, you must use verbal hints to counter their next move.

The cool camera effects and music make them very memorable.

Anyone ever play Shadow Tower?

It's tough to play the Japanese copy I have without understanding Japanese, but it's pretty cool, if not difficult.

Not too surprising considering it's by From Soft, but still.

(Almost) The whole Sega gang is here!

Been organizing my collection of consoles, I'm lucky enough to have the some of the boxes for my Mega Drive, Saturn and Dreamcast.

Crazy to think both the Saturn and Dreamcast both had releases in '98.

The lighting effects in the game are the best I've seen on Sega Saturn. The navigation system is also very impressive, I must say. I might be due a full re-play soon.

Love this game, I only really started playing a bit more of the Puyo games recently. I'm not very good at them, but the games are really charming.

Played this game for the first time a few years ago, specifically to play it for the blog. It is a great platformer and extremely well polished and presented!

I loved this game, probably the first game that made me actually jealous of my N64 owning friend, as the only wrestling game I had on Sega Saturn was In Your House.

I loved doing battle-royales and random exhibition matches to explore the huge roster's moveset.

Age of Empires II
Driver
Grand Theft Auto 2
Half-Life
Myth II
Sid Meier's Alpha Centuri
System Shock 2
Thief Gold
Unreal Tournament
Worms Armageddon
AND MANY MORE

I bought a bunch of games almost solely because I played them on this disc. Most notable would be Age of Empires II which I immediately fell in love with. IIRC it was the tutorial and the ability to do a skirmish on a single map with a handful of factions?

Half-Life is the 'Uplink' demo that was unique to the demo disc and wasn't actually a chunk of the real game, it was awesome and I replayed it a bunch.

I also ended up getting over the years;

Driver
GTA2
Thief
Unreal Tournament

and I'm keen to go back and really dive into Myth 2 and System Shock 2.

Fighting Vipers 2 (1998), Sega's companion to Virtua Fighter with a more over-the-top style.

Characters had breakable armour and the stages had breakable walls for big KOs!

The game looks gorgeous on model 3, the details of the dam in the background are amazing!

"Long, easy left, baby!"
Sega Rally 2 came out in 1998 on Sega's Model 3 arcade hardware. A stunning game with some white-knuckle arcade racing.
The arcade cabinet was notable for including a hand-brake, so you could really perfect those power-slides!

Found this while going through some old boxes! Two Sega Saturn controllers; I discovered recently that the top one looks to be an Australian exclusive variant released in 1995.
Note that it has the 'American' style D pad with a matte finish, but the overall form is closer to the later style below it.

I like the matte finish, but the later model has a much nicer D-Pad and I'm more used to the smaller XYZ buttons.

I found my old Sega Saturn manual at home, who else has fond memories of this awesome console?
