Discouragement at Bins

Do you feel discouraged when at the bins? Initially I was exited and hopeful to find things but recently I have become more discouraged and reluctant to go. Reason being, I see the same groups of resellers there and they always seem to get all the good stuff since they work in packs and for me, personally, it feels like I am just left looking at the leftovers and all the good items are all gone before I even start. Anybody feel this way? Resellers taking all the fun out of the bins? Maybe it is just me, not sure so thought to ask.

My finds from about the past 10 days.

Today's find was a few cassette tapes, the "A rumor of war" book, the Beach Boys album, and the KitchenAid Classic stand mixer. The stand mixer was seven dollars and eighty five cents. Other than it powering on and spinning up at the bins, I haven't tested it yet. This is my second KitchenAid stand mixer I have found.

These things were found within the past 10 days or so. ESS goggles, U.S. Navy cap, U.S. Navy blouse, Army cap, elbow and knee pads, Vietnam era duffel bag, signed team Glock photos, some cat plushies, and some WWII era gaiters made by Tweedie Footwear Corporation dated 1-12-45. The Team Glock photos are signed by Randi Rogers, Dave Sevigny, and R. Lee Ermey.

Other things that were not pictured were some DVDs, cds, vhs tapes, cassette tapes, and other G.I. clothing.

Cool find of the day

Found a bunch of cool things today.

The first floral jumpsuit, I’m trying to find some info on it. I see 1-2 pieces listed on poshmark but that’s about it.

What are your “White Whales”? Items you saw at the bins but didn’t get

What items are your “ones that got away”? I’ll go first. I found a full double rack of sport climbing gear (nuts and cams) And QuickDraws (normal and alpine) like 2k of stuff and I didn’t get any of it because I didn’t know what it was at the time. I have since gotten into climbing and kick myself about this lol

Catch and involuntary release (or, Why Did You Put These Out, Then?!)

I had an early appointment and decided to go to the bins because I'm not usually up and around when the better stuff seems to come out and after a quick pass before a rotation, I saw a Thinkpad in a bin getting wheeled back. Grumbled to myself but figured I would see what else I could find. The employees wheel the back rows of bins to the front and let us forward, so while everyone else is champing at the bit waiting for the new bins to come out, I look through the ones that are open and... a laptop! And there's another one poking out of another bin! The first one I found was dented and the screen was busted but these are at least 11th generation processors, I can definitely upcycle these. So while everyone else bolts for the new bins once the chain comes down, I loop around and grab three more laptops from that other bin. None of them have RAM or SSDs and the bottom plates were pulled off but they'd clip back on easily.

Finished looking around, got some other things, including a backpack that I stuffed the laptops in because they were heavy (I don't use carts because of maneuverability and I'm not trying to buy EVERYTHING that's interesting) and then go to check out. Cashier weighs everything else that I got, I plop the backpack on the scale and say it's also electronics.

"Are these computers? We can't sell them..."

Why not? Because they might have personal information. I told her that none of them had any storage (didn't mention that the bottom panels were all pulled off the laptops and that I suspected someone further up the supply chain stole the RAM and SSDs because who would donate computers taken apart like that...) but that didn't matter. She asked if I wanted to talk to the manager, I did and he came over with a stack of laptops. He said they had to go to GoodTech or whatever, which... not surprised, it's not the first time I had heard of that policy. Also he had another laptop that I had seen in someone else's cart so I knew he wasn't singling me out or anything, this load just had a bunch of stuff that they could sell for more on their site instead of to people who could actually use it. Shame, because this would have easily been my best haul from the bins ever.

At least it wasn't a total loss, I did get some other useful bits and the vintage Air Force parka in the last picture.

What’s the telltale sign that someone is a reseller?

basically the title - when you’re at the bins, what are the dead giveaways people are doing that tells you they’re a reseller?

I would just be there shopping for myself and my family, but it feels like everyone else is a professional reseller who does this 9-5 and they somehow know something I don’t about how to find the good brands or something. But maybe it’s just FOMO because they are so confident with their swarming - especially the teenage boys! I kind of want to talk to them and get some tips but I’m scared they’ll think I’m their “competition“. But maybe that’s just how everyone is at the bins?

Maybe I’m overthinking it. What do you guys think? And if you are a reseller yourself, is it annoying if casual shoppers ask you about your strategy or does that feel like they’re trying to learn your secrets?

Back cramps after digging in the Goodwill bins

Hi, does anyone have advice for my back problems from digging in the bins? I just got laid off so I’m going to be digging several times a week now, but it’s already screwing up my back to do the repetitive motion of leaning over, and standing back up, over and over. Does anyone have a similar issue, and a solution? Thanks!!

Shopping cart thieves - not just a myth!

I thought it was just a myth I keep seeing online about people stealing things out of other’s shopping carts and today it happened to me!

The aisles were narrow so I decided to leave my cart to the side with other filled shopping carts. I placed my bag full of clothes inside and kept shopping until I looked up to see someone at my cart and examining things inside my bag. I started to power walk over to the lady when I saw her literally dump out my entire bag into her shopping cart and then give my bag to her friend. I confronted her and she didn’t even apologize as she returned the items to me….just came here to vent and give a PSA to fellow shoppers to watch out!
