r/Gremlins

Joe Dante is why Gremlins works.

Having watched both The New Batch and the original Gremlins (1984), I now have a much deeper appreciation for the film and Joe Dante’s direction. While his style is more evident in the sequel than the original, I still enjoy and appreciate how he crafted the story and its structure. Dante didn’t compromise the film’s tone or atmosphere for a more zany approach. The horror and tension in the story remain strong, and the film still packs a punch.

There are scenes where Joe goes full force ‘Dante’ like the Pub sequence and the theatre sequence but they don’t feel overwhelming, they’re just right.

How many times has Gremlins been mentioned on SNL?

I tried to look online but the only thing I found was Bill Hader doing a Gizmo impression. I’d be shocked if they didn’t make any jokes about Gremlins around the time it came out. I also know about the Key & Peele sketch which takes up much of the search terms when looking for stuff. Just wondering if anyone remembered anything.

Gremlins Movie Night 🍿👹

Finished this Gremlins-inspired collectible piece recently and honestly had so much fun sculpting and bringing this one to life 👹🍿

The entire piece was modeled, resin printed, painted and assembled by me. I also added real fur for Stripe’s mohawk and hand painted all the tiny details like the popcorn, soda cup and movie props.

I wanted it to feel like a weird little 80s collectible straight out of a video store shelf.

Swipe to see some of the process photos and final shots 🙂

How will Gremlins 3 work?

If Warner Bros is aiming to make Gremlins 3 “for kids” and young adults how will it work since things shown in the first two films were pretty mature for kids of that time and still are to this day. The creatures themselves are mischievous and get up to no good outside the bounds of the animated series, is far more mature than the usual movie that is made for young adults.

And there’s a lot of things in those original films that wouldn’t be appropriate even for a Gremlins movie if made today.

Smoking.
Drinking.
Gambling.
Body horror.
Bodily harm.

The animated series dabbled in establishing modernised Gremlins media and it showed how boring and less inspired the creatures were once they lost their ‘human-like’ actions.

Mohawk – The Gremlins’ Leader (Gremlins 2)

First post here — I designed Mohawk from Gremlins 2 in LEGO, 1000+ pieces, 2 display positions

I've been on Reddit for a while without ever posting, but this project deserved to be shared.

Mohawk has always been my favorite character from Gremlins 2 — that charismatic and fearsome Mogwai with his iconic mohawk, menacing gaze and leader attitude. I couldn't find any LEGO version that did him justice, so I decided to build my own from scratch.

I paid close attention to the proportions, facial expressions and iconic details of the character, while staying true to the LEGO aesthetic.

The model has two display positions:

🐾 Standing

🪑 Sitting

It fits perfectly in a collection dedicated to Gremlins, cult cinema creatures, or display MOCs.

* The eye stickers were designed by me and printed by a professional printer — it's the small detail that makes all the difference on the final result!

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

Is there a lore reason to why in Gremlins 1, when gizmo gets wet he spawns Mogwai that look almost identical to him? but in other instances it’s not the case…

like I can understand why the New batch was different because the water got onto Billy’s painting and then dripped onto Gizmo. of course I’m not complaining that we get diverse mogwai, imo the new batch is a vast improvement over the first in terms of personality and well… actually staying alive.

84’ Gremlin that was located at the Horror make-up show in Universal studios Florida.

Photo is supposedly from 1990. This was the only photo I could find of it. If anyone has any photos or videos I’d love to see them!

Many people say “Gizmo has more screentime in the sequel”

I dare say reviews glazes Gizmo in the sequel more than the first film but I believe Gizmo has a bigger role in the original, as most of his screentime in The New Batch is his either getting tortured or him prepping to end Mohawk but he definitely goes missing for most of the sequel and isn’t as much of a presence like the original.

Gremlins binge worthy.

When Gremlins 3 comes out, to watch the entire franchise as a whole would be a treat but The New Batch ending is so bizarre to then watch Gremlins 3 which is set to return to the orignnal’s darker tone will be rather jarring. It’s an exciting time to be a fan as anything can happen.

Director Joe Dante (known for Gremlins and Looney Tunes: Back in Action) was heavily influenced by Bugs Bunny, often citing that he first learned of "gremlins" from a 1943 Bugs Bunny cartoon called Falling Hare. Dante aimed to bring the chaotic, subversive, and meta-textual humor of classic cartoons
