Young guy in Guelph trying a small business idea

Hi everyone,

I’m a young guy in Guelph trying out a small business idea and wanted to see if any local businesses would be interested.

I have a few NFC/QR review cards that can be placed at a front desk, counter, or checkout area of your business. Customers can tap the card with their phone or scan the QR code, and it can take them directly to the business’s Google review page.

I can come in, help set it up, show you how it works, and help make everything easy to use.

I’m just testing the idea right now, so if any business owner is interested or wants to ask questions, please send me a message.

Thank you!

Anyone have three bikes stolen?

So: yesterday or the day before I saw three people on bikes one with a trailer cutting across Edinburgh Market. They stopped in the same area looking rather furtive. Today I find these three cut locks.

Word to the prudent: bike thieves are about.

As we head into another week, here's a gentle reminder that accepting help is not a sign of weakness. It's one of the things that makes us human.

Many of us find it much easier to help than to be helped.
We'll happily drive a friend to an appointment, bring someone a meal, lend an ear, or drop everything for a loved one who needs us. It feels natural to give. But when the roles are reversed, something changes.

We tell ourselves:
'I don't want to bother anyone."
"They have enough on their plate."
"I'll figure it out myself."
'I don't want to owe anyone."

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that needing help meant we had failed. It doesn't. The truth is, when we allow someone to help us, we're giving them a gift too.

Helping another person gives us a sense of purpose. It reminds us that we matter, that we can make a difference, that our presence has value. Think about how good it feels when you've been able to comfort a friend, support a neighbour, or simply make someone's difficult day a little easier.

Why would we want to deny someone else the opportunity to experience that same feeling? Community was never meant to be one-sided.

Sometimes we're the ones offering support. Other times, we're the ones who need it. Neither role makes us any less valuable. In fact, allowing others to help us strengthens the bonds that hold communities together.

So if someone offers you a hand this week, consider accepting it with gratitude instead of guilt. You don't have to earn kindness, and you don't have to repay every act of generosity. Sometimes the greatest gift you can give someone is allowing them the opportunity to make a difference in your life.

Wishing everyone a week filled with compassion, humility, and the reminder that we're not meant to carry life's burdens alone. Strong communities are built not just by people who are willing to help, but also by people who are willing to accept it.

Missing Cat

We are missing our indoor cat, Buddy Grey or Greybee. If you see him please let us know! He slipped out the door a week ago and is likely hunkered down somewhere near home. We live near Stone Road and College Ave.
He’s fat and friendly, but will probably be too scared to come to you.
Thank you for keeping your eyes open for him!

Any barber recommendations for an older child with sensory processing challenges?

Looking for barber recommendations for my 13-year-old son who has sensory processing challenges. His skin is extremely sensitive, and even a tiny hair clipping landing on him is very distressing.

We’re hoping to find someone who is patient, kind, and understanding.

Of course we’re happy to pay whatever is necessary.

Thank you!

Burn in hell, soccer fans

I prefer local sports, so I only know that FIFA is on cuz its that time of year that I gotta squint at cars 20 times more often to determine whether or not its a maplemobile driven by someone's divorced chud uncle. Surprise! Its just a Corolla decked out for Uruguay.

Fun things for kids to do?

My wife Googled "Fun things to do with kids in the Guelph area". It was nice to see "Top sights in Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel: Funeral & Cremation Services: Guelph, Wellington and Area".

Tents by Speed River park

What's the deal with all the tents going up? I thought they weren't allowed near parks? I love what Bardos patio view has become.... tents lol.

If the city is going to allow this behavior the least they could do is lower my property tax. Cause it isnt good for property and area value.

Local stores for home goods

With money not being infinite but also would rather support fellow Guelphians businesses than the big box stores,

Where to go for bedsheets, pillows, duvets, bed frames, artwork, frames, books, bookshelves, small appliances, etc

Bonus for non home goods like outdoor toys, bikes, ice skates, etc

Pick-Up Soccer!

Big day for Canada Soccer! Leettt'sss Gooo!!!

I notice that there is a beauty, well kept field at York Road Park near the covered bridge that is not getting much attention, and would like to get some semi-competitive, co-ed pick up games going.

If anyone is interested, or knows anyone who might be interested in playing some recreational soccer without cost or commitment.

Let's get this thread going, in the hopes that we can get 12-22 people out per week.

I'm thinking Sundays..

10 AM or 8PM?

Anyone living at 1042 Paisley Rd (Paisley Square)? Looking for honest reviews!

Hey everyone,
My partner and I are looking at apartments in the west end and 1042 Paisley Road (Paisley Square) is currently on our radar. The location by the Costco and Zehrs seems super convenient, but we want the real scoop before we commit.
If you currently live there or lived there recently:
How is the management? Are they responsive to maintenance issues?
What are the biggest cons/annoyances about the building or the area?

Would love to hear your honest thoughts, pros, and cons. Thanks in advance

Would you leave a tip if you knew it went to the owner, not the employees?

I was wondering how you guys feel about the businesses in Guelph that accept tips, but 100% of the tips go to the owners and not to the employees.

I've seen it most commonly at fast-food and other chains, but I know of at least one local bar/restaurant that does this.

I personally find it to be predatory, deceptive, and unfair to both employees and to customers. I quite honestly think it should be illegal, because I don't believe any customer would leave a tip for a business if they were made aware that the tips went to the owner. I've always understood the practice of tipping to be a wage supplement or a show of appreciation for good service.

I think it's an especially despicable practice for a bar or restaurant to do, because of the widely accepted tipping etiquette of always tipping 15%-20% irregardless of the quality service. It's already a luxury to eat out, tipping an owner that has the funds to acquire and operate a business should not be a part of anyones expenses, in my opinion.

Although, I could be wrong which is why I wanted to make this a discussion. What do you guys think?

**Edit: today is a day where I was happy to be proven wrong - it is illegal; if your current employer has attempted to contract you into this, please consider sending a copy of your contract to the Ontario Labour Relations Board / report to Ontario Employment standards.
