Abandoned convert in St Leonards sadly rotting away

📍Convent of the Holy Child Jesus

🗺 Hastings, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

__________________________________________

🏚️ The Convent of the Holy Child Jesus, located on Magdalen Road in St Leonards-on-Sea, Hastings, was founded in 1848 by Cornelia Connelly as the mother-house for the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. The convent expanded in the mid-19th century with Gothic-style buildings designed by prominent Catholic architects William Wilkinson Wardell and Edward Welby Pugin. The Victorian Gothic chapel, designed by Pugin, was consecrated in 1868. In the 1970s, the order faced a decline in vocations and a falling demand for boarding education. The sisters made the financial decision to transfer the school to the Old Palace in Mayfield, East Sussex. After the nuns left in 1974, the site was used as an international language school until it eventually closed in the 2010s. Today, the building is badly neglected and derelict. The iconic Victorian-era library still remains filled with rare 1st-edition books left totally abandoned and rotting away.

Potential move to East Sussex

Hi everyone!

My partner and I are considering a move down to Hastings in the near future. We currently live in east London and are soon to be having a baby, both early 30s.

I have family near Brighton and originally we wanted to move there, but it’s not much cheaper rent wise than London and the commute for my partners hybrid job would be £500+ a month. So we decided we couldn’t really afford to move there since we’d have to compromise on rent price.

I’ve never been to Hastings but my partner recently went to visit our friend there and loved it.

The commute would be only a little less than Brighton but the rent prices are much more affordable.
Plus I could hop on a train to visit family fairly easily it seems.

We plan to visit the area to get a proper feel for the place. But we both have hobbies and a lifestyle here in London that we love and I want to be sure we’re not compromising on happiness for cheaper rent.

I guess we’re just the classic millennial couple who like to have lots of hobbies on the weekend after work. Between us we love skating, dancing, dog walks, good coffee spots, swimming, roaming book shops.

Since we’re having our first baby I’m hoping there’s a lot of young couples in the same boat as us and we can make friends.

Would love to hear people’s thoughts!

Street Market

The continental (international really) street market is on, & it's a very good little market with a nice selection of food from England, Mexico, Korea, the Philippines, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Jamaica, etc.

Additionally there are various festival knick-knack stalls with ponchos, bucket hats, jewellery, toys, trinkets, & even a legal adviser.

The event was a trial, & if they deem it a success it may become a regular feature.

Sushi spot in Source park closing down

The sushi spot in the courtyard is closing down on June 14th, really unfortunate as it was one of the best sushi places even compared to London. It’s one of my favorites and I don’t understand how people aren’t supporting it? Absolutely gutted now there won’t be a place for great sushi.

Have you guys ever tried it?

Ask about the police 🚨👮‍♂️🚓

26 y/o copper. Got anything to ask me - recruitment, how to handle the job, average day in job, lessons learnt, so forth - and I'll be happy to answer based on what I can say about my own experience as a police officer.

Secluded dog walks

Hey! I'm looking for somewhere to walk my dog. We usually go to the beach but I'd like to take her for a long forest walk - like a couple of hours at least. She's not reactive and fine with other animals/dogs.

Looking for something secluded, ideally Bexhill way but Hastings works.

Any suggestions? Tyia

One way day trips

I think it was my dad who told me years ago that homeless people in London would be offered a day trip to Hastings to cheer them up back in the 1950s or such. And the coaches would then accidentally leave without them. Whoopsy!

Anyone know if there's any truth in that at all?
