Hawaii’s new ahi labeling law takes effect July 1

>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Starting July 1, stores that sell raw ahi products in Hawaii will have to list the country of origin on their labels.

The state will initially enforce the new guidelines through education and outreach.

Those later found not in compliance could receive warnings or face fines.<

Hawai’i Bullying Open Dialogue

💭 **Did You Know?
Nearly **1 in 2 Hawaiʻi middle school students (48%)** reported experiencing bullying at school or electronically in 2023. That’s almost half of our keiki facing bullying in one form or another. ([Honolulu Civil Beat](https://civilbeat.org/2025/10/viral-bullying-videos-are-sign-of-bigger-problem-in-hawai%CA%BBi-schools/?utm\_source=chatgpt.com))

**Why do you think bullying is still so common in Hawaiʻi despite all the awareness campaigns?**

Is it social media? Lack of consequences? Parents? School culture? Something else?

There are no wrong answers. Let’s have a respectful conversation focused on finding real solutions—not placing blame.

Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported.

👇 Share your thoughts below. What do you think is the biggest step Hawaiʻi can take to reduce bullying?

Startling new law that will quash free speech

>Akina pointed out that the law was passed over the explicit objections of Hawaii’s own state attorney general, whose office warned the Legislature on multiple occasions that the measure was unconstitutional and would fail in court. Despite those warnings, Akina said, the Legislature and governor pressed ahead.

Akina said that Grassroot is being represented in court by the national Institute for Free Speech, which, he said, has a great record of standing up for the First Amendment.

“Fantastic,” replied Perry. “I can’t believe {the Legislature and governor[ didn’t listen to the state attorney general, who has actually probably read the Constitution. That’s very strange.”<

Supreme Court rules states can count late-arriving mailed ballots, rejecting Trump-led challenge

Hawaii has a common sense Mail Ballot Law - The Mailed Ballot must be received by mail to the Elections Office by 7:00pm the day of the Election. To me that makes sense and that should be the MINIMUM for any mail in ballot. Some States don't want to do this and they can be counted a WEEK later. I think we need Congress to impose this simple rule for all States if some are not bright enough or perhaps "fair" enough to do this? Seems like common sense? $.02

>Under Hawaii election law, your voted mail-in ballot must be received by your County Elections Division by Election Day. Please check official county resources for the specific time it must be received. <

>WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that states can count ballots that arrive after Election Day, a persistent target of President Donald Trump.

The 5-4 decision rejected a Republican-led attack on laws in more than half the states and the District of Columbia that permit mailed ballots to arrive and be counted some number of days after the election, provided they are postmarked by Election Day. The outcome spares officials the headache of changing their ballot rules just a few months before the 2026 midterm congressional elections.<

Hawaii Just Banned Something Other Places Build For Visitors. Why?

Hawaii cant have nice things... I'm not saying I support the North Shore project. Perhaps a gondola inside diamond head to a new viewing structure on top? or Inside Koko Head Crater to view the island and outer islands.

>Hawaii just outlawed gondolas, along with cable cars, aerial trams, and funiculars. These are now banned across the islands under a single new law just signed by Governor Green. The state erased an entire category of combined attraction and transportation. It did this to stop the one proposed ride that had been moving towards Oahu’s North Shore since 2019.<

Campaign Cash From Convicted Briber Is Raising Questions In Hawaiʻi LG Race

>When news spread that businessman Milton Choy was entangled in a federal corruption investigation in 2022, more than two dozen Hawaiʻi politicians hurried to return political contributions they had received from Choy. But Kauaʻi Mayor Derek Kawakami, who is now a leading candidate for lieutenant governor, was not among them.<

>“If I were Derek, I would be thinking real hard about how to explain it,” former longtime University of Hawaiʻi political science professor Neal Milner said.<

Businesses across Oahu prepare to close as rising costs strain operations

>Matsuoka said wage increases, while important for workers, also create additional financial pressure for businesses already operating on thin margins.

“With everything going up, our minimum wage went up,” she said. “But when minimum wage goes up, everybody’s pay scale goes up.”

At the same time, consumers are changing how they spend.

“People are really looking at what is going to be best for their family economics,” Matsuoka said. “Should we drive to our favorite restaurant across town, or should we stay within the neighborhood?”<

Honolulu aims to revive Biki rideshare by spending $1M on 600 bicycles

>Honolulu plans to revive the city’s troubled Biki bikeshare program by spending $1 million to buy 600 bikes. It also wants lawmakers to allocate another half-million dollars during the next fiscal year to fund bikeshare operations.

The strategy is to boost Biki’s bicycle inventory, increase ridership and improve customer service, said Roger Morton, the director of the city’s Department of Transportation Services.<

Crews to suspend search for father-son hikers off Hanauma Bay Ridge Trail

I know this area really well. In my teens I use to Ulua fish just to the left of this "bridge" at the mouth point of Hanauma Bay. We use to hike from Portlock side up the mountain (not road) and down to the Point (there was an empty lot across from Spitting Caves). We brought concrete bags and pvc pipe and made pole holders. We were in such good shape back then 😂 The concrete is still there today. We just mixed it with ocean water. Not a place you want to fall in. If you do you better be a good swimmer and probably just need to let the current take your around - which ever way it's going. Cant fight the current. This is unfortunately the third time this has happened there that I know of. 🙏

>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - After nearly four days of searching, officials have found no sign of a father and son from Korea believed to have been swept into the ocean off Hanauma Bay.

A 49-year-old man and his 16-year-old son, who were staying in Waikiki, left their hotel at around 7 a.m. Tuesday to hike Hanauma Bay Ridge Trail. They have not been seen since.

The search will be suspended at sunset.<

Secure funding for build in lava 2 Zone

Hello,

I'm looking for information on funding for building on land in the Lava 2 zone. Was denied a construction loan from the bank based on insurance not being available in zone 2. Any thoughts on any other options for construction that aren't hard money loans? Thanks

Police conduct sex trafficking, prostitution-related searches in Aiea, Pearl City

Are there any advocates who help women forced to do this? Please, I have had one reach out to me, yet am unable to find her help. She is NOT what you might think. She's an educated, non addict, honest person who is very willing to assist in stopping this cruelty. She needs help first. She is bullied and discriminated against for jobs, benefits, housing, and "programs". She does not lie, steal, commit fraud, or any other offenses. She is not "street smart", coming from a strict, hard working high-tech scientific family. She has been thru much trauma and has invisible disabilities that those untrained or prefer to be blind to obvious issues (physical) refuse to see and assist her.

Please, her life is worth saving. She was FORCED into this. She has more integrity than most people I know.

Pentagon restores mandatory flu shots for all recruits as boot camp outbreak sickens nearly 300

Why would anyone care about a flu shot for the young and healthy? Oh no - 300 healthy young men get the flu and dont feel well for a couple days. Big deal. The Flu shot is hit or miss anyway. Unless you're compromised or old - just get the flu if you happen to get it. How often do people get the flu every 5 years? Once or twice for a day or two? 😁

Supreme Court strikes down Hawaii law requiring permission to carry guns on private property

Hawaii lost their conceal lawsuit - properly allowing people to actually receive a permit if they qualify - SO TYPICAL HAWAII - they introduce a law that flips common sense. Hawaii says you basically CANNOT take a firearm anywhere unless there is a sign posted that says it is allowed. If private property doesn't want a firearm - they can post a sign that says it is prohibited. This has nothing to do with the current administration. Law abiding firearm owners are not the issue.
