Where do people get Halloween hissers in/ around Massachusetts?

My boss had given me 2 females (1 adult and 1 nymph) at my old job last year before I left, she told me she got hers when she went to Virginia to see family. The adult ended up dying and the nymph is now an adult and is doing really good. The problem is that I cannot find anyone selling them in my state and the only place in stock to buy them online is TC insects but the shipping cost is crazy. I’ve checked morph market too but I don’t want to buy a 10+ count or a colony starter group, I just want a few nymphs (like 3-4 maybe) or 1-2 adults.

Pregnant or just fat?

I’ve never had males and females together before and I’m hoping for some babies 🤞
I raised a small group recently and plan to get more from another colony for diversity (only two babies died from the group I got and one is one molt away from maturity, the rest are full grown)
Last night they got a special treat, their favorite food, pears. So they basically ignored everything else and gorged themselves on pears all night 😭
I have a photo of her, her “sister”, and a chunky male in the group
Their feedings are typically veggies though. Every feeding I offer vegetables and every other feeding I offer vegetables and fruit. They also get plain oats and kibble if they want it (I just let them have a bit of my dog’s kibble and yes, it’s a healthier brand)
They only like the dry foods inbetween feedings

Is this normal???

this roach won't flip back over if you put it on its back, unless you tickle it or nudge it and it's really lethargic. I know it's not the heating since I have it perfect and they have fresh food with no pesticides. Idk maybe it's just fat

Why did he kill himself :(

I guess he crawled under and couldnt get out? Why did he do that :( I dont even know how he got under there i didnt think they could dig or anything

I want to get another but im assuming i need to take out this out bc it was too heavy? Theres a ceramic tube i made as a hide thats heavy, should i take this out as well?

Additional question: since i dont know how long hes been like that (most likely a few days) can i dry preserve and pin him or should i keep him as a wet specimen?

Hisser found after a year

My daughter bought some MHC last year and 2 escaped. We found one a few weeks later making it's way across the living room floor.

Never found the other and after a month or so, resigned ourselves to the fact it must've died.

A while back i found a roach on the stairs and assumed it was a dubia that had escaped and put it in a small enclosure.

Well my partner went to feed that 'dubia' to one of our spiders today and it hissed!

So he brought it to me and, low and behold, it's the missing hisser.

(It was dark when I found it and I didn't really check it much once it was in it's new home, so I just thought it was a large female dubia - it's only half the size of it's siblings)

My question is, how on earth did it survive so long?! I could imagine it getting water from pipes or something, but what could it have been eating?

I'm still amazed it survived all this time.

Enclosure set up!

finally got the tank set up for the two males i’ll be receiving soon! I used a mix of cyprus’s mulch and coconut coir with just a small bit sphagnum moss and leaf litter to decorate the top!
the decorations are a synthetic vine auctioned to the back wall, a cork cylinder split in half to make two hides, a sanded branch and a small, shallow water dish buried enough so they can drink without falling in or climbing up!

any advice for changes are appreciated as this is my first time keeping hissers!

Why is he hitting a jig?

https://reddit.com/link/1vo7eex/video/urre7fy3ecjh1/player

I see him arch and lift his butt sometimes when the lid is closed and I look at him. I think he gets triggered by shadows through my curtain in the distance if not my own shadow. In this one he's wiggling his butt with the lid open. He's solitary, his roommate on the other side of the tank isolated from meeting because he's a bully. Just in case, is this potentially a bad jig?

Tank and location

Hey! Apologies for the- state of the room. We’re in the middle or rearranging/reorganizing (to make way for the hissers i’m setting up for!)
Wanting to see if this is a good location/tank for my boys before i start setting up the enclosure itself! (it will be flush to the wall there’s just some chords still in the way)
Tank is a Reptihabitat box does not state the dimensions but it looks to be a 5 gallon (same size as my tarantulas enclosure)

New to roaches (part deux)

Hello again! In my last post I asked for help with sexing one of our new roaches. Now I’m here to make sure we’re caring for them well. My 7 year old participated in a bug summer camp and at the end got to take home some hissers! We’re completely new to roaches. We have 5 in a 7 gallon tank, zoo med creature soil substrate, some leaf litter and bark, a little coconut hut. Got a temperature and humidity gauge - humidity 45% (we’re misting) and the temp is around 80 degrees with a nano 40w ceramic heat emitter. Have a small cup of gel water. Another of oats. And have given some fresh lettuce, banana, and insect jelly cups over the past few weeks. Does this sound like an okay set up?

New to roaches!

Hi there,
My 7 year old kiddo participated in a bug summer camp and at the end was gifted some Madagascar hissing cockroaches. We have 5 of them in a 7 gallon tank (I’ll be posting their enclosure here for feedback!). We asked for all one sex (I’m not ready for babies). They said they were all boys but my son is convinced this one is a girl. Tried hard to get a pic of the booty but this one’s fast and likes to wedge itself in the egg carton and I didn’t want to hurt them.

help?

i need some info!

this roach that i own is a grown female and lives in a tank with two of her sisters. some time ago, maybe during spring, she started aborting her ootheca. of course, there were no babies, since she never interacted with male roaches.

she has this pattern every few month: she hides, doesn't eat longer that usual, sheds a part of her ootheca, than eats, hides again, and goes back to normal. she's THE ONLY ONE who does that out of all of them, even though they are the same age.

i thought it was a lack of hiding spaces, so i added more leafes and wood. she still does it. i don't think it's envitomental problem, since my other roaches are behaving fine, eating well and don't hide ever, even tho they have space to do so. they aren't stressed and never do something like she does. still, her colour seems fine and she hisses at me, she eats still and all. they have fish flakes (few kinds), leafes and fruits/veggies always.

what can be the cause? does that happen to any of you? will be greatefull for any answer!

Wanting to give away hissers, where to start?

Hello! I have a large colony of hissers that I'm considering thinning out by giving away/selling. I'm mostly doing this out of concern for their health, I have over 200 and even though they have a lot of room, I've noticed that some of them aren't great climbers (bad legs or foot pads), and they end up getting trampled or buried. I've also had a hard time maintaining plants because they end up fighting around them, trampling them, or my cleanup crew eats them haha :/

Just wondering what my options might be/where to post. I'd be a little nervous to ship them, but I know they're fairly hardy, so I wouldn't be too worried. Pics attached for reference (The one of them all dispersed was from last winter, I left my heater on the whole day and they loved it). Sorry if there are rules against selling discussions!
