Rug recommendations?

I finally found this ottoman that I really like, and this is the credenza I’ll be using. Now I’m stuck on the rug.

I’ve looked through what feels like hundreds of rugs, but nothing feels quite right. Most recommendations lean toward plain neutral rugs, but I don’t think that’s the direction I want to go. I’d like the room to have a little pop of color without feeling too busy.

One thing I’m also second-guessing is the ottoman itself. Do you think I should keep this brown one, or would a lighter neutral-colored ottoman work better with the space?

What rug style or design would you pair with these pieces? Would you go with:

  • Vintage-inspired?
  • Modern abstract?
  • Geometric?
  • Organic pattern?
  • Something with subtle color?

I’m trying to avoid a plain beige or ivory rug. I’d love something with a little personality that still feels cohesive.

Here are the photos in order:

  1. An AI rendering of how I envision the room.
  2. The original photo of the ottoman.
  3. The original photo of the credenza.
  4. Photos of the actual space.

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or specific rug recommendations. Thanks!

What’s going on with this attic?

This house on a lake in NH. The view from this side of the lake is the lake and the forested hills beyond, so most of the upper floor have vaulted ceilings and large picture windows to take in the view. Not this guy.
The attic seems quite spacious with only vents and not windows. Is this where they are storing the solar batteries or hvac units?

What's a house feature that seemed unnecessary until you had it?

I'm nowhere near building a house yet, but I spend way too much time looking at floor plans and home tours. I've noticed there are a lot of features that sound like nice to have until someone who's actually lived with them says they'd never go without them again. like little design choices that made everyday life easier.

Possible for this to be more Victorian Ornamental/Ornate? Please help

I’m getting this exact house in first image without the garage (but added room on the side where garage is near back) and I’m struggling.

I want to ask you kind people please help me; does this ornate design in images 2 & 3 a possible good look on this house? I’m considering a mix of fish scale with sliding. Wondering if I’m delusional as I’m getting ready to overhaul it.

Color HELP - Choosing Railing color on Front Porch

We have an old Victorian home - the top is green with off-white trim. The pictures show two options - one with off-white railings/balusters and one with white railings/balusters. The siding on the bottom of the house is an off-white color as well. Currently, the only white thing on the house is the gutters around the porch.

What are your thoughts? Go with white and make it stand out? Or go with off-white and preserve the color palette of the rest of the home?

Please help!

** Edited to add: See original photo in the comments. Both photos in post are mock-ups.

How to refresh this bathroom

I just bought this place and I’m trying to refresh this bathroom without doing a renovation. Unfortunately, I can’t paint and I can’t replace the tile, vanity, mirror, or anything structural.

I’m wondering if this bathroom can even be made to look more modern, or if I should lean into a different style instead.

I’m open to changing:

  • Shower curtain
  • Bath mat
  • Towels
  • Accessories
  • Decor
  • Hardware if it’s an easy swap

I’d love to hear what you’d do. If “modern” isn’t realistic with the existing beige tile and dark vanity, what style would you lean into instead? Looking for ideas that make it feel more intentional and updated without spending a fortune.

What accent wall color should I do to replace the navy/gray angled wall?

This is in my living room, I’m looking for a color that would contrast with the couch/carpet which are both beige, and still go with the surrounding wall color (SW Alpaca but it pulls more purple in my room as the window is west facing). That wall leads down the stairs into the basement and I want to do that whole wall one color but not as dark as the navy currently is because it would make the stairway extra spooky… advice appreciated!

Recommend a neutral paint color for our space

Hi I am having trouble choosing a paint color. I want something neutral to brighten up the space but not too white. I also don’t look yellow or too brown. Tried an alabaster swatch but it was too white. Let me know what you think.

Before/After bedroom design & remodel with custom millwork + a dark tray ceiling

This bedroom was part of a larger home design-build project we did on the North Shore of Chicago in Winnetka. Millwork was a big part of the design. What's everyone think?

If anyone wants to see the pictures from the entire project, let me know and I can share.

Repainting our 1887 home (renovated in 2003). Help us choose a character-building color scheme and simple details! 🎨

Hi everyone!

We are the new proud owners of this historic home built in 1887. It has incredible bones and it was renovated down to the studs back in 2003. The home was originally white.

Right now, the exterior cedar shingle style siding is badly fading and peeling, so a total repaint is at the top of our to-do list! 🎨 We have already locked in our painter, but not the color scheme!

We lean toward a European Cottage / Old World aesthetic and want to stick to mostly simple, high-impact changes rather than a massive structural overhaul.

Besides a fresh paint scheme, what simple architectural details, porch tweaks, trim ideas, or landscaping adjustments would you prioritize to bring some of the historic soul back to this house? 🏡

Which looks better? Arches, window grids, and trim details

We’re renovating our home and would love some outside opinions on a few design decisions. Photos attached.

Arched walkway: Which do you prefer, an arched opening with molding/trim or a clean, untrimmed plaster arch? The room will have crown molding and possibly baseboards throughout, so I’m trying to decide which option feels more cohesive

Window grille pattern: We’re definitely doing divided-light windows, but can’t decide between a simpler pattern with fewer grids or a more traditional pattern with more grids. Which do you prefer? FYI the house is stucco

Interior vs. exterior grilles: For those who have windows with simulated divided lights, how important is it that the interior grilles are applied to the glass (so you can see/feel them from the inside)? We’re considering wood interior/fiberglass exterior windows and are debating whether interior applied grilles are worth it. I like the look, but I’m hesitant because of the extra cleaning. For those who have lived with both, does it make a noticeable difference in real life, or is it something you stop noticing?
I’d especially love opinions from anyone with traditional, transitional, or cottage-style homes. Thanks!

I need to put in handrails for our front patio. I think I’d prefer black metal but still not sure. also should i have the rail go all the way across the left porch in front of the chairs too?

Finally starting a house extension what should I actually know before construction begins?

So I've been thinking about adding a rear extension to my place for a while now and I finally started looking into it properly. Spoke to a few contractors, got some quotes, did a lot of reading.

One thing I kept coming across was how much the prep work matters before anything physical starts foundations, planning permissions, drainage checks. More than I expected, honestly.

At some point I came across JMK contractor while going through different sites and it gave me a decent sense of what the whole process involves from start to finish. Helped me ask better questions when talking to builders.

What I didn't realise is how long the planning stage can drag on compared to the actual build time. That ratio feels completely off to me.

Anyone here been through something similar? And is there anything you wish you'd sorted out earlier before work started?
