I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

West hull gyms

Hi all,

I am 32 very unfit and have been for a while now my weight isn't the best and I want to start a gym.

I have looked at a few in my area online but I feel extremely nervous about going into one as I just feel people will judge me.

So I guess my question is what gyms are around the area that are welcoming for somebody with a little idea of what to do overweight and nervous

Thank you

How is Albany Street in Hull?

My boyfriend and I are looking for an affordable studio to rent in Hull. We’ve never lived here before, so we don’t really know the different areas. We found a studio on Albany Street and we’re going for a viewing. Does anyone know what the street is like?

Moving to Manchester Area. KCOM want £400 for early termination!

Title really. I'd be happy to keep KCOM but they don't supply my new area. I now can't get out of the contract without paying 90% of it off, which is about £400!!?

I'm aware this is likely in the T&C but surely them not being able to give me the service means that I "shouldn't" be charged this.

Can anyone help with any info surrounding this or am I screwed?

Kcom

Coming up for renewal, connexin have an open offer at 900mbs for 39.99 currently, and I've been offered kcom package at 49.99 for the same.

Kcom are staying they'll throw in 2x eero boxes which they say the speeds would be better than what connexin can offer.

Is this true?

Second problem, just had a flyer through for kcom staying new customers get 2x eero boxes and 900mbs for 32.99 a month, going up to 35.99 next year.

Has anyone bargained with them to get the new customer prices? Ridiculous it's £17 more expensive 🫪

Vape shops

Am I alone is being extremely suspicious of the proliferation of vape shops on every Hull Street, sometimes 2 and 3 in a row, always empy whenever you pass. What's going on?

Am I being unreasonable to suspect they are being used for money laundering?

Where to watch play off final in Hull?

I got a ticket as I'm a season pass holder so this isn't for me but for my dad.

My dad and neighbour are looking after the kids in the house whilst I'm away down in Londkn watching the final. On the day of the final my neighbour will be watching the kids but my dad is wondering where any other fans not attending are going to be watching the game?

GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS 💖 | A Pop Music Club Night

Hi everyone - I run Pop³ (Pop Cubed), an independent pop club night in Hull focused on creating fun nights centred around the pop/alt-pop music.

Our next event (GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS 💖) is happening this Friday at Union Mashup.

The night is inspired by the artists shaping pop culture right now - expect music from the likes of Charli XCX, PinkPantheress, Zara Larsson, Addison Rae, Slayyyter, Shygirl, Kim Petras and more, alongside other pop anthems, club edits and dance tracks throughout the night.

I started Pop³ because I felt like there wasn’t really a dedicated space/night locally for this kind of music/atmosphere - especially one that felt inclusive and focused on creating a good crowd.

If it sounds like your kind of thing, or you fancy something different to start off the Bank Holiday weekend come along - it's free entry. Would love to see some of you there 💖

Event Details:

📍 Union Mash-Up

📅 Friday 22 May

⏰ 9pm – late

🎟️ Free entry

Happy to answer any questions in the comments. Please follow us on Instagram if you're interested in this event/future events.

Audacity of KCOM

Always been with them in Hull since they were the only option. Now theres loads of cheaper alternatives, this is basically a reminder for me to change providers..

Reminder to never be loyal to companies
