I've recommended pallet collars for making raised beds and I'm adding some so I decided to create a photo record of the process I've followed
They are stackable and I chose to go three tall with these, others I have for shallow rooted plants are only two deep.
I pre-assembled them so I could apply wood treatment. The outside is treated with Ronseal forest green wooden fence preserver. The inside surface with food safe PVA diluted 2:1
After assembly at the final location i built up HugelKultur layers. The lowest layer was reclaimed timber from heat treated pallets cut up with a reciprocating saw. Layered in a alternating directions.
Then three layers of clean old cardboard from boxes, tape removed, covered with a layer of green garden waste and another layer of cardboard. The top layer is just soil. I had some lovely loam so I didn't need compost.
These are mainly going to be growing my winter veg and tomorrow I'll be putting in some cauliflower plugs. Probably some winter onions and beetroot next week. Around Oct/Nov I'll put in my garlic.
