Just wanted to take some photos of the collection now that it’s all together and displayed. It’s nice to see it all together. I include some close ups of some of my favorites. I plan on making some more detailed posts on a couple, the red domino in particular because of its unique flaws. The sideways screw post 152 with a rock in it is a fun one. Anyways hope you all enjoy my collection :)
There are the obvious things like falling off them or a ladder sliding off. Also the pole may look fine but it's rotten underground and when you push on it it may fall over.
I know second hand two people who have gotten killed climbing poles. One was out in the wild and he slipped off the pole and broke his neck. It was several days before they found him.
We bought a small collection from the mother whose son had died climbing a pole. It took her 30 years before she was able to sell the insulators he had gathered.
The third person, I know personally, climbed a pole not knowing there was a live wire. He got zapped and lost half of one of his fingers. Given he could have died, that was a "minor injury."
You are trespassing and stealing insulators. I have also heard horror stories about getting caught by the police.
Is all this worth it to get a dollar or two insulator off the pole? Go online or go to a the show and you will have the opportunity to buy thousands of insulators you have never seen for a very reasonable price. Many of them have a free table where you find insulators as good as, or better, than the ones you find in the wild. Or a dollar table.
Can you imagine your family finding you at the bottom of a pole after you have been lying there for several days?
Just don't do it please. I know of too many personal tragedies. If you think that would never happen to you, you are naive...
Does anyone know which brand/model of glass insulators would have most likely been used in Rahway, NJ (central New Jersey, about 16 miles southwest of manhattan) between 1920-1940? Thanks!
Need a third hand for slapping the skeeters!
Could definitely improve some things, but I hope you guys like this!
Hey all just wanted to share another fun recent pickup. I had no idea these were a thing and so tiny! Written on the skirt is PATT NOV 1870. Surge for comparison.
Just found the ceramic one yesterday, I never knew they made them like that but it looked so much like an insulator I looked it up and found that it was! Then today I found this sub and I was so excited! Wish me luck on my journey to build my collection!
PS. I (30F) started collecting them because my grandpa (90M) was a lineman for the county and he told me today when I showed him that I should have started collecting them 50 years ago and that he used to dig holes and bury them because he had so many he just needed to get rid of them! I could have cried! He did say my uncle may have a bunch though so hopefully I can convince him to let me take a look!
These aren't bad insulators, but 15 dollars?! Cmon goodwill. Keep in mind, goodwill gets all this FOR FREE!
I found this in my buddy's garage and gave him a 10 dollar target gift card for this bracket and an old 30s soda bottle. As you can see, I managed to make it into something actually usable.
I would appreciate if you guys could help me put a value on this. Embossed "B" on the front has a tiny ding on the back (not pictured) but otherwise perfect. Last picture is all the finds for the day
Shame its a broken one. Would love to have one thats intact.
