r/Jarrariums

My first jarrarium. It doesn't have a lot of terrain but I wanted to get a feel for it before I start adding variables like wood. It's still a bit murky because I didn't wash the gravel as much as I should have.
The plan is to manage this for a couple of months and if the plants doesn't die I'll try and add a couple of ramshorn snails.
First Jar
I had this 2g jar in my pantry for years. Decided it would make a nice tank on my desk.
I have a small sponge filter in it. Stole some ferns and rocks from my 20g tank. Bought some grass.
Hopefully rehome some shrimp from my current tank to this jar in a few months.
Closed jar inspired by the flora of Madagascar, 2 years after onset
Plectranthus rosulatus, Begonia pteridoides (dormant), Medinilla sedifolia and three different mosses.
Got these to build a terrarium and an “aquarium”
This is my first time building a jarrarium or terrarium of any kind. For the smaller one im looking into mostly plants with some springtails. Think maybe i can grab dirt and sand from outdoors? (I live by a decently sized lake in florida.
For the taller jar, this one id like to set up more like an aquarium. Mainly cherry shrimp and maybe some type of snail to help with breaking down dead plant matter.
I was looking into getting some small pieces of driftwood. For both.
Any suggestions welcome. Getting a grow light for both and maybe a different lid for the smaller one that will let light through. I want to make these guys as low maintenance as possible.
75-Day Update: My Ecosystem + New Microscope Analysis Video
Yesterday my ecosystem reached day 75, so I wanted to share an update with everyone following the project.
Over these last 25 days, I've had a mosquito larvae invasion + all the algae disappeared.
To mark this milestone, I’m also publishing a new YouTube video where I analyze fresh samples from the ecosystem under the microscope.
The goal is to compare what is happening now versus earlier stages and see how the ecosystem is progressing after 75 days.
If you’ve been following the project, thanks for the interest. Feedback, observations, and questions are welcome.

I found some test tubes at the local antique store and couldn’t resist
What are these white creatures?
This jar is about 2 weeks old, and it has many creatures that I can't take a good photo of because they are very small and fast. But I'm curious what these tiny thingsare in the pic
First real attempt at a freshwater jarrarium. Day 1. Wish me luck.
Just threw together some stuff from a local pond. Lots of squigglies and things moving around in there, hopefully some of it stays alive for a bit.
Any tips appreciated. I used to keep freshwater aquariums, but I'm completely new to enclosed systems like this and fully expect everything in here to melt and die and algae to take over.
I have this worm jar
I have no idea where i should post this. I had this worm jar for some time and I don't know what's in them I originally got the worms from some dirt and made it. Any idea what type of worms could be?
Any unsafety reasons about keeping open snail jar in your bedroom?
I am probably overthinking it but I saw snail poop on the jar glass above water level and started worrying that snail poop water evaporating into my room could be harmful.
Is this a real cause for worrying??
What’s this little creature in my seacosphere?? It seems to have legs
Jar Village
6 jars (out of an original 20) made at the same time from the same materials and stored together, evolving slightly differently, at 8 months.
just made my first jar yesterday and I've already seen so much life!
Cleaned up my grow box a bit 🌱

The box was getting pretty overcrowded, so I trimmed some plants back and replanted a bit of moss into another container.
I also took some cuttings from one of the overgrown plants(idk what kind they are) since they usually root pretty well in water anyway
Been sharing a lot more of these little setup updates lately on discord.Because I really enjoy seeing how other people manage their terrarium plants too.If anyone wants to join :https://discord.gg/rrKPE8XsE
The first and last pics are before/after of the box.
White crust forming on sticks at water line?
Hey everyone, i have a jar that’s been going for a few months now. I used lake water and dirt and added two sticks that pop out just an inch or two out of the top of the water.
As the water level goes down, the tops of the sticks that were previously submerged have been developing this white crust on it (pic attached). It seems to only come on the sticks after they’ve been submerged for a bit and then dry. Anyone know what it is or what could be causing it? Just want to make sure it’s nothing i need to be concerned about. Could it maybe be mold? It only started happening quite recently.
The jar has mostly micro organisms, some daphnia, and a few snails.
Thanks!
