Album of the Week - "Wenn Der Südwind Weht" by Roedelius

Hi everyone! Welcome again to our weekly album discussion. Any album can really be featured, whether it be well-known, overlooked, or by a more contemporary artist - as long as it’s in the style and spirit of classic krautrock/kosmische Muzik.

Wenn Der Südwind Weht

Release Year: 1981

Label: Sky

Formerly of the legendary electronic groups Cluster and Harmonia, Hans-Joachim Roedelius subsequently went on to record many solo albums from the late 70s onwards. “Wenn Der Südwind Weht” marks his seventh solo album, which largely continues in the spirit of the more tranquil, melodic offerings of mid-70s Cluster (e.g. Sowiesoso). Recommended for fans of the aforementioned two bands and electronic music enthusiasts in general.

Pere Ubu

Guys, if you want to hear an American song from the 70s with a strong whiff of Neu!, I recommend Heart of Darkness by Pere Ubu. It has a rhythm quite similar to the motorik

The profound influence of the Velvet Underground on Holger Czukay of CAN

Richie Unterberger: "What were Can's main influences from the world of rock [...]?"

Holger Czukay: "Everybody a little bit different. But mainly I would say the influence, for me, of [the] Beatles and Velvet Underground was most important. The Velvet Underground especially. They had something achieved which others didn't achieve. Even Jimi Hendrix didn't achieve that."

Jacco Gardner - Somnium

Recently re-discovered this gem after having passed over it's release. The 3rd album by Jacco Gardener who is normally known for his 'baroque-pop' revival style (which is also great). This one takes some heavy krautrock inspiration (I can hear Harmonia) plus some 70s tangerine-dream era stuff going on. After this was released the album was toured with a quadraphonic sound system.. which is quite cool

Saat

Release Year: 1972

Label: Pilz

Saat is the second and final album by the psychedelic folk-rock duo Emtidi, made up of the German Maik Hirschfeldt and the Canadian Dolly Holmes. Compared to the entirely acoustic preceding album, Saat’s more varied and textured instrumentation (integrating more electric keyboard instruments) lends it a dreamy, pastoral quality that is further accentuated by Holmes’ lovely vocals.
