What does r/krautrock think of SML?

Y’all, I know this sub is pretty fixated on the classics, and for good reason… we’re by and large discussing a genre that is 50 years old now. The original wave of Krautrock was happening in tandem with the jazz fusion period in the states, and there was crossover there even at that time.

To speak of the intersection of Krautrock and Jazz… have have you heard SML? Good gracious they might be the most inspired, unshackled by tradition, improvisationally gifted and just ON FIRE group of musicians currently existing today. While they are very unconcerned with genre (in fact, I’m pretty sure they are actively trying to demolish the entire concept of a genre), there is a lot of strong krautrock energy here, energy that intersects with jazz, with post rock, with ambient music…

Curious what all of the purists think about modern day stuff like this that is clearly inspired by krautrock and shares the soul of it (I feel), maybe even goes beyond and furthers the musical ideas. One of the more remarkable things about SML is that this is completely improvised on the spot. There is no plan going in. These musicians are tapping into eachother in the most incredible way to build this music on the fly.

Coast guard kid in AK with coke bottle glasses - early ‘80s

My mom said she cried the first time I put glasses on because I picked up and began examining a leaf like I’d never seen one before and she realized I had been nearly blind up til then.

Bass Appreciation post

Give me good bass playing that elevates the entire song. I think the bass as it’s used in jazz is up there among my favorite things when it is hitting hard. There are all manner of styles this applies to, but when the bass pushes through from the back with some musical brilliance or a fantastic tone or rhythmic structure… damn that shit is good.

I am all the way down for some classics, but I chose this song for Anna Butterrs transcendent playing - it’s such a simple bass line, but then they slowly start unpacking it in the most subtle, surprising and beautiful variations, that all serve to deepen and shade the melodic core of song. and create a rhythmic push and pull in the song. If dappled sunlight on a warm sunset evening was a bassline. I could swim in their bass playing here for hours.

What bass playing does it for you?
