Megathread: Votann in 11e

I'm creating this post as a repository for all things to do with the army in 11e, whether it be the state of the meta, important rule questions and/or rulings, Q&A, and general discussion about what the kin are doing in the new edition. This is a combination of conversations I've had in real life as well as observations, many of which are opinion based, so respectful discussion and discourse is encouraged as new information comes to light.

State of the meta (As of 07/05/26)

Votann seem to be doing very well. We're not as busted as T'au, but we've seen some early tournament wins, and it's clear that the good outweighs the bad.

The good

Votann have several very strong 2+1 detachment combinations, primarily Needgard and Mercenary Oathband, though I've had discussions with people that indicate brandfast and delve are having some luck. All of our +1 detachments seem to be solid, so as of right now it's a question of playstyle on which one players are choosing. Hearthband is also still strong, though people seem to be favoring the "hearthband-lite" detachment as a +1 rather than the full fledged 3 dwarf point hearthband.

Most of our units are solid. Even if it's harder for us to hit, we benefit significantly from the fact that cover no longer makes AP-1 weapons hit like a wet noodle. Thunderkyn and hekatons continue to be a terror, hearthguard are just as deadly as they were before if not more so. We've even seen some use of kapricus defenders and grimnyrs, which were previously poor choices, as their abilities have been buffed by the edition change.

Changes to hazardous have also worked in our favor: The evaluator can now overload his gun and not die after shooting twice, since failed hazard tests only inflict 1 wound on character models now. The grimnyr is also free to overcharge ancestral wrath and not worry about blowing up, because hazard wounds do not have to be taken on the model with the hazardouse weapon; You're now allowed to soak them on the CORVs, or the poor warrior retinue following them!

The bad

There are some casualties of course. Although they still have value as anti-T3 MSU artillery pieces, earthshakers have a hard time hitting the wall of a cave, even with spotters. While it only takes one hit to cause a battleshock test, hitting on 5s at best is rough if you fluff your number of attacks roll.

Additionally, hearthfyre is still our worst detachment by far, and persecution prospect, while getting some new life in changes to cover, seems to be falling behind its farseekers sibling in popularity.

The ugly

We have some ambiguous rules that, until clarified by GW, are subject to the whims of rules-as-intended rather than rules as written.

Chief among these is the issue with combat disembark on sagitaurs: RAW a unit disembarking from a transport that has advanced (even if it has special rules such as the sagitaur) must take hazard checks. This is clearly a problem until it's clarified.

There is also a question of how precision on steeljacks works; As written, it seems as though the stage where critical wounds are scored is AFTER allocation, meaning they're unable to fulfill their character sniping capabilities. Most gracious opponents are following the intent, but it's never good to have rules up in the air like this.

Brand New 40K Player Looking For Advice On My First 1K Point List

After almost a year of playing Kill Team I have decided to finally dip my toes into Warhammer proper and build an army based on my favorite KT (the Yaegirs) - Votann!

To that end, I’m hoping to start with a 1K army and play some casual matches while I learn and get my butt kicked a bunch. I’m also hoping that, since I already have my Yaegirs painted and themed - and would like my Votann army to be around that same theme too (gold, white, black touches, kroxigor scale blue, etc…), I wanted to incorporate my Yaegirs into that list.

With all that in mind, this is my very first attempt at a list. I would love any and all recommendations, criticism, and advice, I have no ego in this and have no idea what I’m doing. If anything your advice will help me not spend my money foolishly if I invest in the wrong stuff. With that in mind, my goal was to try not to buy a single vehicle centerpiece (the Land Raider, which I would get if I went to 2k points but at 1K think it’s too much) that would be an easy target and instead give me some more models with more toys to play with and, most importantly to me, this list at least on paper feels defensive and reactive, which is how I like to play the Yaegirs in Kill Team. But I’m willing and happy to learn if I’m wrong and need to pivot.

Detachment: Mercenary Oathband

Character: Kahl (Warlord) - Mass Gauntlet and Volkanite Pistol, rampart crest

Character: Brokhyr Iron-Master - grav rifle and hammer

Character: Einhyr Champion - mass hammer and combi bolter, Weavefield Crest

Character: Arkanyst Evaluator

Battleline: Hearthkyn Warriors (10, Kahl attaches)

Infantry: Einhyr Hearthguard (5, Einhyr Champion attaches) - teleport crest, Volkanite Disintegrators and concussion gauntlets

Infantry: Brokhyr Thunderkyn x2 (6, Brokhyr Iron-Master attaches) CC weapon and SP Conversion Beams

Infantry: Hernkyn Yaegirs (10) - Shotguns, Sniper, APM Missile Launcher

I believe this clocks in right at 995 points.

Kâhl almost finished

I'm quite happy with how this Kâhl looks. A few little adjustments and then I can start with the base.
I'm not sure yet if I want to add the crest. Tell me, whats the votann's opinion on crestless Kâhls?

Kinfolk Militia Bikers

I'm not a fan of the hover bikes personally. Dwarves need treads.

Next Project

My LGS recently had a big sale on broken used models. After a bit of surgery from the two sprues I had on hand, I'm closing the gap on 5 full squads, all WYSIWYG. Now I just gotta come up with a list to play them all in, haha.

I need help as a beginner.

I had my second game with a friend, before i went with Eldar just for the fun of the game and i lost to orks, again in Tabletop Sim. I figured The league would be a bit more tankier but had more of a shooting army theme going for them. I lost again, due to my poor army list. I am still much of a beginner and don't know what strategems helped for the units I ran and which were held back immensely.

What I ran (Hearthfyre Arsenal):
Arkanyst Evaluator

2x Hearthkyn Warrios, Ion Blasters w/Hylas auto rifle, Magna Rail Rifle, L7 Missile Launcher, and Plasma Beamer

Cthonian Earthshakers

Einhyr Hearthguard Volkanite Disintergrator, Graviton Hammer, & Weavefield Crest

Hekaton Land Fortress (Cyclic Ion Cannon, MATR autocannon, Twin bolt cannon (2), Panspectral Scanner

IronKin Steeljacks w/Heavy Volkanite Disintergrators (3 units)

2x Kapricus Defenders w/SmokeLauncher (no hylas rotary cannon)

I was unlucky the entire match, but my strategy wasn't good either. My einhry got killed in the first turn of combat as orks killed them with ease, (due in part with the beast boss). Hunta Rigs also made my warriors into mulch. I don't think I got to use any stratagems as their description was to focused on my turn or what the steeljacks managed to do. Either way, I could use some pointers and help here

My First Kyn

Finished painting the last of my First Kyn unit today and decided to share their glory with yall. The lighting is a bit off and the image quality is not the best. It's also the First faction o decided to actually collect, but Not my First Models.

Paint difference (also different primer

My original Einhyr champion (left) came straight from the votann combat patrol the day it was available in stores. I did change some things but i've had it varnished for months. And then there is my newest (right) i bought it with 5 hearthguard. I adore the difference

(Tbh i feel like me using a black primer compared to the near white i used originally)

My OC Kahl

Figured I'd share a pic of my finished Kahl. I'm not a particularly good painter; but it's perfect for my tabletop use.

This is my own OC, Kahl Kara Vektorn. My personal narrative is she's a mercenary that trades her Prospect's combat services for salvage rights to the battlefield after a conflict.

How do you paint this?

I bought some already assembled miniatures, how exactly am I supposed to paint in-between his armor and weapon there?

I am completely new to painting.
