Is having no Air Conditioning in Leuven student housing actually normal?

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming international student and am currently looking for accommodation in Leuven. I noticed that many studios/student rooms I actually like do not have air conditioning, and I was wondering if it is usually manageable in summer without AC? Does the heat become uncomfortable indoors?

Coming from a hot country, I’m a bit worried about this. Would really appreciate hearing your experiences and advice. Thank you!

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Its exam session and the city just sent me a tax form...all in Dutch...I have never worked during my time here. Should I be worried?

As per title.

So, student here, never worked a job here as my Master's is quite demanding, meaning I have in theory, no income to declare or taxes to pay.

Is it safe for me to just ignore the tax mail, or do I have to spend time looking up how taxes in Belgium work, what are deductibles etc.

Usually I would put in the effort out of respect but my exams are just round the corner and I don't wanna stress myself out...

Professional mental help

Hi everyone, Im a student in Leuven that is seeking professional help.
I don’t have much money at all and I want to keep it from my parents (they never took my problems seriously). The places I have found have fees up to 100 euros per session which I can’t afford. Im not a student at kuleuven so I can’t use their resources. I have had suspicions of having ADHD aswel as depression but by the time I started looking into it, I was already 18+ so the cost of researching it was too much for me. Ive become desperate now tho.

If you know a therapist or a psychologist, could you please send some details and the price. How much would it cost to get diagnosed?

Thank you.

Consumer rights and 2nd hand bikes

Hi everyone

I arrived in Leuven last month and bought a bike at kringwinkel, the bike came with a "3 weeks warranty" from velo, I checked that the Belgian law forces the shop to supply a 1 year warranty, is it true? And what would happen if the warranty would actually be from velo and not the shop? What would the warranty cover? Especially if the bike broke just at the end of the 3rd week and velo was closed, so I couldn't bring it

Thank you in advance

My experience with Syus Housing

A few months ago, I scheduled a viewing with Syus Housing. I arrived 15 minutes early, only for them to call me at the exact time of the viewing to tell me it was cancelled. No heads up, no apology. Just a last-minute call after I'd already made my way there.

Fast forward to a couple of days ago. I booked several viewings specifically for next academic year. I made sure to use the correct links for academic year rentals. The people showing the properties were pleasant enough, and I was told to fill out an application form and send my payslip and my parents if I was interested. Fine, no problem. I submitted applications for all the properties.

They replied shortly after, telling me the properties are only available for 3 months. I specifically booked through the academic year listings. Either their website is misleading or there's a serious lack of communication internally, because I wasted an entire day viewing properties I was never actually eligible for.

To top it all off, the communication from the agency has been rude and passive aggressive throughout.
I really wish there were more honest reviews out there for student housing agencies like this.

Which one of these university institutions do you know to be the best at teaching Dutch from A1 to C1?

I want to study and move to Belgium and the master's degree I'm interested in (Pedagogische Wetenschappen) is in Dutch. Thus, I wanted to spend around 2 years just being a language student to learn the language at the necessary level before applying for the degree and actually be competent (C1).

If it helps I'd prefer to apply for the degree at University Ghent. Still, I have no problem moving to Ghent later on if the other two cities offer a better structure and courses when it comes to learning Dutch. So which one do you think is the best?

Meeting LGBTQ+

Hi! I’m female, turning 19 in a month and since i moved to Leuven I’ve felt very lonely. i see cute couples and people with pride buttons walking around everywhere but almost everyone i have met is just cis and straight and i’m still a bit shy to talk about my sexuality with them. i was wondering where i can easily meet people around my age who are lgbtq.

i’ve heard about the unique rainbow house but whenever i remember to look at the events there seems to be a lot of things scheduled for older people. I’m also too scared to travel to brussels by myself in the evenings so i cant go to lgbtq bars there. i tried sitting in cafes and hanging around thrift stores but no one has really talked to me because they’re all just there to do their own thing.

The only idea i have left is going up to someone with pride pins and asking where they got them (because i want some too) and hoping it ends in a nice conversation and we become friends. Apart from that, is there any specific place or even somewhere online where i can just talk to people like me? (especially as a shy person)

Cargo bike rental

Hi all,
we're coming to Leuven as tourist in June and I'm trying to figure out where to rent a cargo bike for two days to transport my kids while there. Velo doesn't have them and Lucien no longer offers short term rentals.
Are there any other options I'm missing?
Thanks in advance!

New Danish Micro Bakery in Heverlee

Hello everyone,

My name is Caroline, and I recently started my small home bakery, Ro Danish Bakery, in Heverlee (on Naamsesteenweg).

I specialize in authentic Scandinavian baked goods (I am from Denmark myself) using organic ingredients and sourdough - resulting in a slow fermentation process (for extra flavor and a healthy texture).

How does it work?

Every Wednesday, I open my doors for two seperate pick-up moments. Place your order before Monday 09.00 and everything is freshly baked and ready for you at your chosen pick-up moment on Wednesday. For now I only work with the pre-order system, but hopefully you will also be able to find Ro at the local Sunday market in Heverlee from mid-June.

Feel free to take a look at ro-danish-bakery.com or follow my baking adventures on Instagram.

Hope to see you soon on a Wednesday!

Warm regards,

Caroline – Ro Danish Bakery

Belgian Museum Week is on (17–24 May), with some great evening events later this week

Belgium's national Museum Week is running 17–24 May, with hundreds of activities across the country. The full programme is huge (worth a browse), but if you're around Brussels, Namur, Leuven or West Flanders later this week, a few museums are throwing some genuinely unusual evening openings.

Five picks:

🎨 Design Museum Brussels — a "one-on-one" with an object from the reserves Pick an item normally locked away in storage and get a private tête-à-tête: hear its story, and (with a bit of luck) maybe touch it. Followed by a guided tour on crystal or children's furniture. Thursday 21 May, 18:00–22:00 — €10 (free with the Museum Pass)info & tickets

🏦 National Bank Museum (Brussels) — a rare evening opening, free for everyone This one's normally only open weekdays during office hours, so you've probably never been. The 19th-century banking hall is genuinely impressive. You'll find out (among other things) why euro notes are so hard to counterfeit, and there's an optional guided walk through the city centre to see buildings connected to the Bank's past, present and future. Thursday 21 May, 17:00–22:00 — freeinfo & tickets

🌃 Nuit Blanche in Namur — 17 cultural venues open until midnight, all free The big Wallonia one. Laser art at Le Pavillon, compose your own music at Le Delta, irreverent folk songs at Musée Félicien Rops, mysteries to solve at MusAfrica, the Citadelle and Computer Museum NAM-IP. Plan a route or just wander. Everything is free except the Téléphérique cable car. Friday 22 May, 18:00–midnight — freefull programme

📚 KU Leuven University Library — humour hidden in the collections The "Spotvogels" exhibition shows that 17th-century students doodled in their margins and caricatured their professors just like everyone else. Smartphone in hand, you hunt for absurd humour hidden in the busts and paintings of the reading room, then climb the library tower for views over a lit-up Leuven. Ends with an hour of old peasant jokes featuring Emperor Charles V, told by Prof. Johan Verberckmoes. Thursday 21 May, 18:00–22:00 — €10 (free with the Museum Pass) ⚠️ The exhibition itself is in Dutch only — but the tower views and atmosphere work in any language. info & tickets

🎭 Ribbon Museum in Comines — improv comedy in a textile factory The Musée de la Rubanerie usually tells the story of how laces, candle wicks, seatbelts and ribbons get made. For one night, the local improv team takes on Parisian troupe Imp'Act in the factory-decor of the museum itself. Unexpected setting, unusual evening. Saturday 23 May, 19:00–21:30 — €10info & tickets

A couple of practical things:

  • All five events are open to anyone — no pass needed. The Museum Pass (€64.95/year, 260+ Belgian museums) just happens to cover the Design Museum Brussels and KU Leuven nocturnes for free, so if you're already considering one, this is a good week to use it.
  • Vote for "Masterpiece of the Year": at the end of the week one object gets crowned. A teddy bear? A Keith Haring? A miniature car? Vote before 25 May and you're in the draw to win an overnight stay for two in a museum city.
  • Full programme: hundreds more activities (daytime, kids, workshops, behind-the-scenes tours) at semainedesmuseesbelges.be.

Anyone planning to go to any of these? Or got a favourite Belgian museum you'd push everyone towards? Drop it in the comments.
