5 years progress

5 years in now and still applying twice daily, in hopes of getting fuller cheeks. I thought this sub could do with some long term updates as well, as most posts are rather short term updates. I have to add that the lighting does some favors though

Hi

Hi, I'm 22 years old. I can already see some outline of a beard, and I have androgenic body hair on my chest. In my family, my 33-year-old brother has no chest hair and only a few hairs on his mustache (which he shaves). My father, who is 60+, also has just a few hairs on his mustache and a very sparse goatee.

On the other hand, I’ve noticed many active follicles on my face. I think most of them aren't terminal yet, and since there is already an outline, I expect there are more hidden follicles underneath.

I'm starting a 2-3 year journey with minoxidil, tretinoin, and derma rolling. Are there any cases in the community where the rest of the family is completely beardless, but someone suddenly managed to grow a full beard?

4 month update

Vellus hairs are really starting to come in. I also can see some transitionals starting to appear. Really hope the vellus hairs I’ve circled in the last picture would turn terminal. Would love to get a higher cheek line eventually.

6 Weeks Update :)

Shaved between 4 weeks and 6 weeks (today) then let it grow back without touching it. Shaving again now, but wanted to post an update pic first.

Honestly surprised at how quickly the hairs are growing 🥹 I had been on minoxidil for a month or two a while ago but stopped and lost my progress. Not sure how much of an effect that has on the response time now, if any. I didn’t use tret or derma rolling frequently the first time around, so I think those have made a huge difference.

Routine:
- Minoxidil 1-2x a day
- Tretinoin every day
- 0.5mm derma rolling 1-2x a week
- 180mg Testosterone daily (FTM transgender)

Please try to refrain from debating my gender in the comments this time lmao

I’m about 1 year and 7 months into minoxidil twice a day. How much more growth can I expect at the 2 year mark?

I feel like I’ve plateaued. I had good progress, could literally grow nothing but a mustache and under my chin with sparse cheek hair. Is pushing through these last 5 months worth it? The part I’m not happy with at all is in the first pic where my cheeks connect to my mustache and chin. I feel like if this filled out slightly more I would be okay

1 year and half later

I used Minoxidil for around 6 months (liquid form), but I was very inconsistent during that time. About a year later, I decided to start again, this time being more consistent and serious about it.
I switched to the foam version and also started using a dermaroller every other night. Feel free to ask me any questions.
The pictures follow my timeline, starting from when I was inconsistent and not shaving regularly, to when I began taking the routine more seriously.

How did you notice the transition from vellus to terminal hair?

Like, was it slow and steady or was there a bunch or darker hair “all of a sudden”?

I’ve read a bit into it and saw that some people report that many hairs turn terminal at once.

I am currently at week 3 now, obviously there is not much of a change, if anything.

Should I go for it now?

Been on the sauce for about a year and a half now. Don’t really have any progress pictures unfortunately but debating if I should try to grow somewhat of a beard out. Not looking for anything crazy but just want to have a short boxed beard, hoping I can grow this longer then trim it down to something presentable?

Definitely still some spots on the cheeks but don’t know if growing it out will eventually cover those patches up? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Calling it Quits

14 months on the left vs 18 months on the right. Don’t know anymore if it’s another shitty shed or if it looked this bad last time and it was just a little more grown out, or if it’s just lighting. Going on 2 years and feel I haven’t made any progress since 5 months In. I’ve had thousands of vellus hairs for over a year with no signs of them darkening.

Made okay progress in the first few months that gave me hope. Had a shed and thought “this is it it’s going to come back thicker and progress some more” but it really didn’t. It came back to same level and stalled. Made maybe a handful of hairs in the following year, lots of vellus but doesn’t seem any of them matured. In a spot I’d hate to lose what I gained but also I can’t do this for the rest of my life, as some point I gotta call it a day and accept it’s not going to happen for me. Very underwhelming for the amount of money and time put in

Is it safe to apply topcial minoxidil to chest for chest hair growth?

I've been applying minoxidil to my arms for 4 months and to my face for 2 months. Been seeing better results on my face than my arms, so I figured that my body does respond to minoxidil. I want a hairier chest, but I've heard that applying minoxidil to chest causes heart failure. Minoxidil absorption is high on the face. So far I have had zero issues with my heart and have had no heart palpitations ever since I've started using minoxidil on my face. I wonder if I won't have issues with minoxidil for chest hair growth. What are your thoughts?

Anyone 35+ achieve good results?

The super gainers mostly seem to be on the young side. I feel that these are people that would have had a good beard at 30 either way, Minox just makes it come in faster.

I'm 40 myself, been using for a year. Definitely have results, but gains are much slower and I am not getting full coverage.

8 months journey update (Month 1 vs month 8)

21m. I was extremely consistent from month 1 to month 6, which is when I saw the most progress. I think it was in month 3 when I tried to grow something that could actually be called a beard.

No dermatamping. During the initial period, I was only consistent with minox twice a day.

For the last 2 months, I've applied minox maybe 10 days out of the whole 2 months. I just got a bit lazy and more or less always forgot to apply it. But my beard still seems to have stayed the same. No beard loss was noted.

I'm planning to restart applying minox consistently again as I still have certain spots (especially the cheek to mustache area) which I feel still have baby hairs.

P.S. My face looks a bit lean as I lost a bunch of weight by following a strength training plan and also by being in a caloric deficit. I'm not sure if this helps, but during this time my protein intake was super high (over 140g per day). Again, I'm not sure if this helped with the beard progress, but I've read hair is basically protein so thought of mentioning it here.
