Do not buy this Car

Went to look at an eclipse that had under "35,000" miles. Did a walk around, looked more heavily used. Every single rim was curb rashed all the way around. Went inside, back of automatic shift knob was extremely worn. Most interior looked decent though. Started it up, very bad lifter tick. I got a vid I'll try to post of that. Went for a drive and something was grinding really bad. Obvious it was wrecked and rolled back. Nothing on carfax.

Be careful out there if you're buying a used car.

Mechanic Audacity

So, I got my 4g eclipse during my c-section recovery. I knew going in that this car would probably have me questioning my life decisions but I was prepared for it. Being somewhat handy, I fixed a few things on this car but this time I was at WORK.

No one wants to be stranded at work. Heck, staring at spreadsheets all day, I just wanna go home so I go to Advanced to get a test done because my battery light is solid. The car is being a little funkle dorf after taking battery terminals and a thermostat sensor from my soul and now it's snatching an alternator from my wallet against my consent.

Alternator + core deposit $234 (rounded up). Cool. Shop next to me, the job takes less than an hour to do so let me see what they'll quote me for because labor + part = done in one go. Time saved, I'm back to work to nibble. Nah.

Granted all of my tools are always in my car but still, I didn't want to fix an alternator. I was tired. It was hot. And I'm hungry. I get this glorious quote from them. I looked at it twice, three times, and called my husband while holding back my laughter.

The job should've been around $350. I was fine with that. I just wanna go back to work because...I'm hungry and it's 98 freaking degrees outside. But $922.25?? For 30 -40 mins worth of work? And the alternator is right there, held on by hopes and dreams (3 bolts), and it has enough clearance because engineers still loved their jobs in those times, this company had the utmost audacity to try and rob me like this.

So, I went back to carquest because that's where the part is. All I did was walk there with the quote. The men there laugh. I laughed. I got my alternator for $230. My mobile mechanic had time and could get it done before I left from work. And bless his heart, I should've just called him instead of being the independent woman that I didn't want to be that day. He installs the part, checks the voltage, makes sure the car is good under heavy ass load, etc.

$100 for labor...

$40 back on my card after core deposit came back.

Total?

$290!!!

This company can catch these hands! $922.25!? It's THREE bolts and a dang belt!! Take your quote and shove it!

Now I feel better.

I love her so much

My first car, my dream car. I’ve had her for around a year and a half now and still love her as much as the day I got her. Best car ever imo

New to eclipses, is there a good way to make the window seal well again?

Just got an eclipse and I’m getting little things sorted out. I found there’s a decent gap in the passenger window seal (I can fit a zip tie no issue lol). Can you get thicker gaskets? Or can I add anything on to fill the gap maybe?

09-12 rear numper acquired!!

I'm so happy! Got it for like 80 bucks at a junkyard. Will need some repair and a repaint, but that was to be expected for the price.

Hi, wondering if this is a good deal for $4500? (In LA)

156k miles, seller said

“1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS manual, clean title
a scratch on the paint. Perfect motor, head gasket and water pump done last year with receipts.
AC works, all windows work, sunroof works.
All trim is in good condition.
Passes smog
156,000 miles”

He also said brakes would be the next thing to upgrade if I plan on dailying it which I do as well as the passenger side door not working sometimes.

There isnt any other ones nearly as clean but the mileage is a bit high and I’m not sure if its a good deal. Listed for 7k then he went down to 5 then 4500. Please let me know and what I should look for if I do take a look.

Since last fall, I decided to customize my 07 Eclipse Spyder, since I wanted more than just the solid gray interior. Mostly just used Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric paint, and even with being my daily driver, it has held up almost perfectly! Completed it yesterday, super happy with how it turned out.

21 y/o university student thinking about buying a 1997 Eclipse GS as my first car — bad idea or worth it?

Hey everyone!,

I’m 21 years old, currently in university, and I’m seriously considering buying a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse as my first car. I live in the Canary Islands (Spain), so parts usually have to come from the US which makes things slower and more expensive because of shipping/import taxes.

The car is listed for 4500€ (around $5000 USD) and the current issues are:

- leaking steering rack/power steering system
- worn clutch that needs replacement soon
- rust starting on the roof
- scrape/damage on one side that at minimum needs paintwork

A mechanic told me the clutch replacement would cost around 430€ total (around $480 USD) including labor, which honestly seems reasonable to me.

The steering rack issue seems more serious though. The owner explained that the fluid leaks internally into the steering boots until they fill up and eventually dump fluid everywhere.

I also found a mechanic specialized in Japanese cars and he told me mechanical parts are still not too difficult to find, except for body panels/bodywork parts which are becoming harder to get.

Besides those issues, the car seems mechanically okay and I honestly love the look of the 2G Eclipse. I’d mostly use it for work and normal driving.

What worries me is whether I’m underestimating the reality of owning a nearly 30-year-old Eclipse as a first car, especially living somewhere where parts are harder to get.

Would you guys consider this a reasonable buy, or am I about to spend way more money than the car is actually worth? Also, how serious is roof rust usually on these cars?

I’d really appreciate honest opinions from people who actually owned or worked on these cars.

Update, this car keeps surprising me. Removed the manifold with a quarter inch ratchet

Almost all of the wiring is clear, just a few more things and the engine is ready to come out!
