HMS Victory (part 13): “Finished” the bow and bowsprit!
A few minor things need to be added:
- the entire bowhead figure (which a friend of mine is going to 3D print in great detail)
- Ropes for the main-stay
- some blocks+rigging

Recently I've started to build one of the rarest kits I have in my stash, which is the 1/700 JMSDF Ibuki by Tamiya. I'm a person who really likes to build JMSDF kits and when I randomly came across this on a Dutch marketplace app for €25 I could'nt skip out on it, especially since I've never seen nor heard of this kit/ship and also because it was by Tamiya. Due to its rarity, I'm curious to know, whats your rarest ship kit in your stash?
So this post is solely about ropes. Let me give you a short background, Ive made two other ships, the Heller Victory and the Soleil Royal. In both occasions I've used just standard waxxed cotton white ropes for the ships, mainly 0.2 and 0.6milimiters for the ratlines. The issue is Ive seen plenty of other people making strikingly beautiful contrasts on ropes like black and white, or making the ratlines one color and stay cables but then rigging ropes another and so on.
I want to be ambitious about this ship and do something of higher quality. So here are my questions?
What manufacturer makes good quality ropes that are as little as 0.2mm to 0.8mm good for this?
What type of color code works best?? Should ratliens be darker? What about the stay cables that hold masts? What about the rigging? Should the ropes that hold the eyelets and blocks be one color, but the rope for rigging be another?
What type of diameter is best for anchors, ratlines, rigging (my ships is 1:75)
Im also sending private messages to other ship makers I see on Instagram and YouTube but Ive not gotten a lot of answers.
Ive seen some amazing works here in this subreddit so id rather ask here. This will take some time to research properly before I buy anything so please be patient in answering my questions if you want to help
I’d like suggestions, if anyone has them, on a beginner level model ship? It’s a gift for my boyfriend. He said when he was in high school his parents got him a USS Constitution model ship and he spent hours working on it. He really enjoyed it back then, and would like to give it another go. I’m not looking to spend a TON of money, because he’s worried he may not enjoy it as much as he remembers.
Many thanks for any input!!
To commemorate the 250th Anniversary of American Independence, I’m proud to present this 3D print of battlecruiser USS Lexington. This specific design represents a hypothetical 1940s configuration of the vessel, with a modernized secondary battery and AA layout complementing an Alaska-style superstructure.
The model itself was 3D-printed in SLS Nylon and purchased off of Shapeways. I kept the camo simple by painting the ship almost entirely blue, replicating the US Navy’s Measure 21 pattern. To make the coloration more visually interesting, I detailed the rafts and boats in white.
The model used is the 1/1200 CC1 Lexington 1944 - Late War 20x 5/38 by Roe Tengco (Tiny Thingamajigs).
My dad bought this as a souvenir from his travels in the 70s and wove stories around how he sailed on something similar. The stories are treasured memories and so is this ship. Thus I need advice and help on how to clean the shells, redo the roping and making it clean again.
Thank you
Work in process. Started add flags, more ballast and small details on deck.
Mass more than 12kg. I need more ballast for realistic mass.
I just saw today that there's a new ship modeling forum, Dry Dock Modeler. I'm a bit confused about its foundation, does anyone know what's going on?
Previously, there were two main English-language ship modeling forums, Model Ship World (MSW), which is associated with the Nautical Research Guild (NRG), and Ships of Scale (SoS). MSW suffered a catastrophic collapse recently in May, deleting all posts going back to 2013 (when it had also suffered a catastrophic server failure...). It was rebooted several weeks ago. Since then, many previous MSW members have been reposting their old build logs and working to rebuild the site. However, the site's moderators also recently announced that they were going to be stepping back from their positions after many years. I believe that the NRG has found some but not all replacements, although I'm not entirely sure. Meanwhile, some MSW members also had migrated over to SoS, where they were also reposting build logs.
I now see that there's a new forum, Dry Dock Modeler (DDM), which just started up. It seems to be moderated by the previous MSW moderators and to largely be populated thus far by MSW members. However, unlike MSW, it is not associated with the NRG.
So, what's the deal here? Is it that disagreements or something between the NRG and MSW moderators led to the making of the new forum? Or disagreements between MSW/NRG and advertisers? I saw that Vanguard Models announced it would be sharing its updates at DDM. It previously posted a lot at MSW and there were a ton of build logs for its models there, so it would make sense to me if Vanguard was quite unhappy with the MSW crash, but that's just speculation on my part. From a user perspective, more important than behind-the-scenes drama or whatever is what this means for MSW. Is MSW facing serious problems that are making people jump ship? While I've been reposting old build logs at both SoS and MSW, it's been a long, slow process, and I really don't feel like doing a third round of reposts. It would also be a bit discouraging if, apart from any problems it may or may not be facing in the background, MSW doesn't get rebuilt because a bunch of the users instead go to DDM.
Apologies for the rambling post, just a bit bewildering to have the main forum collapse, be partially rebuilt, and then apparently split in the space of about 2 months.
First model I made around 2017 or so. I did not know what I was doing.
The second iteration that I started in 2020 has been going much better. It's all handpainted. Literally no spray paint. Please help me I'm insane

Hi all.
1:144 Semi scale HMS Tenby
I’ve strayed from my normal modelling of balsa and plasticard and have started a 3d printed model of a Type 12 frigate.
Made suitable progress so far but I’m wondering on the consensus for bollard colour, I normally just go with grey but I’ve also seen people going with white.
Can’t decide
Around 80 percent were all second hand at great prices. I’ll rarely buy new aslong as they’re sealed. A few I’m unfortunately missing boxes for including a Wing-nuts kit. Kits not shown; 1/350 Viribus Unitis, 1/350 HMS Lord Nelson, 1/350 Dreadnought 1908. They’re waiting to be collected.
Hello! A friend of mine found this at a goodwill about 8 years ago, and hasn’t really touched it since then. He has been trying to find any information he can find about it online but has been unsuccessful in finding out much about it. He wants to know more about it before he starts restoring it.
Namely, where the heck do I source it from???? I've googled my butt off and cant seem to find a good site or sites in which ti order photo etch for the Tamiya or Hasegawa lines.
Am I just using the wrong base models to start? I've found some for Academy models in 1/350 but that was a colossal (or felt like it) prices to find a verify that idk for before i spent the money.
Any input would be appreciated.
Hi everyone,
I am looking for the hull frames / body lines plan for the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi, but I've hit a dead end with the usual sources.
Here is what I have already tried:
Miyukikai: They have completely stopped selling their drawings and have no plans to reopen.
Kagero (Super Drawings in 3D): I have the book, but it does not contain the complete hull lines
Yuzuru Hiraga Digital Archive: The original blueprints are either incomplete, too distorted, or difficult to properly align for an accurate reconstruction.
Does anyone happen to have scans of the old Miyukikai plans, or perhaps the hull lines from the out-of-print Polish A.J. Press monographs or Japanese Gakken books?
Any help or point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
