Third side of the moon is about Sam Jayne

I have this head-cannon based around the lyric “a few days later they found you frozen in your car”. It’s rare that people are found dead like that without the cause being suicide and the lyrics don’t really imply suicide, they convey shock. Which is probably what he felt when Sam died because it was so out of nowhere and the cause was unknown medical conditions. Wonder if anyone else had this thought?

Between these 5 albums which is your favorite, and why?

There are 5 amazing albums that stand above the rest in my opinion from Modest mouse.

If you HAD to pick ONE which is your favorite between these 5 albums, and why…?

(In chronological order)

  1. This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (1996)

  2. The Lonesome Crowded West (1997)

  3. Building Nothing out of Something (2000)

  4. The Moon & Antarctica (2000)

  5. Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks (2001)

Anyone going to one of the album release parties?

I rsvp'd for St.Augustine, it's the day before my birthday! Hopefully I can make some new friends to go out for ice cream after! I have been avoiding this album so I can listen to it as a complete work of art...can't wait!

Looking for concert posters

Does anyone have any MM concert posters they are willing to part with?

Long story short, I am a HUGE MM fan. Unfortunately I lived in FL during MM (rightfully so) antiFL time. Flew to Brooklyn to see them . First thing I did was buy a poster!!then the show was canceled a few songs in due to a storm blowing through and my poster was ruined! Couldn’t make the rescheduled show. Bummer. Finally moved back to the east coast and For the last 13 years I’ve been dealing with major health issue which have forced me to miss any shows they’ve had in my area. I am finally doing good enough to see them this year and I couldn’t be happier!! But I’d really love to up my poster collection! Obviously willing to pay! Would LOVE a RedRocks poster but I know those are coveted ! If anyone has the Modest Mouse / Band of Horses poster (with the hot air balloon and anchor from we were dead before the ship sank) I would give a kidney. Not sure if it was a RedRocks exclusive or not. But not only is that my favorite album but I also have it tattooed on my arm. That would be my Holy Grail poster!

I’m sure I could find some on eBay or something , but I wanted to ask the Reddit community first!

Thanks in advance!

Golden Casket is

Golden casket is just an ugly Casanova album with different session musicians. It doesn’t feel like Modest Mouse to me… but I’m old and have been listening to the band since the 99’s. I thought of this because third side of the moon feels like a modest mouse song to me. What do y’all think?

Third Side of the Moon and Spitting Venom

It’s hard to put my finger on it but the two songs feel like musical cousins to me. Not siblings. But cousins for sure.

I’ve seen lots of comparisons of the new singles to We Were Dead and my perceived similarities between these two songs makes me agree.

New modest mouse sounds old!!!!

I’ve been listening to the new (three tracks on Apple Music of the new album) and I’m getting major old school MM vibes?!?! Is it just me or does it sound a lot like the great albums like “This is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about” or even leaning into “We were dread before the ship even sank”??? I am so excited to see them in Canada this year. Ottawa is going to be off the hook! I am so excited to see the new songs live and hope to hell there are some old ones in there as well! Isaac crushed it again!

Am I the only one whose favorite of the new batch of songs (that we've heard) is Dogbed?

So hyped to hear the studio version, the live version mesmerizes me every time.

Life’s a Dream

Question on possible next single, for anyone who may know. The Evergreen vinyl, as advertised online, appears to have a sticker saying “Featuring: Picking Dragon’s Pockets and Life’s a Dream.”

So is it reasonable to assume Life’s a Dream will be a single?

Can anyone tell me anything about this?

I've had this wooden poster as long as I can remember, but can't remember where or how I got it. Google only shows me results for the Buffalo poster, nothing for a Moose. Anyone happen to remember when this was issued and what for?

Somewhat Niche Observation

I'm relistening to We Were Dead for the millionth time this morning, and the way Isaac sings the "over" phrases in Spitting Venom sounds EXACTLY like Homestar Runner. In particular, the way Homestar says "The good times are over!" in Bug in Mouth Disease. I just needed to share this with more people.

My Top 10 MM Songs

In anticipation of their new album, I figured I'd go over my top 10 MM songs, explain my reasoning and see what y'all think. Without further ado...

10 : Third Side Of The Moon

I'll admit The Golden Casket wasn't my cup of tea, but Third Side (fittingly the 3rd single off their upcoming An Eraser & A Maze album) shows Brock knows the old and new MM can not only coexist, but flourish together. With shades of Ocean Breathes Salty and even Ansel, the production and especially vocals all tie together perfectly. With time this may climb even further up the list.

9 : Ansel

Speak of the devil. Definitely the most impactful track on Strangers To Ourselves, but even if we ignore the (heartbreaking) lyrics it's also a gorgeous song with excellent drumming. The mallet percussion makes it particularly memorable.

8 : Convenient Parking

Intense both in its cynicism and instrumentation, the 3rd song off Lonesome Crowded West veers into post-hardcore territory, more punk than emo. I don't have much to say except that it's a mainstay of my playlist.

7 : Tundra/Desert

I have to admit, Long Drive doesn't appeal to me as much as I wish it did. Dramamine almost made the list, but not quite, and so I'm surprised by just how much I adore Tundra/Desert. It makes me angry in just the right way.

6 : Trailer Trash

Of all the quieter, more somber MM tracks Trailer Trash is the one I most enjoy singing, and I can't sing for shit. Incredible execution of a fairly standard concept in the lyrics.

5 : Bukowski

This is the best song on Good News, and I refuse to hear any dissenting opinions. I remember hearing Float On for the first time, then checking out the whole album, and being completely captivated by Bukowski. Helps that I enjoy the titular author, and I was going through an existential crisis at the time. Some of their best guitar work.

4 : Teeth Like God's Shoeshine

Brock opens TLCW with a vivid picture and a prolonged scream, but the most memorable part of this track for me is the softer part, the nostalgia and all-too-prescient grief for a dying America. "Here's the man with teeth like God's shoeshine / He sparkles, shimmers, shines / Let's all have another Orange Julius / Thick syrup standing in lines / The malls are the soon-to-be ghost towns / Well, so long, farewell, goodbye" is MM's best verse bar none.

3 : Lives

My favourite song off TM&A mostly because it hits home for me so much. Halfway through it undergoes a tonal shift that confused me at first, since it comes after half an hour of sheer despair, but what could've been jarring lands thanks to an exceptional second half ending in a quiet bookend. Shockingly dynamic for a 3 minute track.

2 : Parting Of The Sensory

It might be a hot take, but yes, my 2nd favourite MM song of all time is from We Were Dead. When I listen it just possesses me entirely. Reminds me a bit of Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle".

1 : Cowboy Dan

I've met Cowboy Dan. Not literally, of course, but I've seen him in more than a few people, and sometimes it scares me what resentment can do to a person. Never before or since has Modest Mouse personified their themes like they do with Cowboy Dan. The song itself goes from loud to soft to loud again, the best of both worlds for sure. Simply iconic, and well deserving of the #1 spot.

Finally got my favorite band tattooed on me

The artist did an incredible job with the abstract nature of the artwork. I couldn’t be happier! I’m super excited to see how it will heal
