A lot of people like to read Nana as a gay love story and while I do believe that that reading is valid, I think the constant oh they just have comphet (something written by a bisexual 18yr old girl years ago) to wave away any instances where you can read the girls as straight, is just not accurate. I think that part of the reason why I don't think the girls denial in the story is only compulsory heterosexuality or anything like that is that I think it's that Ai was writing story about girls who were really best friends and codependent in that relationship, and not about homosexual/bisexual people. And I don't even say that because I don't want Ai writing gay love stories, I do. I just think if she wanted that to be an overt reading she would have put it in the story considering she's had trans and gay characters in Paradise Kiss.

Even though I as a bisexual person do see a lot of myself in both of the Nana's I do not think that that's what Ai was writing the story about, and I don't think it was intentional that there are these feelings of latent homosexuality within the book through a modern reading.

I definitely think that's why Hachi says that she wishes Nana O was a guy, because Hachi is a straight girl and so isn't sexually attracted to Nana, though you could make the case that even if Hachi was never meant to be homosexual or bisexual she definitely is romantically attracted to Nana even if she's not sexually.

I definitely think that a gay reading is allowed but I don't think it's what Ai intended and I think that's an instance that shows that she didn't intend that. So I think sometimes when people try to say that oh this shows that its all compulsory heterosexuality or anything like that.

I think that is a reading of the story, but I don't think that it's necessarily the only reading of a story. I really think that there's a population in this sub sometimes that has a hard time saying that it's a reading of the story not the absolute truth, because the way people talk on the sub sometimes you would think it's absolute truth they are in love with each other. I don't necessarily think that that is the only reading or even what Ai intended, even as somebody who likes to read it that way.

edit: Even if comphet is intentional or just part of life as a afab brought up in gendered society, the main criticism is that doesn't make the relationship canon or more true than other readings since alot of people seem to be hung up on that point.

edit: Yes Ai could have released a GL manga back in the day. Sailor Moon had openly gay Senshi and Revolutionary Girl Utena anime which is more gay than the Manga both released earlier than Nana.

In episode 15 right after Nana K caught Shoji cheating and all...The blonde high school girl Misato appears and while Nana wonders if she is in love with Nana O, she calls it weird. Internalised homophobia😭

I KNOW she immediately follows it up with "Maybe I'm the weird one" but oh god... JUST GET TO GET YOU BOTH! Wdym "if" Nana was a guy? SHE DOESN'T NEED TO BE A GUY😬

And ohhh Nana K thinking about wlw sex and how Mama O would be top was insane.

It's sad how both Nana's seem to centre men so much... It's sad to see as a bi girl as well... I haven't finished the series so no spoilers please! But I hope they both get together.

Well , what does it feel like to despise Hachi and Yukari , not despise but thinking " I'd never do dumb shit like that for a stupid man, I'd never reduce myself for a man like that" especially Hachi and then now you find yourself in the same condition as her.. unable to have the strength to get out of it.

Just a year ago , I was abusing the shit out of Takumi on here , I remember and now I fell in love with a real ,less intense version of him.

I just started nana for the first time and my question is, is junko just a bitch and a bad friend to hatchi? Or is it tough love? I’m having a hard time deciding. I just don’t like how she is quick to talk shit about her and judge her for all that she does. And I hated how she basically blamed hatchi for shoji cheating on her. Not once have I seen a scene where I thought she had any redeeming qualities or cut hatchi some slack. And her boyfriend also feeds into it. It seems like they both have no personal boundaries and have something quick to lecture hatchi about. They act like she has to share every detail with them. Someone please tell me she gets better….

Also since it is my first time I would love to see things or references, I wouldn’t get until I finished the show.
