Been doing bike deliveries and got tired of Google Maps sending me down unlit streets at night, so I built a bike nav app that scores routes for safety

Do a lot of bike/e-bike delivery work and kept running into the same problem — every nav app optimizes for speed, not whether the route's actually safe to ride at night. Poorly lit streets, high traffic exposure, sketchy intersections — none of that factors in, and when you're out riding for hours after dark it adds up.

So I built Svelta. Every route gets a safety score alongside the ETA (lighting, traffic exposure, real-time conditions), so you can see the trade-off before you commit, not find out the hard way three suburbs in.

Other stuff in it:

Turn-by-turn nav, day/night map themes

Live weather alerts along your actual route

Plain-English bike/e-bike law breakdown by state/province (AU, US, Canada)

Free, ad-supported, no account needed — your data stays on your device

Still early (just added US/Canada coverage), so genuinely keen for feedback from anyone else doing delivery work — you'll notice the safety scoring more than most riders will.

Svelta on Google Play

Soon on iOS 🚲

The Nightcycle Ground Finds Challenge

From now until the end of Summer (September 22, 2026), I'd like you guys to comment down below with (or post) pics of ground finds you've run into on your night cycle trips.

These can be anything interesting. Dropped items, lost weird little treasures, abandoned items, tools, toys, mystery objects, just anything random you come across on the ground. Not just trash.

You don't necessarily have to pick anything up. A photo of the find right where you spotted it is perfect.

I wanna see what kinds of strange, funny, or unexpected things are sitting out there after dark while we're riding around. Think of it as a little r/Nightcycling Ground Finds challenge for the rest of the summer.

Post your finds below in the comments or as it's own post, whenever you come across them. I'm curious to see what everybody ends up discovering.

Happy hunting!

Evenings are getting shorter

Went for a ride at 21h30 and it was dark when i got home 50 min later.
It seems like it’s only a week ago I could ride till 22h30 without using my lights.

We had a great night ride 🚲.

As posted earlier, we chose a super silent road which had no motor vehicle. Will plan again on full moon night.

Ain’t it funny how the night moves

I should do this more often! Much less traffic, and the cars that were out were probably tickled that I’m lit up like a Christmas tree 🎄

I’m in central Maryland, so hella humid in the summer. Just as humid at night, but much cooler temperatures
