Square Enix Upgrades

Square Enix is not offering free nor paid upgrades from the Switch 1 to the Switch 2 version of their games, also save files are incompatible. I'd like to know what you think about it or if you have any idea of why they would do that. I personally think of it as a way of getting people to spend more and I find it insulting to the consumer. In my case I own a copy of DQXIS (wich I played for 130+ hours) for the switch and I won't be able to upgrade like I was with Hollow Knight or BOTW. Also I was looking forward to buy the DQ7 remake for the Switch since I prefer to own physical copies of my games and then upgrade it (even if it meant spending an extra 10/20€) but I won't be able to. I think this might just be the last drop with Square Enix.

I’m thinking about buying a Nintendo Switch next year precisely because it doesn't have an achievement system.

Yes, believe it or not—even knowing that Nintendo consoles have their own exclusives and niche titles—the simple fact that the console lacks an achievement system is a huge draw for me.

My last Nintendo console was a Wii, a long time ago; in recent generations, I’ve played on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. While I enjoy those platforms, the trophy and achievement systems got me hooked. I found myself playing games solely for the achievements, looking up spoilers to avoid missing missable trophies, and ruining my experience with great games just to chase them. Eventually, I got too frustrated and realized it wasn't fun anymore—I was doing it just for the dopamine hit.

I wouldn't give up the other platforms entirely; I’d still play other games and go for achievements, but only after beating the game, or for titles I really love.

I had already started cutting back on gaming and achievement hunting, but looking at my profile—seeing the missing achievement percentages and "incomplete" games—would still trigger me and make me feel bad.

Then, last year, a friend lent me his Switch and I played *Breath of the Wild*. The sheer freedom—setting my own challenges and pursuing the game's built-in objectives—gave gaming a fresh feel for me. I’m thinking of buying one just to play for fun—which is what gaming should be about—without worrying about all that other stuff.

Convince me to buy FFVII

Hi everyone,

Seeing the sale on FFVII remake integrade for 14€ really made me hesitant to buy it. I have already played a bit on ps5 when I had the PS extra. The graphics and ambient were cool, but I really disliked the combat. I finished the first chapter and the scorpion boss fight was really not my cup of tea.

Is the game just not for me? Does it get better after on the combat aspect? For info, I really like turn based RPGs such as Persona, and I really loved Exp33. But I’ve also played Elden Ring and other souls like, so the mix seemed tempting at the beginning. I just didn’t vibe with it.

I really love heavy story based games. I haven’t played the original so I now nothing about it. Is it worth to stick with the combat just for the story?

Thank you everyone in advance!

I'm surprised mouse controls are actually popular

When I first saw mouse controls announced, I thought it was gonna be some weird niche thing that nobody uses, but based on comments I've seen online and talking to a few friends it seems like a decent amount of people are actually into them. Obviously the concept of mouse controls is not that weird given that PC games use them all the time, I'm just surprised they're popular on a console like the Switch. Obviously they're not viable in handheld mode, and I'm surprised at how they work for so many people in docked mode. I wouldn't have thought that many people are playing games with a flat surface right beside them like that. I guess there's more people that play at a desk with a monitor as opposed on a couch with a TV than I realized.

What good games to play for an older gamer?

I have a Nintendo Switch 2 and a bunch of Switch 1 games.

I ONLY PLAY SOLO and do not play online.

I am a much older gamer. About to turn 50 and loved all of the RPG games growing up like FF7 and Dragon Warrior, Zelda, Super Mario, Contra, Punch Out, etc.

As I have gotten older, I tend to like more action based not turn based.

Games I loved are:
Witcher 3 (absolutely my favorite)
Outer Worlds
Borderlands
Borderlands 2
All the Resident Evils (have not played Requiem)
Zelda BOW
Zelda TOTK
Metro 2033
Metro Last Light
Wolfenstein II
All Bio Shocks
Dark Souls
All Dooms
Dragons Dogma

Games that are good:
Mario Kart Deluxe 8
Borderlands Pre Sequel
Turok 2
Red Dead Redemption
Hyrule Warriors
Batman Arkham Asylum
Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
Madden 26 but too complex for my liking
Star Wars Knights of the Republic I and II
Star Wars Force Unleashed
Star Wars Republic Commando
Super Mario Odyssey (played half way through, got bored and sold the game)

Games I hated:
Batman Arkham Knight (I hate driving with cars impossible to control so gave up on the game almost immediately)
Turok
Zelda Skyword Sword
Star Wars Jedi Knight (I couldn’t figure out the controls)
Star Wars Racers
Assassins Creed Black Flag (found it boring and the mechanics are terrible)
Metroid Prime

Games I just bought but am either lost or bored after a few hours of playing:
Skyrim (Got past the Dragon and can explore everything but am at a Castle and got bored, stopped playing like a year ago).

Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy (Played to the first fight where it teaches you the different wand combinations and decided it was going to be too hard to remember so I stopped playing 2 months ago)

CyberPunk 2077 (I am lost after 3 hours and just finished the beginning. Almost stopped playing because the initial car is hard to control but stuck with it. I am currently at the APT and going to see if things get more digestible.

Last things to note. I have a really bad autoimmune disease that is causing me to lose feeling in my hands periodically so having to play games that require complex stick movements make me struggle. That’s probably why I don’t like some of the games I mentioned above.

Any positive comments are welcome. If you want to bash me, I will just delete and block you. I don’t have the desire to deal with negativity.

Games for young teens who like story

Hey All.

My teenie bopper kid has finished the following games and comes back to me to tell me the plot and how much she enjoyed them afterwards. Feels good man. Can you recommend some other games that would "hit similarly" as the kids say?

  • Spiritfarer
  • Azbu
  • Split Fiction (we played together)
  • Gris
  • Short Hike
  • Alba
  • ... struggling to remember others.

Also played Donut Country and Untitled Goose game, but yeah not the same category of game with story.

I have played What Remains of Edith Finch but I don't think that one is quite appropriate yet...

What games are worth playing on the switch? (Open world)

Hello everyone,

I currently have no game I'm actively playing and I would love to dive into it again. My favorite game of all time was The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. I also enjoyed Skyrim, but not as much.

I played Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and found the first one to be better. I also sunk a lot of hours into animal crossing.

What I really enjoy is a phenomenal open world. Either a sandbox with a lot of player freedom or a RPG. I don't like dungeons very much, I don't like puzzles and I don't like an empty world.

Does anyone have a few recommendations?

Can anyone give me $10-20 summer game recommendations? Stuck between FF7 Remake and Blue Prince, or something else entirely

Hey everyone! I’d like some recommendations for what game to start next! For context, my favourite games ever are BotW, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Outer Wilds, and Mario Galaxy. I also tend to love whatever Nintendo puts out, and am planning on getting Splatoon Raiders on launch. I also recently played Expedition 33 and loved it, so I’m trying to get more into RPGs, and I also finished Bananza and loved it.

I am considering getting either FF7 Remake, Blue Prince, or something else, or maybe starting OoT on NSO (although I don’t know whether I should wait for the remake).

FF7 because people have said that it’s similar to Expedition 33 (which I adored). I played the demo, and while the story hooked me a little, the combat is not something that I really enjoyed. Blue Prince caught my eye because of its massive praise, and since it’s being compared to Outer Wilds, one of my favourite games, I thought I should check it out.

My favourite genres are platforming, action-adventure, and puzzle games.

Can any of you recommend me some games?

What are some great board games on the Switch?

We absolutely love both Mario Party as well as Monopoly. Are there any more games like it for the Switch 2? I've unfortunately heard that Risk doesn't work so well.

Budget is tight so i'd prefer to not make an accidental wrong purchase.

Light-hearted, palate cleanser games?

I've been playing the same brilliant but incredibly depressing RPG for months now and my mental health is begging for a break, so I'm looking for something a little less maddening.

Any recs for compelling but not depressing story games, or maybe really good puzzle games? Maybe something like Journey? Disco Elysium sounds really good, but I can't tell how heavy it is. I don't particularly want something cosy unless it's super engaging (I got really bored playing Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley), and ideally I'd like to be able to get a physical copy.

Switch + switch 2 coop games

I gave my switch oled to my long distance friend and I have switch 2.
What are some games we can play together? She is not an experienced player I am looking for no stress experience for her.
Open to any suggestion buy I prefer something we can play for a while instead of finishing in a few days, like stardew valley.

Metroid Prime 4's environmental storytelling feels like a major step forward

Been thinking about this since the Nintendo Direct and wanted to share for anyone still on the fence. The visual design in Metroid Prime 4 is not just a technical upgrade over the original trilogy. The way environmental details communicate alien history and ecological collapse without a single line of dialogue is closer to what you see in illustrated fiction or concept art books than in most AAA releases.

For people who bounced off the series before because it felt cold or isolating, that quality is actually the point. The atmosphere comes through texture, light behavior, and architectural decay. It rewards the kind of attention you would bring to a graphic novel or a beautifully illustrated page.

The original Prime was already doing this in 2002, but the gap between intent and execution is much narrower now. What the team is doing with surface detail and ambient environmental cues on Switch 2 hardware looks like a real step forward for the franchise, and honestly for the medium.

Curious if others who gravitate toward games with strong art direction have been following the previews, or if Metroid just does not register on that radar for most people here. Also wondering if the $34.99 deal at GameStop is worth jumping on now or if there is likely to be a better window post launch.
