Struggling with Writing – Looking for Advice and Tips (OET Preparation)

Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well.

I am currently preparing for the OET exam, and I am finding the writing section quite challenging. I sometimes struggle with structuring my letters clearly, choosing appropriate formal language, and managing time effectively.

I would really appreciate any advice, tips, or strategies that have helped you improve your writing skills for OET. In particular, I would be grateful for guidance on how to organise the letter properly and avoid common mistakes.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Passed OET With Few days of Preparation

Non-US IMG here.,
I got the required scores in OET with only a few days of preparation, so I wanted to share my experience to motivate others who might be stressed about this exam.
Honestly, the actual OET exam felt very similar to the official sample tests on the OET website. If you practice those seriously, you’ll already have a good idea of the real exam pattern and difficulty level.
My preparation was simple:
I used to do 1 full mock test per day
I wrote only around 7 letters for Writing practice
For Speaking and general tips, I watched E2 Language videos on YouTube
That’s pretty much it.
A lot of people overthink OET, especially IMGs, but in my opinion consistency matters more than studying for months. Focus on understanding the exam format, practice under timed conditions, and work on your weak areas.
For Writing:
Learn the proper structure
Keep your language simple and professional
Understand what information is relevant
For Speaking:
Be natural and empathetic
Don’t try to sound “too advanced”
For Reading & Listening:
Daily practice and time management help a lot.
If English is not your first language, don’t panic. The exam is very doable with focused preparation.
Good luck to everyone preparing for OET. You can do it too.

You belong here.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of people preparing for Step 2 start feeling like they don’t belong here.

Like one bad score prediction, one failed block, one Reddit post, or one comparison suddenly erases everything they already survived to even reach this point.

But pause for a second and really think about your journey.

You passed prerequisites people quit during.
You survived medical school exams, rotations, sleepless nights, self doubt, burnout, sacrifices, pressure from family, pressure from yourself, and moments where you genuinely questioned whether you were capable.

And despite all of that… you’re here.

Preparing for Step 2.

Do you understand how far that actually is?

You did not accidentally end up here. You earned your seat at this table.

This exam is hard because medicine is hard. But difficulty does not mean you are incapable. It means you’re doing something that demands growth.

Have confidence in the work you’ve already put in. Reflect on the obstacles you’ve already overcome. The version of you from years ago would probably be shocked you even made it this far.

Rooting for all of you. Keep pushing. 💪🙏

Dear Dr. Roberts,

Re: Ms. Aime Hall, DOB: 11/04/1982

I am writing to refer Ms Hall who has
been diagnosed with gastro-oesophageal reflux complicated by stricture for
further assessment and possible investigation.

Today Ms Hall presents with the
complaints of dysphagia, especially with solid food and she noticed concomitant
epigastric pain radiating to back on distention. Recent weight loss without
changing diet. She also reported increased intake of coffee and alcohol.

My provisional diagnosis is gastro
oesophageal reflux which is complicated by stricture. She was advised to reduce
the intake of coffee and alcohol and pantoprazole 40 mg daily was
prescribed

It would be greatly appreciated if you could assess and manage as well as further investigation regarding her condition.

If you have
any question, please feel free to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

 Doctor

Remark,is it worth it

I got my results…😣 I felt that it was too difficult but I am so dissapointed now about writing and Listening score…

Writing 220
Listening 290
Reading 350
Speaking 340

Is it worth remarking the speaking score? Because if I passed two tasks, I only have to retake the other two.

My OET experience (and things I wish I knew earlier)

I want to share my experience with OET so others don’t go through unnecessary stress like I did.

Please note that this only my personal experience. Nothing more.

When I first planned to take OET, most people around me said it was an easy exam and that passing is almost guaranteed. In reality, that was misleading — OET is not easy. The questions are very specific, especially in listening and reading.
The questions can be very tricky with specific details and context.

During my first attempt, I felt confident because I believe my English is good (I previously scored 90 in TOEFL). However, I failed. I received B in all subtests except Speaking, where I scored 320.
I was surprised because I thought I performed well. I later realized I was not fully aware of how important the clinical communication criteria is in Speaking. Although I had preparation sessions with an OET tutor, this aspect was not emphasized enough for me.

It was a very stressful period while waiting for results and even after requesting a remark (which took around three weeks and did not change the score). I then booked another attempt immediately. And again, I had to take few days off from work and to drive 3 hours to the exam center. I was worried that even if I pass speaking this time, I might end up failing in writing or other subtests. Scoring B in writing in particular is somehow difficult.

I am happy to say I passed in my second attempt.
My scores:
Speaking 380, Writing 370, Reading 440, Listening 380.

TL;DR:
OET is not an easy exam — it requires targeted and early preparation. Early so you still have enough time before specific deadlines.

Learn the marking criteria for Writing and Speaking.

Listening and Reading can be very tricky, so practice under exam conditions.

Results can be unpredictable, especially Speaking and writing. Prepare for this.

Prepare early and don’t underestimate the exam.

OET requires preparation. Focus on criteria, not just English level.

Passed OET with a few days of fragmented preparation

Listening:420

Reading:400

Speaking:400

Writing:360

To begin with, I am not a native English speaker and I think the one thing that has helped me clear this test was watching English shows( with subtitles on).

My prep time was very fragmented , maybe some 5-6 days or even less.

I practiced speaking with chatgpt and asked it to grade my letters.

I practiced with oet sample tests and that's about it.

I felt kinda under prepared but during the test I was confident I will pass. It wasn't difficult at all.

In my opinion, doing just oet sample tests will suffice if you're in a time crunch like me.
