Oh god. Denise Powell ads are back.

And not only is she “one pissed off mom”, she’s also “fed up” too.

Election season can’t end quick enough.

OPD on I-80

Hey OPD. I get it, speeding is bad. But posting up on the shoulder with your lights on at 8:00 AM every weekday is causing more delay than the guy doing 10 over on his way to work.

Everyone in the right two lanes brake-checks the second they see flashing lights. That shockwave propagates back a mile and a half. You didn’t stop one speeder. You added 10-15 minutes to every commute behind you.

If the goal is safety, run it at 10 AM. Run it at 2 PM. Run it in the school zones where it actually matters. Sitting idle in the median during literal peak volume isn’t enforcement, it’s a bottleneck.

Looking for restaurants/take out spots that are community favorites. Recently moved to Elkhorn from Midtown and just unfamiliar with the Elkhorn/West O food scene. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Lgbtq+ community for Elder

Met an elder queer disabled man who recently moved to the Omaha area and is looking for community and though queer myself, I am not the most social person simply because it can be overwhelming for me. I recommended Omaha For Us for sober events and only just recently learned of Sober Social. What other places can I recommend to him where he can meet and make some friends who wouldn't mind driving to get him to and from events since he doesn't have a car at the moment? Or even other resources where he can foster community with like minded people?

Deep Omaha Facts

I’m here to enlighten you with some deep Omaha knowledge about a couple of downtown structures.

The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge was designed with a subtle 1.5 degree southward incline. Colloquially, this is called the "Omaha Lean”. It was intentionally engineered that way so that when high winds blow on it the structural tension naturally counterbalances the to prevent sway.

I have an equally obscure fact about the Omadong. The blue glass tinting on the iconic tower has a secret. City zoning code originally required high rises along Farnam Street to pass a strict shadow mitigation test. To comply, architects used a custom reflective glaze on the panels. This works as a thin sheath protecting from the sun’s penetrating rays. I’m still not what to dub this ideas but I’m open to ideas, “Comdonha”? “Omadon“?

29 schools in Omaha are now using the same shock gloves that ICE is using, and they have already been used on two students. Whatever you allow your government to do to others, they will eventually do to you and your children.

Omaha Public Schools requests SROs to not carry shock gloves, effective immediately

Message from OPS Superintendent

Dear Omaha Public Schools community,

Nothing is more important than the health, safety and well-being of every student we serve.

Nothing.

To me, to our Board of Education, to our 9,000 dedicated staff members.

When I learned last week that School Resource Officers were equipped with “Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters,” or GLOVEs, I had countless questions and concerns. Just as I know our Board, staff, students and families did.

We sought answers and accurate information.

We’ve had open and frank conversations with Omaha Mayor John Ewing and Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer.

We’ve heard community input and concern.

We listened.

Today, we communicated with both Omaha Police and Bellevue Police to request that School Resource Officers (SROs) no longer be authorized to carry GLOVEs on any Omaha Public Schools premises.

We recognize our long-standing relationships with law enforcement partners and the important role SROs have in promoting school safety.

Continued use of GLOVEs would be counterproductive to our work together.

As we heard at Monday’s Board of Education meeting, students must be safe and feel safe.

Tomorrow, we welcome students for the 2026-27 school year.

Serving our community is a privilege and a responsibly we take most seriously.

We have important, tough conversations.

And we stay grounded in our mission.

We are relentlessly focused on doing better for every student we serve.

Strengthening student experiences.

Fostering deeper connections with families.

Improving outcomes.

We are ready for the new year.

Thank you to our staff who make it happen.

Thank you to our families who entrust us with your children.

It is an honor to be part of our district community.

-Matthew

Well good on him, the school board, and the mayor for using common sense.

Data Center Opposition in Douglas County - Info Meetup @ Downtown Library 8/22

From the event page:

”Join us for discussion/information sharing about issues related to new Hyperscale Data Centers. Pick up posters and other printed materials.

DOUGLAS COUNTY NEEDS A DATA CENTER MORATORIUM!!!

Let's talk about what a campaign for a Douglas County Data Center Moratorium would look like.

Opposition to large new data centers is growing. Several very large projects have been proposed in and around the Omaha and Lincoln areas. Some are currently under construction.
Now is the time to learn, organize, and take action. We believe in cooperative knowledge building and a multi-pronged approach.

A moratorium, outright ban, or other impediments could happen at:

  • City level
  • County Board of Commissioners level
  • State level (via more robust executive order, or state legislation)
  • Natural resource district regulations
  • Ballot initiative
  • Utility level, (OPPD in Omaha area, NPPD other areas, LES, in Lincoln)
  • Federal level via a variety of possible means

Of this list, a County wide moratorium passed by the board of commissioners has the most precedent in other counties (13 counties in NE already had data center moratoriums). Now it's Douglas County's turn.”

Omaha Auto Repair Warning: My $278 Spark Plug Job at Ally Auto Service Turned Into a $6,100+ Mercedes Repair

Omaha people, I want to share my experience with Ally Auto Service in Omaha because I wish I had seen something like this before taking my car in.
I had been doing business with Ally Auto Service for years, going all the way back to when I was 18. Over that time, I spent tens of thousands of dollars with them.
On August 7, 2026, I brought my 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic to Ally Auto Service on West Center Road for routine spark plug maintenance.
The Mercedes was running and drivable when I brought it in. It was NOT there because of a cylinder 4 misfire or broken spark plug.
I paid $278.25 for the spark plug service.
After the installation, Ally later stated that the vehicle initially operated correctly. Then, during a later cold start while the vehicle was still there, the cylinder 4 spark plug failed and the engine immediately began misfiring.
Ally attempted to extract the broken spark plug.
Their extraction attempt failed.
I ultimately had to get my Mercedes TOWED out of Ally Auto Service and taken to another Omaha repair shop, Westgate High Tech, for an independent inspection.
That is where things got much worse.
Westgate documented that:
The cylinder 4 spark plug was broken in half.
The remaining portion was stuck inside the cylinder.
The plug was CROSS-THREADED.
The cylinder-head threads were visibly MANGLED.
The cylinder head now needs to be REMOVED from the engine.
The cylinder head needs to be sent to a MACHINE SHOP for attempted extraction and re-tapping.
And if the cylinder head cannot be repaired, it may ultimately have to be replaced.
The written repair estimate from Westgate High Tech is $6,142.96, plus a separate $251.25 diagnostic charge.
So a routine $278 spark plug service turned into more than $6,000 in documented corrective repairs.
The car’s approximate trade value was only around $5,000.
I needed reliable transportation for my family and my businesses, so this situation ultimately put me in the position of having to obtain another vehicle rather than immediately spending more repairing this Mercedes than its approximate trade value.
What makes this especially disappointing is that I was not some first-time customer.
I had trusted this business since I was 18 years old.
After years of doing business with them, instead of feeling like they were standing behind the situation, I felt like I was being blamed and pushed away. The owner even blocked me on Facebook while this dispute was going on.
Ally’s position is that the Amazon-supplied spark plug was defective and that customer-supplied parts carried no warranty.
There is a separate product claim involving Amazon, and an independent technician also raised concerns about the quality of those parts.
But there is still a very important question:
How did the independent shop end up documenting a CROSS-THREADED spark plug and MANGLED cylinder-head threads after Ally Auto Service performed the installation and later attempted the extraction?
That issue is now part of a lawsuit I filed against Hartin Investments LLC d/b/a Ally Auto Service.
I have documentation.
I have Ally Auto Service’s invoice.
I have their inspection report.
I have their written communications.
I have documentation of the failed extraction attempt.
I have photographs.
I have Westgate High Tech’s independent inspection.
And I have the $6,142.96 written repair estimate.
I’m sharing this because people searching for Ally Auto Service Omaha, Omaha auto repair, Omaha mechanics, Mercedes repair Omaha, or auto repair shops in Omaha deserve to see another customer’s documented experience before deciding where to take their vehicle.
I am not asking anyone to blindly believe me or attack this business.
Read what happened. Look at the documentation. And make your own decision about where you want to take your car.
Everything stated here reflects my personal experience, my opinions, and records available to me. Allegations regarding negligence, fault, causation, damages, or legal liability are disputed and have not yet been finally determined by a court.

OPPD Rates

We live in 2 bedroom apartment and just had a huge spike in our electric bill(~170, ~240) I just wanted to see if anyone else was having similar jumps or if I should call my apartment or OPPD. The ac (set to 73) is very clearly a pos and we’ve had to get maintenance on it 3 times already this summer. I guess my question is: Is this normal? Is there any real help I can get from OPPD? Should I put my foot down and request a replacement ac? Appreciate any help you can offer, thanks.
