Fit 235 spare in trunk?

I need to reshoe my 22 OBW. Heading from East coast to adventures out west.

I have oem Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015
225/65R17

But am considering getting 5 of the slightly larger Falken Wildpeak
235/65R17

Will these Falkens at 235 fit in my trunk well? Maybe with some deflation?

I use a 1x1 x 48” square tube as a crossbar to give support for my overlandish trunk setup. Looks like maybe 1/4 of slack to go larger than the geolandars.

Looks like the A/T3W aren’t available in 225.

Falkens seem great and I have a lot of highway to go before I get to the fun…my Yokos drone sometimes…how much louder are the Falkens?

Using Kayak Mounts by yourself.

I’m helping my wife look for crossbars and kayak mounts for her vehicle.

I know the crossbars are the first requirement, and I found a set on Amazon that appears to fit the car. From what I can tell, many of them are fairly universal, and I’ve installed crossbars on several vehicles before.

For the kayak mounts, I was leaning toward the J-style folding kayak carriers, basically the small folding cradle-style mounts that attach to each crossbar. My thought is that the kayak would sit in those mounts and then get properly strapped down. As long as the crossbars and kayak mounts are installed correctly, and the kayak is tied down properly, that seems like a safe setup.

She mentioned that some people use a suction-cup style assist device on the rear window, where you can rest the kayak on it and slide it up onto the crossbars. That sounds useful, especially if she is loading the kayak by herself.

I still think dedicated kayak mounts are probably the better route, especially if she is going out alone, but I’m curious what others are doing.

Does anyone here kayak by themselves using crossbars and proper kayak mounts? If so, how do you get the kayak onto the vehicle by yourself without too much trouble?

Any tips, tricks, or hardware recommendations would be appreciated. I’m especially interested in solo-loading methods that are safe and practical.

Finally, a First Campout!

After months of postponing due to work and family schedules, bad weather, more bad weather… I am finally able to take my OBW on her first camping trip, as well as my daughter’s first “real” camping trip beyond the backyard. Just went down to the local state park, nothing special, but just good to be out. Good stuff.

When it’s the journey that counts…

My last tank of gas cost $72. Which is absurd. So in my camping trip this weekend I decided to just drive the speed limit. Out in rural areas I’ve been driving 55-65. And this is the result. This is fully loaded for a three day solo car camping trip. I love my OBW.

New to me outback

I’m loving the color combo. I came from a 2008 lx570. I loved my LX but this suby is incredible and I couldn’t be happier. It’s my second Subaru and I’m happy to be back. I’m making some adjustments to my trailer in prep of camping season. Thanks everyone.

Summer’s Coming! 😎

Before & after….got the front 2 windows tinted with FormulaOne LLumar Stratos Series 30% to keep it legal & be able to see out at night. The back windows of my OBW were already so dark so now this looks better and will definitely feel better for summer road trips! 🌞

Part 2 - Subaru accepted my lemon law claim

For part 1, go to my last post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outback_Wilderness/s/LmN49lNc4O

Subaru accepted my claim and offered to reimburse me for my vehicle + downpayment/payments made so far (I’m financing). Some minot charge for usage fee - give or take -$1,400.

However, they said that I can also sign a settlement for $7,500 and keep the car under warranty and all. I just can’t claim lemon law if it happens again.

Honestly, the issue was super dumb and could’ve been fixed sooner had they been better with their logistics. It’s not one of those problems that the dealer/manufacturer can’t seem to pinpoint and fix. I know the car is fine now.

I love this car, and I might just go with the settlement. Can I negotiate up? Don’t want to have this get withdrawn.

UPDATE: Thank you to those that found my first post - i did not realize my profile was hidden. Lazy of me. My bad. I took the settlement and it had a cap at $7,500 by state law.

Subaru Outback Front Trail Cam Install | Gen 5 Head Unit Integration | Also Applies to Forester, Crosstrek!

Subaru Outback Front Trail Cam Install | Gen 5 Head Unit Integration | Also Applies to Forester, Crosstrek!

In this video, we perform a complete installation of a front-mounted trail camera integrated into an aftermarket head unit on a 2015 (Gen 5) Subaru Outback. This setup is ideal for off-road spotting and navigating tight trails. While we are working on an Outback, these trim removal and wire routing principles apply broadly to Forester and Crosstrek models of similar years.

What we cover:

✅ Gen 5 Dash Disassembly: Step-by-step removal of the dash trim pieces and the factory/aftermarket head unit to access the video inputs.

✅ Camera Mounting: Securing the trail cam to the front grille/bumper for the best field of view.

-----▶️ Cam can be found here: https://amzn.to/48Xjdf6

✅ Wire Routing: How to safely pass wiring through the firewall and center console without interfering with factory harnesses.

✅ Electrical Best Practices: Proper wire splicing and the use of heat-shrink tubing to ensure a weather-sealed, "Secure-By-Design" connection.

PARTS NEEDED:

✅ Camera:

-----▶️ Alternative Listing: https://amzn.to/4dGu67K

-----▶️ Adjustable Cam: https://amzn.to/3PDzTSj

-----▶️ License Plate Mount Version: https://amzn.to/4tBFYwG

Tools & Supplies Used:

✅ Zip ties for cable management

-----▶️ https://amzn.to/4d88nFx

✅ Specialty Zip Clips to put bumper or other exterior pieces back on

-----▶️ https://amzn.to/4uLaIfA

✅ Non-marring plastic trim removal tools (includes some clips)

-----▶️ https://amzn.to/4eKpa2F

✅ Adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing (3:1 Shrink)

-----▶️ https://amzn.to/4v5GtjR

✅ 10mm socket (for head unit bolts)

✅ Soldering iron or quality crimpers and torch

✅ Wire fish tape or a coat hanger (for firewall routing)

Technical Note for Subaru Owners:

When routing through the firewall, we used an existing rubber grommet. And we ensured our wiring is secured away from the steering column and pedal assembly. Since we are using a 12V trigger for the camera, we ensured it is fused appropriately for the camera's draw.

Disclaimer:

❎ Do NOT attempt. And if you do, remember that modifying your vehicle's electrical system requires care. Ensure the battery is disconnected when working on head unit wiring. Always verify your specific head unit's pinout before making permanent connections.

Finally, some new shoes

Ended up going with Falken Wildpeak A/T Trails in 235/65/17 because that was all the tire shop had in stock for that size. My Geolandars were at the end of their life and had a flat this weekend that wasn’t worth saving.

Other than having to spend more than I planned, I’m extremely happy with them so far. Very smooth ride and basically no noise.

Pre-collision braking sound

When you pre-collision braking activates, does it make any noise? I’m not talking about the beeping from the dashboard. When mine activates, there’s loud mechanical sounds that I guess are the actuators or electrical motor engaging the brakes. It’s pretty jarring.

I’ve had this car for years, but it’s my first car with this safety feature. I assumed it was normal and never thought to ask.

OEM HITCH Denver

Does anybody in the Denver area have experience with getting a OEM hitch install? I want/need a hitch and really want the OEM one but not sure what dealership or mechanic shop is reputable. Any recommendations would help and ty.

New '25 OBW owner

Just picked her up. Coming from a 2009 Forester XT Limited. Had Billstein shocks and Wildpeak Trails, basically had made my own Forester Wilderness.

Wanted newer and bigger, '25 OBW fit the bill. Absolutely love it so far, so nice to drive.

Test drove a lot of '23-25 XT, Touring, etc. Even a '26 XT Touring.

Stuck with this '25 Outback Wilderness beauty with 7500 mi. CPO ex-service loaner, 0.9% over 72 months, $37.5k. Special financing deal from Subaru corporate on ex-loaners, ends in June.

If you can find one...do it. They can't advertise ex-loaners, but if you spot a CPO with under 10k miles...it very well could be.

Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack Suggestions?

Finally circling back to pick up a hitch-mounted bike rack for my ‘25. Need to get four bikes on, and looking at a few different options. Most likely will go with a platform style to make it easier for the wife and kids. I have the OEM 2” hitch receiver installed.

Thought I’d reach out here to see if anyone here has run into any problems with fitment from any particular make or model of a rack. Any issues with wheel height or positioning relative to exhaust? Length of tongue or connection to the hitch receiver? Interaction with the back hatch? Wobbles or rattles?

EDIT: Thanks for all the responses! Seeing lots of love for Kuat and 1up, some Thule. Has anyone had any experience with Saris, positive or negative?

(Pardon the recycled cover pic - included for attention. Will provide a proper pic sometime after I’ve made the purchase.)

Just sharing

'24 Had a chance to let the horses loose and was actually surprised to see the Speed top out at only 114mph. But man the feeling was like flying, I have never owned a car that felt like floating going that fast.

Fastest for me was 140 in my '85 Trans Am, but you felt every bit of it. Same with my Mini Cooper.

Anyway just wanted to share.

question on battery .....

"22 OBW ..... bought used, currently has 63k on the clock. No real issues , but i was curious on when I should start considering a new battery. Typically im a drive it till it starts doing stupid stiff guy.... but it seems like the OBW just leaves you stranded out of no where when the battery starts to go ..... Current battery is factory OEM. I like to stay ahead of the ball game when I can, and I feel like I should probably start looking at replacing the battery ........

suggestions for a battery that wont break the bank are also appreciated.
