Columbia's iconic water tower is finally getting a glow-up

I've been complaining for years (to anyone who will listen) about the general griminess of our beloved downtown water tower. Well it look like it's about to get painted! There are two big painting trucks/machines and a mountain of tarps on site, plus other related equipment. I wonder if they are planning to decorate it in any way.

Weird substance dripping down inside of windshield

A couple days ago I noticed this unknown substance had dripped down the inside of the windshield, apparently from inside the headliner. It was a little sticky and didn't have any odor. The photos show it today after it had dried. It was somewhat difficult to scrub off. Any ideas what it could be?

COLMO bricks

We recently did some major honeysuckle clearance on our property, and I found an area where some previous owner (or their builder) had dumped a bunch of old bricks. Most of it was generic, but there were about 15-20 large bricks labeled COLMO. Might they be from one of our own brick factories? Edwards Brick and Tile Company (1927-1930), the Edwards-Conley Brick and Tile Company (1930-1946), or the Columbia Brick and Tile Company (1947-1986)?

BEEEES!

Y'all bee careful around S. Glenwood and Redbud.... There's a wild bee nest in a hollow tree that was recently cut down at this very busy crossroads. The bees have been angry for four days now! A beekeeper came on day 2 to try to get them into a box for relocation, but they seem reluctant to move.

This could be the same swarm of wild bees that were living in a different nearby hollow tree that fell in a storm a few months ago. If they are, I can assure you, they can and will sting you if you approach too close.

The Dalton Building

I don't know a lot about this building, but I did learn recently that it's the only (known) Mesker building in downtown Columbia.

>Mesker is a name of the family whose members operated several independent Midwestern businesses producing architectural iron products.... Meskers are found in historic downtown commercial centers, on Main Streets all across America. The marketing materials indicated that they were intended predominantly for commercial structures; indeed erecting a new storefront or modernizing an older one were considered musts for any shopkeeper looking to attract and retain a clientele. Opera houses, banks and hotels are but few commonly encountered uses of Mesker facades throughout the nation.

It looks like two buildings, but I think it's just one. KOPN and Formosa used to be located here.

There are more than 6,000 surviving known Mesker buildings, including nearly 500 in Missouri. If you ever visit Louisiana, MO, they have lots of Meskers there.

Who does this? 😡

Whoever dumps trash and garbage at the yard waste site is an awful person.

Don't be this awful person.
